    The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) is located in the western part of Mindanao and was created in 1989 to include the provinces of Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi. In 2001, ARMM expanded to include the province of Basilan, except Isabela City, and the city of Marawi. ARMM has a population of 3.78 million based on the 2015 census and is made up of 5 provinces, 2 cities, 116 municipalities, and 4,490 barangays. Over 50% of the ARMM population lives below the poverty line.
