Quarter 1 – Module 3:

Basic Science Process

Skills
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
Welcome to Environmental Science Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on
BASIC SCIENCE PROCESS SKILLS

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators

both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping
the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their
personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their needs and
circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that will
help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage their
own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as
they do the tasks included in the module.

For the learner:

Welcome to Environmental Science Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on
BASIC SCIENCE PROCESS SKILLS

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities
for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to
process the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.
This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:
What I Need to Know This will give you an idea of the skills
or competencies you are expected to
learn in the module.

What I Know
This part includes an activity that aims
to check what you already know about
the lesson to take. If you get all the
answers correct (100%), you may
decide to skip this module.

What’s In This is a brief drill or review to help

you link the current lesson with the
previous one.

What’s New
In this portion, the new lesson will be
introduced to you in various ways such
as a story, a song, a poem, a problem
opener, an activity or a situation.

What is It This section provides a brief

discussion of the lesson. This aims to
help you discover and understand new
concepts and skills.

What’s More This comprises activities for

independent practice to solidify your
understanding and skills of the topic.
You may check the answers to the
exercises using the Answer Key at the
end of the module.

knowledge or skill into real life
situations or concerns.
Assessment This is a task which aims to evaluate
your level of mastery in achieving the
learning competency.

Additional Activities In this portion, another activity will be

given to you to enrich your knowledge
or skill of the lesson learned.

What I Need to Know
Every worker has set of tool to use for the job. A carpenter uses a saw and
hammer, a writer uses a printer and computer, a doctor uses a stethoscope, and a
clerk at the store uses a cash register. Scientist also have a set of tools called the
Science Process Skills. These are the tools every kind of scientist uses to investigate
the world around them. Whether the scientist is a biologist, astronomer, oceanographer,
zoologist, or chemist, they use the science process skills to construct science concepts,
discover new ideas, or to prove or disprove theories. Just like the tools for other
professions., these are the skills a scientist needs when they are experimenting, running
tests, viewing something under a microscope, or with other activities or duties performed
each day.

The Science Process Skills are not in any specific order, but the best scientist
uses them throughout an investigation or experiment. Just like a carpenter uses the right
tools to make furniture, a scientist wants to use the right skill to learn more about the
research or experiment. A scientist records the findings of every experiment, investigation,
and observation. Scientist keeps accurate records so their peers will be able to repeat the
research and investigations.

This module contains some activities that can help you enhance your basic science
processes. Remember that through these science processes, you can improve your
problem solving capability. The module is divided into two lessons, namely:
* Lesson 1 - Basic Science Process Skills
*Lesson 2 - Difference between observation and inference
After going through this module, you are expected to:
a. Identify the different science processes skills

b. Differentiate observation from inference

c. Perform activities applying science processes

OBSERVATION> using the five senses to gather information about objects such as
their characteristics, properties, similarities and differences.

https://www.google.com/search?q=SENSES

EXAMPLE: The creature has five eyes.

MEASUREMENT > comparing an unknown amount with a known unit to determine the
length, weight, temperature, quantity, or capacity of an object er even.
MEASUREMENT TOOLS

https://www.google.com/search?q=MEASUREMENT+TOOLS

EXAMPLE: Using a meterstick to measure the length of a table.

COMMUNICATION > using written or spoken words, graphs, tables, diagrams, models,
and video recordings to share information and ideas with others.
EXAMPLE: Describing the change in height of a plant over time in writing or through a
graph.
CLASSIFICATION >grouping or ordering objects or events into categories based on
similarities, differences and interrelationships.
EXAMPLE: Placing all rocks having certain grain size or hardness into one group.
INFERENCE >explaining, making interpretations or drawing conclusions about a
specific event based on observations and data.

10
EXAMPLE: Saying that the person who used a pencil made a lot mistakes the eraser
was well worn.
PREDICTION >forming an idea of an expected result not a guess but a belief of what
will occur based on present knowledge, observations, and inferences.
EXAMPLE: Predicting the height of a plant in two weeks time based on a graph of its
growth during the previous four weeks.

What’s More

Activity 1.1
When do you observe and when do you infer
Read the situation in the box, and then write your observations and inferences on the
table below.

You noticed a group of 3 boys and 3 girls talking, laughing and eating on a table.
One boy wears a coat and tie while the other 2 boys dress casually. One of the girls
wears a gown, while the other girls wear ordinary dresses. As they talk, the boy
with the coat and tie places his right arm over the shoulder of the girl wearing the
gown. The two other boys shake hands with the two other girls. Suddenly, one of
the girl cries, while the boys dressed ordinarily argue in high tones. The pair who
wore formal attire talks to the boys. Then they all walk away from each other in
pairs.

Objectives: To understand the unique features of every leaf by doing science process
skills to explain a plant by looking at its venation.
