BJ: It is a written and oral tradition composed of rhythmical words describing an

experience or something of one's imagination in a way deemed beautiful and more
concentrated than ordinary speech.

Russel: It is a gateway to a world of creativity that still reflects the grounds of reality.

BACKGROUND

BJ: Good day everyone, this is BJ Holgado,

Russel: and this is Russel Vincent V. Manalo.

BJ: Today we are talking about the two famous contemporary poems of our fellow
kababayans from our hometown, Batangas.

Russel: These two are the "Adik sa Bato" by Carlo Hornilla and "A Eulogy of Roaches" by
Bienvenido Lumbera.

BJ: They are both contemporary poets that showcase the relevant and current issues of
life and society.

BJ: THEME
In literature, a theme is an underlying idea or construct that runs across the entire work.
Poverty is the main theme in the poetry "A Eulogy of Roaches." It discusses how people
cope with challenges in life in this piece. This served as the message of the poetry that
Lumbera wanted to convey to the readers.

Love, on the other hand, is the main theme of the poetry "Adik sa Bato," as it revolves
around the author's love for a woman. He also used this theme to relate the extrajudicial
killings that occurred around the country. Extrajudicial killings are a form of violence
which served as a minor theme of the poetry.

Meanwhile, the themes of the two poems are related. Because poverty and violence are
societal issues, we can conclude that these two literary works are concerned with what
occurs in society.

Russel: MOOD
Lumbera's famous poem, A Eulogy of Roaches, is an excellent example of a work that
establishes its mood quickly and effectively using just setting and diction. It's bleak and
tense—as evidenced by the lines, dingy crack of wall, where garbage grows, friends to
dark and filth, and a whiff of toxic mist.
On the other hand, Hornilla's "Adik sa Bato" can already be perceived to radiate a
humorous mood from the start. The type of delivery (oral), its aim, the punchlines used,
and the articulation all contributed to the poem's comedic vibe.
Their mood may seem different from each other. Nonetheless, both successfully
represented the appropriate feeling that the readers should feel concerning the
respective subjects.

Minutiae of the Day

One of the Writers of the featured poem departed the material world last September 28.
It is reported that the National Artist for Literature in April 2006, a literary historian and
critic, scholar, author of fine textbooks on Philippine literature, a poet, and playwright,
and librettist for the popular and musical stage, Bienvenido Lumbera, died last month.
Her daughter Tala posted it on her official Facebook page. Figures from the literary
scene mourned Lumbera’s passing.

BJ: POINT OF VIEW

Point of view refers to the viewpoint from which a story is told. Because it does not refer
to himself or is not based on his personal experiences, emotions, or feelings, Lumbera
uses a third person point of view in the poetry "A Eulogy of Roaches." The author is the
only one who tells the story about another person's experience, which he compares to
cockroaches. Lumbera also employed third-person pronouns like his, they, their, and
them.

Meanwhile, because the protagonist in Hornilla's poetry "Adik sa Bato" was himself, he
used a first person point of view. This poetry is all about the author's eternal love for a
woman. He also shared his feelings about the government's anti-drug campaign to the
public through this poetry.

Russel: LITERARY DEVICES & IMAGERY

As "Adik sa Bato" is spoken poetry, the author utilized different kinds of literary devices.
The most eminent are repetition, metaphor, and imagery. However, in this part, we will
only focus on the imagery in the poem. The poet used visual, olfactory, and auditory.
Carlos Hornilla used it to describe his love interest in poetry. Moreover, the writer used it
to establish the setting and story flow.
Similarly, Lumbera displayed various devices in "A Eulogy of Roaches." He used allusion,
personification, and imagery, the same as the previous poem. In terms of imagery, the
literary piece only used visual and olfactory. These devices contributed to the
visualization and representation of the chosen setting to fit the topic.
Both of the poems employed the same technique of using multiple devices to build the
poets' desired topic in the minds of their readers.

BJ: GENRE
A genre is a category of text that share similar form, style, or subject matter. The two
poems we are discussing today use different genres. "A Eulogy of Roaches" was written
in the lyric genre as it does not tell a story but does have a subject to describe: the poor.
Each line is a description of the subject, which also reflects to the state of mind of the
poet. In addition, he also employed sensory language, such as the words “dying, affright,
greed and smell” to generate images for readers that can trigger their senses.

On the other hand, the genre used in "Adik sa Bato" is dramatic since it communicates a
person's or the author's feelings in the form of a monologue. It tells a story or is based
on the personal experience of the author, and is delivered with a combination of drama
and comedy.

Despite their disparate forms, both poets have been successful in making people feel the
emotion they should feel. They have also succeeded in conveying the message of poetry
through different genres.
