Environmental Science
Quarter 2 – Module 3
The Ecological Levels of Organization
Objectives:

1. Identify the Levels of Organization in the Environment.

2. Explain the relation of each level of Organization to one another
3. Illustrate the Ecological Levels of Organization.

PRETEST

Arrange it! - DIRECTIONS: Using the diagram below, arrange the following ecological
levels from the LOWEST to HIGHEST form of organization.
Biome Biosphere Organism
Population Community Ecosystem

KEY CONCEPTS:

• Biological systems represent a hierarchy of progressively increasing level of

complexity and the Ecosystem represent a high complex level of organization.
• There are six (6) levels of Ecological Organization.
• They interact with each other to provide the needs of one another and to maintain
harmony in the ecosystem as a whole.
INTRODUCTION

How is your city organized? It should probably organized at several levels. Individual
citizen are living in a single house. Those house are part of a street. These streets are
part of a purok. And the puroks are part of the barangay. Lastly, barangays are part of
the city. Just like city are organized, the ecosystems are also organized in several different
levels, and an ecosystem can be studied at any one of the various level of organization
to know their relationship and interaction with one another.

In this module, we will discover the Ecological Levels of Organization using different kinds
of activity.

ACTIVITY #1

ENGAGE
On our previous lesson, we have discussed what are the BIOTIC and ABIOTIC factors in
the environment. Now, we will review what you have learned about it.

You task on this activity is to give five (5) examples of BIOTIC and ABIOTIC factors in
the environment using cutouts from old magazines that you have. Make sure you paste it
on the space provide below. Have fun!

BIOTIC ABIOTIC

Processing Question:

How can Biotic and Abiotic factor of the environment interact with each other? Cite an example.

2. Name the four (4) things that a habitat provided to an organism.

ACTIVITY #3

Below is a diagram of the Ecological Levels of Organization and their respective role in
the environment. Your task in this activity is to answer what level organization is being
describe in the statement. Write your answer within the circle and illustrate/draw an
example for each level on the space provided. Be creative!

Reading Comprehension

Habitat is a set of the place of environmental conditions in which particular organism lives
and adapt the situation accordingly. It provides food, shelter, water and a place to
reproduce. A niche is nothing but an idea or role played by organisms that how they can
live in an environment including their diet, shelter, etc. Mainly niche is concerned with the
factor of gaining energy by organisms and supplying it to other, in the ecosystem.

A habitat defines the interaction of

organisms with the other factors, which
can be living or non-living, while niche
describes how that specific organism is
linked with its physical and biological
environment.

Habitat is the part of the ecosystem,

while niche plays an important role in
the formation of an ecosystem. Both the
words describe the living habits of the
organisms of all kinds of species, how

they eat, their shelter, etc. Each

organism plays their particular role in its
ecosystem and also have their own defined niche in the ecosystem.

Levels of Organization

Ecosystems can be studied at small levels or at large levels. The levels of organization
are described below from the smallest to the largest:

• An organism is an individual living thing.

• A population is a group of organisms belonging to the same species (a group of
individuals that are genetically related and can breed to produce fertile young) that
live in the same area and interact with one another.
• A community is all of the populations of different species that live in the same
area and interact with one another. A community is composed of all of the biotic
factors of an area.
• An ecosystem includes the living organisms (biotic) in an area and the non-living
aspects of the environment (abiotic).
• A biome is a group of ecosystems with the same climate and dominant biotic
communities found in different location throughout the biosphere.
• The biosphere includes are the biotic organisms on Earth and the ecosystems
they inhabit, including the oceans and the atmosphere.
