GUIDE CARD

What I Need to Know?

Hi there! I am Mrs. David. Decades from now, will

we still have fresh air to breathe, clean water to
drink, and fertile soil from which we can harvest
crops? Will be enough energy resources to run
our industries? Will there be food resources to
feed us? We inhabit in two worlds. One is the
natural world of plants, animals, soil, air and wa-
ter that preceded us by billions of years and of
which we are a part. The other is the world of so-
cial institutions and artifacts that we create for
ourselves using science, technology, and politi-
cal organizations. Both worlds are essential to our
lives, that integrating them successfully causes enduring tensions.
Where earlier people had limited ability to alter their surroundings, we now
have power to extract and consume resources, produce wastes, and
modify our world in ways that threaten both our continued existence and
that of many organisms with which we share the planet. To ensure a sus-
tainable future for ourselves and future generations, we need to under-
stand something about how our world works, what we are doing to it, and
what we can do to protect and improve it.
Studying Environmental Science will help you understand how a process or
action has a corresponding effect which may beneficial or harmful. You
are not tasked to solve the problems at this point, but the lessons will en-
lighten you about the pressing issues on environment degradation. Learn-
ing about these is a good start in understanding and conserving our plan-
et.

Let’s do some review!

During your elementary level you study about Science. You had learned
that Science derived from knowing in Latin is a process for acquiring
knowledge. This system uses observation and experimentation to describe
and explain natural phenomena. The purpose is to produce useful models
of reality. We
can relate Science to Environment. Environment can be circumstances
and conditions that surround an organism the social and cultural condi-
tions that affect an individual or community. Since humans inhabit the
natural world as well as the built or technological, social, and cultural
world, all constitute important parts of our environment.

Activity 1
Directions: Write your answers on your notebook.
Read the song.
Masdan Mo Ang Kapaligiran

Dati'y kulay asul ngayo'y naging itim
Ang mga duming ating ikinalat sa hangin
Sa langit huwag na nating paabutin
Upang kung tayo'y pumanaw man, sariwang hangin
Sa langit natin matitikman
Mayron lang akong hinihiling
Sa aking pagpanaw sana ay tag-ulan
Gitara ko ay aking dadalhin
Upang sa ulap na lang tayo magkantahan
Ang mga batang ngayon lang isinilang
May hangin pa kayang matitikman?
May mga puno pa kaya silang aakyatin
Hindi na masama ang pag-unlad
Kung hindi nakakasira ng kalikasan
Bakit di natin pagisipanAng nangyayari sa ating kapaligiran
Darating ang…
Guide Questions:
Give at least three negative activities that can be found in the song that
can affect our environment.
What are the messages in the song?

Discussion of the Activity

This song makes us ponder on what is happening in our environment. We
may feel guilty because we are part of the people responsible for tearing
down the beauty of nature. The situation is getting worse every year and
we feel the changes during the times of natural calamities. We have to
act soon before we totally wreck Mother Nature. We have to conscien-
tiously do our part as caregivers and users of natural resources. In the end,
we won’t have anything good left for the next generation. They might
wonder if we did something to save the Earth for their benefit.

What You Need to Know

What do you think would happen if all of the trees in the rainforest were
cut down, or if chemicals were spilled in a river, or if snow and rain fall in-
creased drastically? These are some of the many topics that are studied
in the field of Environmental Science.
Environmental Science is the study of the environment, the process it un-
dergoes, and the problems that arise generally from the interaction of hu-
mans with the environment. The field of Environmental Science can be di-
vided into three main goals, which are to learn how the natural world
works, to understand how we as humans interact with the environment,
and also to determine how we affect the environment. The third goal of
determining how humans affect the environment also includes finding
ways to deal with these effects on the environment. Sciences used
in Environmental Science include Biology, Chemistry, Zoology, Physics,
Ecology, Oceanology, Geology, and Meteorology. Environmental Sci-
ence also branches out into environmental studies and environmental en-
gineering. It provides integrated and interdisciplinary approach to the
study of environmental problems. Environmental Science uses methods in
investigating problems that need to be solved and understood. How did
the scientists come up with answers to certain phenomena? It did not
take overnight. Scientists have a device called Scientific method. Scien-
tific method is a logical sequence of thought processes and activities de-
signed to gather information and test ideas. The process usually begins
and ends with observations about the real
world. There are five steps of Scientific Method.1. Define or State the
problem. 2. Formulate Hypothesis. 3. Collect data. 4. Test the hypothesis.
5. Formulate a Conclusion or Generalization. Environmentalism is some-
times described as “green politics”. It should be presented objectively
because it may pose unnecessary dangers particularly when people
carried away by their emotions. An environmentalist and environmental
scientist are both concerned about the environment, but there is a
clear distinction between them. Environmentalist is an individual who
promotes environmental awareness and advocates for the protection
of the environment. An environmental scientist is a specialist who stud-
ies, collects, and analyzes data pertaining to environmental conditions
or problems. Like any other scientist, an environmental scientist should
be objective in his / her search for knowledge and solutions to prob-
lems. A number of scientists connected with the Philippine Nuclear Re-
search Institute (PNRI) of the Department of Science and Technology
(DOST) study about the environment.

Activity 2 – Exploring Your Environment

Direction: Write your answers on your notebook.

Objective:

At the end of the activity, you should be able to observe the things
around you and take note of some problems which exist in your environ-
ment.
Procedure:

Find a place around you.

Record the environmental problems that exist there.
Write the probable causes of these problems in your notebook.
Data and Results
Place Problems exist in the Place Probable causes of the Problems
which Exist on the Place

2.

Discussion of the Activity

In exploring our environment we can see the things around us and the
changes which happen in our environment. It explores environmental
questions or issues and allows to jump right to activities that focus on real
-world issues. The problems in our environment are mostly caused by nat-
ural forces, unlike what we are experiencing these days.
Activity 3 – Population Growth
Direction: Write your answers on your notebook.
Objective:

At the end of the activity, you should be able to plot and analyze a graph
of Philippine population against time.
Materials:

●graphing paper ● ruler

●pencil ● population data

Procedure:

Use the given data to make a graph of population vs. time. Put population
on the y-axis and censal year (time) on the x-axis. Censal year refers to the
year when the census taken by the Philippine Census and Statistics.

Censal Year Population ( in millions)

1903 7.63
1918 10.31
1939 16.00
1948 19.23
1960 27.03
1970 36.68
1975 42.07
1980 48.09
1990 60.70
1995 68.61
2000 76.49
2005 85.50

Questions:

How do the population growth rates in the 1970’s and 2000’s compare?
If the growth rate in 2000’s remain unchanged, what will be the popula-
tion in the year 2010?
What concerns arise from an exponentially growing population

Discussion of the Activity

Environmentalists agree that the manner by which human population is
growing is a cause of concern. As it grows exponentially, the food sup-
ply may not be enough to sustain it. This exponential growth is so much
different from an arithmetic growth which shows a linear curve when
graphed.
