Part A: China’s 34 Industries Performance Analysis
I. Introductory Review of Input-Output Table
Input-output-analysis technique was developed from economic data observation by Wassily
Leontief (Ronald & Peter n.d). This model is widely adopted in economics, with its primary
purpose is to analyze the interdependence between industries, which means outputs of one serve
as inputs for others (Heinz & Christian 2000). For instance, one industry purchases raw materials
or fuels (input) from other industries for their manufacturing purposes while adding labor and
capital to produce goods or services. Moreover, they sell these goods or services (output) to other
industries as raw materials for production, supplying final demand sectors including government,
business and households. Input-output tables (IOTs) record these transactions in rows and
columns pertaining to detailed product and industry classifications, exhibiting production and
consumption interdependencies on domestic and international scale (Paul 2013).

Regarding economic perspective, these IOTs’ recorded transactions illustrate the demand-supply
relationship of economic equilibrium. This shows final demands for goods and services with
compulsory inter-industry transactions to fulfil that demand which assists policymakers to
evaluate stages of economic growth for determining strategies (William 2020). For instance,
when automobile producer increases the number of cars they produce, firms will need more
workers to increase production thus, increase employment while also need to purchase more steel
or other related goods used manufacturing process. Since manufacturers increase their inputs
purchase, those inputs-producer including steel manufacturers need more workers and purchase
more of their inputs to satisfy the car manufacturer’s demand. This example indicates that IOTs
can analyze the influences and connections between sectors and economic projections (GDP)
while being a basis for planning and macroeconomic investigation (Ridwan, Ofya & Sony 2015).
Since GDP captures all final goods and services made within an economy, GDP growth rate is an
accurate indicator reflecting economic growth (Tim 2020). With various flows of commodities
and services involved in different industries, IOTs illustrate the final uses of goods and services
which are the basis for GDP growth rate’s calculation.

3
Pertaining to sustainable development of one economy, analyzing relationships between socio-
economic activities and the environment is critical for sustainable development planning at all
levels (Vito & Silvana 2004). IOTs can be used to track supply chain’s activities in terms off
assessing the link between economic development and its environmental consequences (United
Nation 2018). These environmentally-extended IOTs comprise all sectors in one economy with
additional flows of locally extracted materials, publicly water usage and emissions. With the
assistance of multicriteria decision aid tools to determine the most sustainable sector, the
government can facilitate economic progression while generating minimal environmental
impacts (Lenzen 2003).

However, IOTs has limitation regarding its inaccuracy of linear input coefficient (Smriti n.d).
Since its framework relies on recorded data and constancy assumption, the model eliminates
possibilities of unexpected economic events such as COVID 19 or market crash 2008 (United
Nation 2018). For instance, gasoline price might undesirably rise. As industries are connected,
those using gasoline input will fail to respond to the sudden shift, resulting in unrealistic
expectations for involved industries. Regardless, most identities notice the shortcoming of this
tool, thus only utilizing it as a suggestive foundation for overall economic performance.

II. Input-Output Table Analysis

a. Estimation of the technology matrix of the 34-industry from 2015 to 2017

Technology matrix is deviated from dividing the relative Input-Output Table cell to their relative
Total Output of the referred column industry.

The figures in the Agriculture (c1) row saw decline in many manufacturing industries: Food (c3);
Textiles (c4); Leather (c5); Wood (c6); Pulp, Paper (c7); Chemicals (c9); Rubber and Plastics
(c10) from 2015 to 2017 (Table 1,2). This indicates that these industries rely less on
Agricultures inputs while being more dependable on their own resources with growing figures
(Appendix 1). As the figures of own-resources consumption decreased, Agriculture saw itself
being more relied on other industries.

Other community services (c34) column saw decline in many industries in 2016, thus proving
that it consumed less resources from others.

6
c. Profit and Profit Margin Analysis of China’s 34-industries.

Profit is the difference between the Total Output to Total Input.

Industry c1 always had the highest profit figures implying that the industry had earned the most
for the economy. In contrast, Sale motorcycles(c19) consistently ranked last.

7
Additionally, from 2015 to 2016, Construction (c6), c4; Public administration (c31), Other
community service(c34), Health (c33) saw a rise in ranking.

Profit Margin is calculated by dividing Profit by Total Output.

In contrast to Profit rankings, c19, which ranked last previously, had the highest profit margin,
meaning it can generate the most out of $1 of output. Next, services-industries, Real estate (c29),

8
Financial Intermediation (c28), were occupied the top ranking unlike in Profit where it is the
division between Agriculture and Manufacture industries. Industry c1, while was the highest
profit generator, only ranked 7th. However, the top ranking industries are less utilizing their
output as input for other industries, resulting in much higher figures. Indeed, the last rankings are
Coke (c8), c5, Metals (c12), whose outputs are primarily consumed in other manufacturing and
transport industries, resulting in the lowest figures while had better performance in Profit and
output. Therefore, though excluding the scale of industries in measuring profitability, Profit
Margin hardly represents industry's performance.

