A. Content Standards adapt to climate change.

The learners should participate in activities that reduce risks and lessen the harmful effects of climate change.
B. Performance Standards

Rationale:

Prior Knowledge:
Explain how different factors affect the climate of an area.

C. Learning Competencies / (S9ES-IIIe- 30)

IV. PROCEDURES
A. Reviewing previous ELICIT
lesson.  Hip hip-Hurray – The teacher will say a particular topic which was previously discussed. This topic is the
or presenting the new basis for the statement to be asked later. The students will participate the game and those students who
lesson failed in the game will be the one to answer the given question of the teacher.
 Questions regarding volcanoes

1. Give me one type of volcanic eruption?

2. Give me another type of volcanic eruption?
3. Give me another type of volcanic eruption?
4. What do you call the energy that comes from the heat of the Earth’s interior?
5. How does volcanic eruption affect society?
6. Is the steam of a powerplant contribute to climate change?

I will expand the last answer of the student and connect to the previous discussion.
B. Establishing a purpose ENGAGE
for the lesson
 Discuss the different between climate and weather.

Weather – affects day-to-day activities.

Climate – Is general pattern of weather in a certain area over a long period of time.

 Present a picture of a globe or a map:

C. Presenting examples/
instances of the new
lesson

1. Who can identify the latitude region?

2. Who can identify the longitude region?
3. Locate the tropical region.
4. Locate the temperate region.
5. Locate the polar region.
Ask: Why does earth have different climate zones?

Our lesson for today is about the role of latitude in varying the climate of different places.

 Unlocking of terms:
Climate – Is the long-term weather pattern in a region, practically averaged over 30 years.
Latitude and longitudes – latitudes are horizontal lines that measure distance north or south of the equator.
A And longitudes are vertical lines that measure east or west of the meridian in Greenwich, England
Equator – an equator is an imaginary line around the middle of a planet or other celestial body.
North pole & South pole – the North Pole is the Northernmost point on Earth. And the South Pole is on the
opposite end of Earth.

D. Discussing new concepts EXPLORE

and practicing new skills #1 Activity 3: When the Sun’s Rays Strike
Objectives: explain how latitude affects climate.
E. Discussing new concepts
and practicing new skills #2
Procedure:

 First, students should group themselves 5 members per group and then select a leader.
 Leaders must write down all the members in a ¼ sheet of paper.
 Each group will conduct a group understanding and listen carefully to the videos I will be presented.
 Each group will prepare ½ length twice to answer the following question:
1. How much is the tilt of Earth’s axis?
2. Which part of the earth receives most of the sun’s rays?
3. Why does the amount of heat received by the places far from the equator become less?
4. Why are the coldest places on Earth found near the poles?
5. Why are the places with high temperature found at the equator?
6. How does latitude affect climate?

Allotted time: 5 mins.

A video will be presented:

After 5 minutes I will pick one of the members in every group. And then explain their answer in front of their
classmates. Plus 10 points for the participation.

F. Developing Mastery EXPLAIN

Answer of the activity:
(Leads to Formative Assessment 3)

Q1. 23.5 angle

Q2. Equator

Q3. It is due to the tilting of the earth’s axis and the shape of the earth.

Q4. They receive less amount of heat.

Q5. Due to the tilting of the earth’s axis, places near the equator receive more heat making the air temperature higher.

Q6. When the area is farther from the equator, the air temperature is lower resulting in a cold climate. When the place
is closer to the equator, the air temperature is higher which results in a warm climate.

The teacher will further discuss the concepts.

 Do you think that the latitude influences the climate?

 Which part on earth has receives much of the radiant energy released by the sun?
 And what happen to the places near in in the equator? Is it cold? Or warm?
 What about those places that is away from the equator? Is it cold? Or warm?

Key Concepts
 You have notice that most of the sun’s rays strike vertically in places near the equator. This makes the
temperature higher in these areas, resulting in warm climate. Places that are not always vertically hit by the
sun’s rays experience cold climate. As the latitude increases, the smaller the angle of the sun’s rays strike
the surface. Therefore, when the area is farther from the equator, the air temperature is lower. When the
place is closer to the equator, the air temperature is higher.
