able to concentrate, so is h e able to m anifest m ental
pow er. A m an ’s pow er of m en tal concentration is
to a g reat ex ten t his m easure of greatness.
M ental C oncentration, in practice, consists in
focusing th e m ind upon a given subject, o r object,
firm ly a n d fixedly, and then holding i t th e re for a
certain tim e, fully in te n t u p o n its object, and n o t al

T h e M ental C oncentration of the occultists is a
v ery different thing, and is solely in control of the
will, being applied w hen desirable, and tak en off or
inhibited w hen desirable.
T h e train e d occultist w ill concentrate upon a sub

know n to th e ancients centuries before M esm er’s

it.
M esm er ta u g h t th a t the pow er w as based upon
th e presence of a stran g e universal fluid w hich per

upon th e nerves and brains of people. H e and his

su b jects in to a sound sleep before they could be
influenced. B u t b o th o f these ideas have given

very deplorable results, arising from a conscious or

readily led into temptation and to yield to the de

for immoral purposes is a terrible crime and brings