Regarding the changes in 3 years, Paper (c7), Wood (c6)-manufacturing industry and Industry
c34, a service industry saw improvement in profitability with rising rank.

d. Discussion of Findings

Overall, China experienced economic development as both total production, expenditure and
Profit increased.

To evaluate each industry performances, profit growth from 2015 to 2017 of 34-industry is
computed.

9
The top-5-fastest-growth in Profit were service industríes, among which is c34, who driven the
most profit growth. This is reflected above where the industry outranked in profit and profit
margin performance (part c). Next, manufacturing industries are also a contributor because their
growth outpaced the economy, as shown in their ranks mainly in upper-middle. This is further
strengthened when manufacturing also ranked relatively high on Profit (part c) while developing
more dependence on its own resources (part b).

The last rank was shockingly C1, whose Profit was the highest (part c). It is important to point
out that both c1's input and output was decreased in 3 years, but as input decline more than
output, Profit still maintained (Appendix 2). The reduction in its input consumption from
manufacturing industries (part b) might imply the decreasing demand for agriculture, hence,
dragging down the total production.

While agriculture has the highest profit accounts in China economy, manufacturing industries
and some services industries had better-performance, which spurred economy’s development.
This might be because China is shifting from agriculture-base to industrialization. Consequently,
China can be concluded as an industrial country.

III. Effects of Economic Shock and Economic Policies
a. Estimation of New Output to satisfy New External Demand in 2016 & 2017
The total output of each industry to satisfy the external demands is calculated based on the

Leontief Input-Output Analysis equation

11
b. New Input-Output Table for 2016 & 2017

The new I-O table will be deduced by multiplying each industry’s newly calculated total output

by its technology matrix’s cell associated-industry-column. We then have:

c. Impacts of global economic shock and economic stimulation policies to the changes of
input-output and total profit(loss)

In this part, we will analyze the impact by comparing the changes input-output and total profit in
original 2015 – 2016 to the changes in 2015 – 2016 after the economic shock. Likewise, the
same method will be used when evaluating the impact of economic policies from 2016 – 2017.

Overall, Global economic shock in 2016 leads to a downward trend in the changes of input-
output and total profit of the industries.

IV. Conclusion
In conclusion, this report provided detailed analysis of China’s inter-industry dependencies and
effects of economic crisis on the national output.

Regarding part 1, Input-Output Table (IOT)’s function is demonstrated. Specifically, IOT is used
for interdependence between industries analysis, indicating one industry's outputs are important
inputs for others. IOT presents the impacts and relationships between sectors and economic
projections through its revelation of the demand and supply of economic-equilibrium. Also, IOT
is effective in monitoring supply chain’s involved activities, thereby supporting investigation of
economy environmental impacts to ensure sustainable development.

In part 2, after evaluating the total profit value and profit margin of 34-industry, it is conclusive
that the fastest profit growth belongs to Other community service (c34). However, it should be
noted that this industry is less reliant on domestic resources as its input coefficient decreased in
many industries. Additionally, Manufacturing Industries witnessed considerable growth.
Meanwhile, the lowest is Agriculture (c1) despite the highest profit. This industry suffered from
less consumption of its input, thus lead to production decrease. Indeed, China has transformed
from an agricultural dominant economy to an industry giant. For agriculture industry, China is
recommended to invest in advanced technology to promote higher labor productivity, and in
overall management to ensure the size of the high-skilled labor force. Labors and technology are
two key factors in the agriculture industry, which can better production performance. Also,
China should turn their focus more on the service sectors because of its potential global growth
by implementing more effective policies related to the industry (CFI n.d.) (Appendix 6).

Part 3 shows that Economic shocks created a downward trend in total input, output and profit
while effective economic policies drove up China's performance. This indicated that changes in
External Demands always affects industries to certain degrees. Other services industry (c34) is
the most vulnerable during the shock whereas Wood industry (c6) benefits most from stimulation
policies. Firms within the Other service (c34), which is most vulnerable by external demand, it’s
recommended to have detailed risk management procedures and review them frequently as it can
gauge the weights of external risks, thus preparing to react in times of downturn. Government is
suggested implementing the financial support for most firms. Firstly, it will support employment
retention and maintenance of industrial connections (Haraguchi 2020). Moreover, this policy

17
eases the financial burden and maintains liquidity for firms even in the normal state to supports
them well-operates their business and face fewer challenges even in the economic shock.
Additionally, government can also aid this service industry by cutting its dependence on external
force with the expansion of domestic market (Appendix 7).

