SDG of New York State

The State I have chosen is New York State because I have previously lived in New York

and it has lots of future job opportunities that I want to pursue. New York has a ranking of 11th

in the country and has a score of 54.7 which is 16.4% higher than average (SDG Report of the

United States).

The first SDG, no poverty, has gotten a score of 39.1 mainly because New York is ranked

4th in the country for the number of families receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families

for families living in poverty (SDG Report of the United States). New York is also one of the

very few states that allow people to be paid while they are not able to work their normal jobs.

This largely helps families that depend on a source of income from hardworking individuals that

have medical reasons that are not able to attend their normal work to provide for their families.

New York is ranked number 1 out of the US for reducing hunger within the state. This is

mainly because they have measured the adult population to have a BMI of 30 or higher. It is also

known that the exposure to pesticides (per 100,000 people) is 22.1 (SDG Report of the United

States). This is an indication that quality food is being distributed within the state to ensure good

health throughout the population.

SDG 3, Good health and well-being is rated at a score of 59.5 from having a low % of

fertility rate of girls/ women aged 15-19 and a life expectancy of 80.1 years (SDG Report of the
United States). The rate of suicide is only 8.1/100,000 people and also has a rate of only 4.9

deaths due to road collisions out of 100,000 people (SDG Report of the United States).

One of the best SDG’s that New York has taken care of is the Responsible Consumption

and Production of materials and waste. New York has the third-lowest lead emissions in the US

directly from regulations of the governing laws to protect our environment (SDG Report of the

United States). Another air emission restriction of Nitros Oxide, sulfur dioxide, and volatile

organic compounds has led to cleaner air.

New York has no info about what they have done to improve the life below water and the

partnerships for goals. In order to improve their score even more for the SDG’s accomplished,

they should implement a way to balance the ph level in the Hudson River because it leads to

larger bodies of water and has been known to be polluted for decades. There are restrictions to

people swimming in the Hudson but there is almost no way that they have found to regulate the

cleanliness of it to help life below the water. New York can also work on lobbying its

government to boast developing financing in order to open up new market opportunities and

create new jobs for many people. This would help the state also grow out of poverty instead of

just handing struggling families and individuals help when they are in need and plan for the

future of their lives.
