A Reflection of More Than Just Words

Communication is often used in what we know best as speaking and simply getting our point

across with the very words we use. On a piece of paper, it represents a greater form of

understanding. The selective words we write, and how we write them can cause a reader to either

be more educated or confused questioning the writing they just encountered. From similes,

metaphors, and rhetorical devices, as a writer, you hold the responsibility of communicating

what is needed to be communicated in how you present the information. Over the course of this

semester, I have understood this throughout the essays assigned to me. Within my own writing, I

have seen a world of improvement, from grammar to interpretation of my personal thoughts and

ideas.

Grammar conventions are a structure of writing that I have seen an abounding amount of

improvement within my work. The slightest fault in punctuation and grammar can cause a

misinterpretation of material for the reader. As a writer, I struggled with having so much to say

but with little understanding of how to say it properly. Starting this semester in some cases I

wrote exactly how I thought, very broad and to the point. This gave no space for the reader to

fully comprehend what is being said in my writing. In my progression 1 essay, I noticed the great

trouble I had with constant sentence fragments and sentence structure. I knew just how to start

what I wanted to say but with no knowledge of how to end it. Enhancing my sentence structure, I

noticed a huge change inaccurately in developing a sentence without making it too wordy or too

inclusive. As far as punctuation goes, the constant displacement of commas haunted me. With no

recollection, I put commas on parts of sentences where they weren't needed and lacked them in

areas where they were necessary.

As writers, precisely sharing where we got our information from is more than important

because it gives credit to the authors that have full ownership of what we wrote. Throughout this

semester in many ways I've allowed this to go over my head, and didn't give it much attention.

Even with the passages we read in class, it is vital to cite and allow the reader to know whose

words you're specifically writing down. Additionally, in my immediate writing, my words

quickly became repetitive. In transition words and word choice, I found myself saying the same

thing several times. For the reader, this quickly develops a sense of disinterest in the passage. As

the reporter of information, your job is to keep the viewer engaged and make them want to read

the next sentence. So on and so forth.

Lastly, introductions are by far the most important part of essay writing. It is responsible for

grabbing the reader's attention overall. It is the very portion where you establish the topic and the

main idea of the essay. It must flow, for that reason, I constantly incorporated quotes to connect

to the thesis and main topic. As I look back on my previous work, though I did make these

connections and allowed my words to flow I constantly found myself making my entire

introduction specifically about what I incorporated and less about what the actual essay was

meant to cover. As I wrote more and with the correction of others, I found the balance that I

needed to input within my introductions.

In conclusion, writing is a source that has been the backbone of laws, declarations, and

historical passages (The Importance of Literature in Modern Society 3). Writing is what has

always been needed to get imperative points across to the public. The choices of how you use

your words and form your thoughts can misinform a reader or highly educate them. I have seen a

great advancement in my writing, and in specific writing criteria like grammar, spelling,

transition words, and my overall presentations throughout this semester. As I take with me these

needed writing adjustments I have noticed and corrected, my writing will only get better.
