Ulster and Éire

Ireland is divided into two countries: in the south, the Republic of Ireland (Éire), which is an independent
country with a president of the Republic, and Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom. The
majority of the population in the Republic of Ireland is Catholic and in Northern Ireland it is mainly protestant.
From the 1960s to 1998, a conflict called "The Troubles" raged between Unionists and the Nationalists in
Northern Ireland. The Unionists, mainly Protestant, want to remain part of the UK, the Nationalists, mainly
Catholics, want a unified republic with the South. On Easter Monday 1916, a group of Irish activists occupied
the General Post Office and declared Irish Independence, but the English crushed the rebellion and executed its
leaders. In 1919, the Irish Republican Army (IRA) was founded to fight for Irish independence from the UK.
On 30th of January, 1972 in Northern Ireland, 26 unarmed civil-rights protesters were shot by soldiers of the
British Army. The day was called Bloody Sunday. These troubles are still not completely forgotten today.

The Irish rock band The Cranberries was very successful in

the 1990's. "Zombie" is their best-known song.

Lyrics
Another head hangs lowly,
Child is slowly taken.
And the violence caused such silence.
Who are we mistaken?

But you see, it's not me, it's not my family.

In your head, in your head they are fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are crying...

In your head, in your head,

Zombie, zombie, zombie,
Hey, hey, hey. What's in your head,
In your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie?
Hey, hey, hey, hey, oh, dou, dou, dou, dou, dou...

Another mother's breaking

Heart is taking over
When the violence causes silence,
We must be mistaken.

It's the same old theme since nineteen-sixteen.

In your head, in your head they're still fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are dying...

In your head, in your head,

Zombie, zombie, zombie,
Hey, hey, hey. What's in your head,
In your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie?
