Learning Outcome No. 1

SELF CHECK: There are three choices for you to answer
please select only one by writing the letter in your answer
sheet.

1. The role of the industrial lubricants is to;

a. reduce the amount of friction and wear from

the moving surfaces of machinery.
b. Increase the amount of friction and wear from
the moving surfaces of machinery.
c. Absorb the amount of friction and wear from
the moving surfaces of machinery

2. Lubricants are also termed as the ;

a. heat transfer fluids

b. Cold transfer fluids
c. Warm transfer fluids

3. Which of the following is not common kinds of

industrial lubricants

a. motor oils,
b. marine oils,

a. hard metals in the cooling system and engines
b. Soft metals in the cooling system and engines
c. Medium metals in the cooling system and
engines

5. Anti-oxidants, anti-foaming agents, rust &

corrosion inhibitors, metal deactivators, are

Self check: Answer what is called for: Please provide your own
answer sheet.

1. A coolant is a fluid which flows through a device to

prevent its overheating, transferring the heat
produced by the device to other devices that use or
dissipate it.
2._ Cutting fluid is a coolant that also serves as a
lubricant for metal-shaping machine tools.
3._ Liquid nitrogen _which boils at about -196 °C (77K),
is the most common and least expensive coolant in use.
4.How can be the dry ice and water be used as coolant.?
When dry ice is placed into warm water, a cloud forms._

5. Refrigerants are also known as reaching low

temperatures used for reaching low temperatures by
undergoing phase change between liquid and gas.

Self check:

1. What is the synonym of refrigerant?_

Coolant, freon, refrigerating, R407C, exhaust-gas, , hcfc, sorbent,
cooling-system, evaporator and R404a.
2. What is the difference between Lubricants and
coolant? The basic purpose of coolant is to remove the cutting
heat generated from the cutting zone, and thus to keep the cutting
zone temperature low. The basic purpose of the lubricant is to
reduce the coefficient of friction between the cutter and the rake
surface of the chip and thus reduce the rate of heat generation.
3. What are the types of refrigerant?
CFC = ChloroFluoroCarbons.
 HCFC = HydroChloroFluoroCarbons.
 HFC = HydroFluoroCarbons.
 FC = FluoroCarbons.
 HC = HydroCarbons.
 NH3 = Ammonia.
 CO2 = Carbon Dioxide

4. Give at least 2 common kinds of lubricants?

oil-based, water-based, and silicone-based .
5. Give your reasons why lubricants and coolant is
important in the industry?
The critical functions of coolant in the machining process include:
Reducing and removing the heat build-up in the cutting zone and
workpiece. Provides lubrication to reduce friction between the tool
and removal of the chips. Flushes away chips and small abrasive
particles from the work area.

1 Define housekeeping and explain its purpose

Housekeeping or housecleaning is the systematic
process of making a home neat and clean in
approximately that order. This maybe applied more
broadly that just an individual home, or as a
metaphor for a similar "clean up" process applied
elsewhere such as a procedural reform. It can also be
called household management, which is the act of
overseeing the organizational, financial, day-today
operations of a house or estate, and the managing of
other domestic concerns.

2.Name and describe one cleaning solution.

BRITISH TECHNIQUE
It's a deep cleaning British method, done with three contra -
rotating brushes, which open the pile from every direction leaving
fibers vertical. This is especially recommended for thick woolen
cut piled and velour carpets. This process not only deep cleans the
carpet but retains the fluffiness and luster of the carpet for longer
period.
3. List at least 3 housekeeping tools and equipments.
SINGLE DISC SHAMPOOING
BONNET CLEANING
DRY FOAM TECHNIQUE
4 How to dispose lubricants?
Hot oil is a safety hazard. DO soak up small amounts of oil
with paper towels and throw them out with other garbage.
DO let larger amounts of oil to cool and solidify before you
scrape it into a waste container and dispose of it in your
general waste.
5. What is green cleaning?
Green cleaning is the process of choosing cleaning products that
are better for both people and the planet. Switching to green
cleaning products is good for the health and wellbeing of your
people, and it also prevents unnecessary chemicals from being
released into the environment.

REFLECTION
Generally, the function of a lubricant is only as a fluid which is useful for
smoothing the rotation of the components in the engine. In fact, the
function of lubricants is not that simple. In addition to preventing friction
between moving metals, lubricant functions as a coolant by absorbing
heat from engine components and moving it to the available cooling
system continuously through circulation before being accommodated in
the oil sump. Through its slippery nature, lubricants also function to
prevent piston ring jamming as well as function as a baffle or sealer to
prevent compression leaks from the main components of the engine.
Another function is as a machine cleaner in the presence of detergent
additives and dispersants it contains.
The engine coolant is actually a mixture of water and antifreeze located
on the radiator of your vehicle. Engine coolant prevents your engine
from overheating in hot and freezing weather or too cold in extreme cold
weather. This "too" condition is a very dangerous condition for the
engine.
Engine coolant works by mixing water and 1: 1 antifreeze in a car's
cooling system, but this rule is not always standard. Given the varying
weather conditions, this can occur by increasing the boiling point or
reducing the freezing point. This is done to adjust to the weather outside
the car.
