song, viewing video

Key Vocabulary: contractions, long form, shortened

Materials: charts, band aid, index cards

Procedures: Introduction:

Students will be engaged in game called “Contraction Hunt”. Different

contractions and their long forms will be written on cards. Students will
take a card and will find their partners with matching contractions.
Students will then sing a “Contraction Action” song.

Step 1:

Recap previous lesson:

Teacher will communicate to students the lesson objectives. Students will

be asked to give their understanding of the word contraction. A chart with
the definition of contraction will be displayed just in case students are
unable to give a suitable definition.

Step 2:

Teacher will guide students in forming other contractions using will, is.
Example. I’ll, she’s. Students will be instructed to pay keen attention to
the letters that are removed in each case.

Step 3:

Selected students will be asked to read the given contractions (in step 2)
and use them in sentences.

Step 4:

Students will be placed in groups and given index cards with the long
form of words for which they will perform “Contraction Operation”. They
will be told that, they are surgeons going to operate on words. Students
will then be instructed to cut the words in the correct place and use band
aid to connect it. The band aid will represent the ‘apostrophe’. Students
will then read each contraction word and stick them on an interactive chart
to match the long form of words. Eg He is – he’s
Step 5:

To recap the lesson a video will be showed to students. The video

contains majority of contraction words that were used in the lesson. Link
