Exercise 1: Poster Making
a. What is the invention?
The inventions found in the poster are some of the inventions made by
Filipinos. One invention is the PC chipset which was invented by Engr. Dado Banatao,
who introduced the first single-chip graphical user interface accelerator that made
computers work a lot faster and for helping develop the Ethernet controller chip that
made the Internet possible. This invention has allowed computer users to use graphics
for commands and not the usual typed commands in older computers. It has allowed
data processing to be a little faster using very little space (small chips instead of large
boards).

b. What are the precursors of your invention? What tools existed prior to it or how did
people carry out activities before its invention?
Banatao’s principle was to simplify computer design with fewer chips as
possible. Before his innovations, computers needed at least 150 chips to function.
Thanks to him, computers can now run on a single chip. These inventions or better
yet, technological breakthroughs, helped define the personal computer which today
has become an indispensable tool for work, school and communications.

c. What were the social, political, cultural, or economic contexts in which the invention
was made?
Since their appearance, these chips have transformed much of human society.
They are now mainly found in computers, satellites for communications, televisions,
and so much more. Without these, such familiar devices as the personal computer,
cell phone, and calculator would not exist. As chip complexity increases and cost
decreases thanks to improvements in manufacturing techniques, new applications for
chips are constantly being found. Technological changes are regularly aggravating
with social, political, and financial changes that can be useful or negative to people
and to society. Technology permits you to have clear impact over what the
community’s state is.

d. What were the social, political, cultural, or economic impacts of your chosen
invention?

All aspects of our lives today are influenced by technology. The impact of this
invention on our lives is substantial. This invention has changed the way people used
different kinds of technology especially computers. Today, technological innovation
has further reduced that to a single chip. His inventions which is now used by every
computer in the world market, helped revolutionize the way we see and use computers
today. Inventing this chipset devises a more efficient way to link computers, by
simplifying the computer design with fewer chips which has made computers smaller,
more portable and more affordable. This helped Filipinos to be known in the world of
technology and these devices and many more help us build ties, work anywhere, and
access information in just a few clicks.
