Assignment # 3
Course Title: Statistical Inference
PRACTIAL # (3a)
The Food and Nutritional Board of the National Academy of Sciences states that the RDA of Iron for adult females under the age
of 51 is 18 mg. The following iron intakes, in milligrams, during a 24 – Hour periods were obtained for 50 randomly selected
adults females under the age of 51.
15.0 18.1 14.4 14.6 10.9 18.1 18.2 18.3 15.0 16.0
12.6 16.6 20.7 19.8 11.6 12.8 15.6 11.0 15.3 9.4

6.3 16.8 12.5 16.3 14.7 12.7 16.3 11.5 10.5 12.0
State the assumption for this test,
(i) Write the mean and Varianvce of the adult females under the age of 51.
(ii) Calculate a 90% confidence interval for the for adult females under the age of 51.
iii) At the 1% level of significance, do the data suggest that adult females under the age of 51 are, on the average,
getting less than the EDA of 18 mg of iron?

A paint manufacturer claims that that the average drying time for its new paint is 2 hours. To test that claim the drying times
are obtained for 25 randomly selected cans of paints. Here are the drying time, in minutes.

The U.S Energy Information Administration 5 publishes data on residential consumption
and expenditures in Residential Energy Consumption Survey: Consumptions and Expenditures. Suppose you want to decide
whether last year’s mean annual fuel expenditure for households using natural gas is different from that of for households
using only electricity. At the 5% significance level, what conclusion would you draw given the data, in dollars, shown in the
following table?

State two assumptions for this test,
(i) Write the mean and Standard deviation for the annual expenditures of Natural gas and Electircity.
(ii) Calculate a 90% confidence interval for mean difference annual fuel expenditures.
(iii) At the 5% significance level, what conclusion would you draw for mean annual fuel expenditure for households
using natural gas is different from that of for households using only electricity.
PRACTICAL # (3d)

Two types of instruments for measuring the amount of sulfur monoxide in the atmosphere are
compared in an air-pollution experiment. It is desired to determine whether the two types of instrument
yield the equal mean measurement. The following readings were recorded for the two instruments:
Sulfur Monoxide
Instrument A 0.96 0.82 0.75 0.61 0.89 0.64 0.81 0.68 0.65
Instrument B 0.87 0.74 0.63 0.55 0.75 0.70 0.69 0.57 0.53

Assuming the populations of measurements to be approximately normally distributed with equal

variances, test the hypothesis that mean measurement of sulfur Monoxide obtained by two instruments
are equal. Using α= 0.01
PRACTICAL # (3e)
Using the data of Practical # (3c), can we conclude that the proportion of the householdshaving the fuel
expenditure more than $1300 using Natural Gas is higher than the proportion of the households using
Electricity only? Use α= 0.05
PRACTICAL # (3f)
Using the data of Practical # (3b), can we conclude that the standard deviation of the drying time is
higher than 10 minutes? Use α= 0.01
PRACTICAL # (3g)
Arandom sample of 400 college students are classified according to class status and news paper reading
habit
Freshman Sophomor Junior Senior
e
Daily 29 41 33 28
Occasionally 32 29 36 39
Not reading 55 34 27 17

Test the hypothesis that the class status and news paper reading habit are independent. Use a 0.01 level
of significance.