Part B: Matrix Encryption
I. Design an Encryption process

Assigned A as 1, B as 2, C as 3 and continued.

Given the encoding matrix of positive integers:

Message 1. ATTACK DELAWARE ON WEDNESDAY

We multiply matrix M with matrix A to encoded the responding message.

Therefore, the encoded message in rows is:

66, 235, 168, 197, 145, 37, 120, 73, 125, 48, 89, 274, 145, 210, 75, 67, 182, 140, 174, 123, 56,
183, 106, 199, 107, 31, 171, 96, 189, 131.

19
This resulted in message 1: ATTACK DELAWARE ON WEDNESDAY

Message 2. ATTACK NEWYORK NEXT SATURDAY

We multiply matrix M by matrix B to encode the responding message.

Therefore, the encoded message in rows is:

66, 235, 168, 197, 145, 58, 191, 114, 217, 109, 95, 371, 240, 319, 156, 88, 385, 173, 380, 164,
101, 387, 180, 403, 160, 31, 171, 96, 189, 131.

This resulted in message 2: ATTACK NEWYORK NEXT SATURDAY

20
Message 3. ATTACK NEWYORK NEXT THURSDAY

Therefore, the encoded message in rows is:

66, 235, 168, 197, 145, 58, 191, 114, 217, 109, 95, 371, 240, 319, 156, 88, 385, 173, 380, 164,
112, 409, 220, 405, 178, 31, 171, 96, 189, 131.

This resulted in message 3: ATTACK NEWYORK NEXT THURSDAY

II. Reflection

The process of encoding messages provides us fundamental reflection of matrix applied

cryptography. By assigning the letters to numbers freely, which our group began at 1, we can add
confusion in the original message to avoid hackers. Additionally, the larger size encoding matrix
of 5x5 and the messages also provides more possibilities compared to 2x2 matrix. Afterwards,

21
the coded messages were unrecognizable and cannot be assigned into meaningful letters using
the pre-coding allocation.

But, because only depended on encoding matrix (keys) and matrix multiplication, messages
exposure might still happen. With computer development, thousands keys can be tried out in
seconds, making this method vulnerable to online hackers (Pugliano & Sehestedt 2017).
However, matrix encryption was the basis for later encryptions like Advanced Encryption
Methods (AES) (Upadhyay 2021). High-degree matrix multiplication in combination of
diffusion methods such as SubstituteBytes Transformation, ShiftRows-Transformation and large
key size allow AES –256 to be impossible to break using current computer power (Guy-Cedric
& Suchithra 2018). For that, AES is a notable example of integrating matrix in online data
management for Google or Facebook, where users’-information-exposure remains a pressing
concern. In application, whenever senders and recipients communicate, they share a unique key
to decipher messages, which is even inaccessible by the main serve (Google Cloud 2020).
Furthermore, another key is used to encrypt the key to the protected data, creating double-layer
protection, which ensures online data leakage's risk is at the lowest.

Table 26. Calculations of New External Demand after the effect of Economic Stimulation Policies in 2017

(Refer to Excel Question 3ab 2017).

Appendix 6:

Over the past century, it is true that the service sectors have notably expanded over the world,
taking up to 70% of total OECD value added in 2000 (CFI n.d.). Being a developing country in
Asia, it is clear that China will focus more on the service sector than the industrial sector to
promote national wealth (Chakraborty 2014). As a result, China should execute the following
suggestions to improve the country's economic performance in the future. First of all, China
needs to boost more innovation in their service industry to enhance the quality of service further
and expand products and service ranges (OECD 2005). This can be obtained by creating policy
to stimulate firms to innovate more, especially in terms of technology. Businesses can adopt
technology to either promote their production, improve speed and efficiency, or optimize the
number of workers in the operating process (Investopedia Staff 2020). This undoubtedly limits
the costs and bolsters the incoming revenue streams. Secondly, with advancements in technology
and online space, China should also pay more attention to Information and Communication
Technologies (ICTs) and digital content service by encouraging firms to implement these factors
in their systems.

Appendix 7:

Considering the most impact of External Demands on China's other communication and personal
services (c34), it is imperative that the government focus on cutting this industry reliance on
external markets. This could be done by expanding the domestic markets with the urbanization
program to covert migrant workers into cities' inhabitants, expanding the middle-class (Yao
2020). As more people earned middle-level income, services that C34 provided, such as
hairdresser and funeral, would likely consume more. Thus, this industry is more dependent on
domestic demand and reduce the risks of externals.
