Environmental Science
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
Welcome to Environmental Science Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM)
Module on Disciplines/ Branches Related to Environmental Science
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by
educators both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or
facilitator in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum
while overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also
aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them
to manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and
assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
1
For the learner:
Welcome to Environmental Science Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM)
Module on Disciplines/Branches related to Environmental Science.
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while being an active
learner.
This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:
What I Know
This part includes an activity that
aims to check what you already
know about the lesson to take. If
you get all the answers correct
(100%), you may decide to skip this
module.
What’s New
In this portion, the new lesson will
be introduced to you in various
ways such as a story, a song, a
poem, a problem opener, an activity
or a situation.
2
What is It This section provides a brief
discussion of the lesson. This aims
to help you discover and understand
new concepts and skills.

At the end of this module you will also find:
This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help
you master the nature of Environmental Science. The scope of this module permits
it to be used in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes
the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the
standard sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can be
changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.
4
The module is divided into two lessons, namely:
• Lesson 1 – Different Branches/Disciplines related to Environmental Science
• Lesson 2 – Professions related to Environmental Science

What’s In
To deepen our understanding on this lesson , let’s have first a knowledge
check on what you had learned from the previous lesson with an activity entitled “
A Fact or Bluff activity.
Say Fact if the statement is correct and Say Bluff if the statement is incorrect
and provide the correct word/s to make the statement correct. Are you now
READY? Let’s start!
1. The primary goal of environmental science is to protect and preserve
our natural resources.
2. It is important to study environmental Science because it allows us to
reflect how we manage our natural resources.
3. Biology is the study of the interaction between physical, chemical and
biological components of nature.
4. The word environment comes from the Greek word “environ” which
means surrounding or enveloping.
7
5. Environment is the surroundings or conditions in which a person,
animal or plant lives or operates. It is greatly affected by human activities.
What’s New
Break It Down!
Using the given graphic organizer, identify and unscramble the letters given
below the disciplines or branches related to environmental science and fill in the
missing part to complete the concept map showing the disciplines or branches
related to environmental science.
8
What is It
Environmental science is the study of all the components or factors that make
or influence our life-supporting biophysical environment, including earth processes,
ecological systems, biodiversity, natural resource, alternative energy systems,
climate change, various types of pollution, and so on. These entities or processes
are guided by complex interaction of physical, chemical, and biological processes,
as well as significant human intervention. Therefore environmental science
integrates information from a number of other disciplines and thus is
multidisciplinary in nature. Disciplines such as biology, chemistry, physics,
geology, geography, sociology, economics, management, and ethics have largely
been integrated to develop different subdivisions of environmental science. Its
major subdivisions include ecology, geosciences, environmental chemistry,
atmospheric science. Environmental microbiology, environmental toxicology,
environmental impact assessment and so on.
Besides these, there are certain subdivisions- environmental studies,
environmental engineering, environmental economics, environmental ethics,
environmental management, environmental sociology, environmental
biotechnology that are generally treated as independent academic disciplines
parallel to environmental science. Environmental conservation is the main emphasis
for most of these disciplines, but the approaches vary. For example, environmental
studies incorporate more of the social sciences for understanding human
relationships, perceptions, and policies towards the environment. Environmental
engineering on the other hand, focuses on the design and technology for improving
environmental quality.
