Performance Task No. 2: Home Experiment on Fermentation

Introduction:

WHAT IS RESPIRATION?

Respiration is a chemical reaction which occurs in animal and plant cells. It releases energy from glucose.
Aerobic respiration needs oxygen, but anaerobic respiration doesn’t need oxygen. Anaerobic respiration
produces less energy than aerobic respiration. It occurs in humans when not enough oxygen is reaching
muscle cells (for example during hard exercise). Bacteria and other microorganisms can also use
anaerobic respiration and yeast carry out an anaerobic process called fermentation.

Objective: To observe fermentation using yeast.

Observations:

Record your observations here, from the start of the experiment until it is done. Take note that the
more specific and detailed the observations are, the better.

Activity I. Fill in the table below with the data observed from the start of the experiment until it is
done.

Data Observation Table

Activity II. Graph your data using different colors or symbols for each one. Include a legend to
differentiate between the sets of data.

III. Photo documentation of your Experiment:

You must be able to document the activity by taking 10 photos of you showing proof that you really
performed this experiment. Lay out the images accordingly in one page.
