Objectives
The objective of this lesson is to show all of you the small,
easy steps that you can take to reduce, reuse, and recycle.
It is meant to explain why doing so is important. This lesson
is being given in preparation for Earth Day, which is coming
up later this month.
Procedures
For this lesson, I am going to read along with each slide and
ask questions to in order to get you thinking about being
more green. An assignment will be given at the end of this
lesson. You will have until Friday to complete the
assignment.
Introduction to lesson
Teacher: Good morning class.

Students:Good morning Mrs. Vittorino!

T: Today we are going to be learning about three very

important “R” words. The words are “reduce”, “re-use”, and
“recycle”.
*Write them on whiteboard while speaking* Does
anyone know what those words mean? *Give
class a chance to raise their hands and answer* These
3 words are positive steps that we can take to protect our
planet. We’ll be learning about what each of these steps mean
and how we can do our part.
Reduce
T:Reduce means to lower or lesson. When we talk about reducing when
it comes to the three “r”s, it means to use less or throw less away.
Instead of using ten paper towels to clean up a small spill, we use
only one or two. We can also use items that aren’t disposable
(disposable means things that we use once and throw away) such as a
towel or scrap fabric. It also means using less water and
electricity. (this can also be called conserving, which means saving
it for later) What do you all think is a good way to REDUCE?

*Give class opportunity to answer and give suggestions*

There are quite a few things that can be done to reduce and it’s
easy to do your part.
Ways to reduce
Re-use
Does anyone here throw a crayon away if you’ve only used it
one time? *let kids answer*

Most or all of you re-use your crayons. Re-using means to use

something more than once. This can be done with simple
actions like using the same towel after you shower for a few
days instead of washing it every time. You can also use items
for something other than they were made for. You can re-use a
box from a package to store your winter clothes.

Does anyone have an idea for how to re-use something?

*Give students chance to share their ideas*

We want to protect the animals in the ocean as
best we can. We can start by reducing our use
of plastic so that it never ends up in a landfill or
the ocean. We can all do our part to reduce.
Re-use
To re-use means to use an item more than once. You can use it
for the same reason repeatedly, or you can use it for new
tasks. Using a grocery bag as a trash bag is one example of
re-using an item. When we reuse an item, we are also reducing
waste of that item like we already talked about.

*Can anyone tell me another way that we can re-use

something?*
Items that can be reused
Recycle
Recycling is when you take items and change them into
something else. For the most part, it is done at large
recycling plants by people whose job it is to recreate these
items. You can recycle plastic, some metal, paper, and glass.
In Las Vegas, every house is given two large waste bins. One
is for trash, items that cannot be recycled. The other one is
normally blue and is for all the items that you want to
recycle. Our city has made it very easy for all of us to
recycle. All you have to do is separate the items and put
them in the correct bin!

assignment
I want everyone in class to draw for me three things that
they are going to do to follow the 3 Rs. Please color in your
drawings and write a short paragraph of what they show. They
are going to hang on the bulletin board in the hallway until
Earth Day, so don’t forget to put your name on it!

After Earth Day, the whole class is going to vote for who
they think made the best drawing! You cannot vote for your
own, and the top 3 will get to choose and read their favorite
book about being green.
