Question 1: Design the solid slab shown in figure below using ACI direct design method. All columns are 450 mm
X 450 mm. All beams are 450 mm wide and 550 mm deep. qu=20 kN/m2 (including own weight). f’c=28 MPa and
fy=420 MPa. Use 300 mm slab thickness.

a. Check if provided slab thickness satisfy the minimum thickness requirement of the code
b. Design the slab in the long direction (x-direction).
c. Check the slab for one-way shear

Question2: Consider the concrete building frame shown. The relative lateral deflection for the
third storey under total wind shear Vwind= 300 kN is 25mm. The load combination: U = 1.2 D
+1.6 W + 1 L + 0.5 ( Lr or S or R) controls. All columns cross sections are 450 mm x 450 mm.
All beams cross sections are rectangular 250 mm x 450 mm. The column is subjected to double
curvature under dead load and single curvature under live load. Column 3 is to be designed using
fc= 28 MPa, fy=420MPa. Consider the floor thickness is 450 mm.

Question3: A cantilever beam is subjected to uniformly distributed dead load of 10 kN/m (and concentrated live
load of 20 kN ). Of the total live load, 25% is considered sustained for 2 year. The beam has a rectangular cross-
section of 400 mm width and 700 mm depth. The beam will support nonstructural partitions that are likely to be
damaged by large deflection. Check if deflection of this beam satisfies ACI 318-11 limitation. f’c=28 MPa and
fy=420 MPa.
