Act. 2 – Community Pollution Issues Date: 11/19/21

l. Purpose: identify factors within the community that contribute to water, air and land
pollution

- assess the degree of pollution occurring within your community, and evaluate
the community efforts to reduce or prevent it

ll. Materials: notebook, writing instruments, resource materials, resource persons

lll. Procedure:
1. Choose one type of pollution (land, air, water) to evaluate. In a table below, list
specific examples that are occurring in your community of that type of pollution.
2. You will investigate at least two of the pollution problems listed below
3. Using the problem points guidelines below, rate each pollution problem and
record the rating from table I
4. Using table II, solution points guidelines, rate your community’s past and present
efforts to deal with each of the pollution problems. Record ratings on the table
5. Add all the problem points and solutions. Compare your findings with the findings
of your other classmates

Table I: Problem Points

Problem Guidelines
points
0 No problem locally
1 Some problems, coming from other community
2 Mild problem that could become significant
3 Moderate problem, with potential to become hazardous
4 Severe problem, becoming hazardous
5 Critical problem, hazard existing

Table ll: Solution Points

Solution Guidelines
points
0 No pollution, awareness or anti-pollution effort
1 Some community awareness, no community activities, legislation
2. Definite awareness, citizens groups: some movements toward
legislation
3 Strong awareness, much discussions and news coverage;
legislation in process
4 Strong public and private community awareness; legislation in
place
5 Community organized to deal with and prevent pollution;
legislation enforced

and solution
Conclusion:

1. Using the total problem points and solution points, describe the strength and
weaknesses in your community’s pollution status.
 The strength of our community is they are aware and they have a program
for specific problems, one of the difficulties our community is facing is the
implementation of the program due to insufficient funds.
2. What issues does your community deal with effectively? What issues, if any is
Neglected?
 The community is practicing the concept of 3R’s – Reduce, Reuse, and
Recycle to manage the non-biodegradable wastes. On the other hand, soil
contamination is a problem that should be fix by both of the people and the
government, hence it is neglected as of now because of lack funds.
3. What might a rating of 15 problem points and 12 solution points indicate about your
Community?
 This indicate that the community needs to exert extra effort to find other
solutions regarding on the problem. If the people of the community are
responsible to their actions it is easy for the brgy. to execute the solutions
properly.
4. Solution points depend upon community awareness, political action and
Individual responsibility. Explain each of these and give an example.
 Solution points depend upon these three factors since they all have roles to play
for the community to be better.
 Political action – Those who are working in the government must enforce laws in
connection to the problems rising in the community.
Ex. (They can provide funds to help solve the problems and conduct meetings in
the community to give awareness.)
 Community awareness – The goal of this is to increase the community knowledge
of the problems rising in their environment and on how can they cooperate in
reducing the problems.
Ex. (By conducting seminars and symposium about the rising problem in the
community.)
 Individual responsibility – The people inside the community must take role in
community responsibilities in a way of participation and cooperation.
Ex. (Following the rules and regulation of the community is a responsibility of a
person in a community.)
 A responsible citizen and a good governance and community awareness is the
key to reduce community problems.

5. What would you suggest to reduce the pollution problems you have studied? Why
might some people not favor all your suggestions?
 My suggestion in reducing pollution in the community is to:
- Conduct weekly monitoring
- Conduct symposium about the danger of pollution in the environment and
community & make a program on maintaining cleanliness of the
environment
- Provide financial support for the implementation of the program
 One of the reasons why some people are not favor of all of my suggestion is that
maybe the local government is: focused on a different project, lack of man
power, and insufficient budget.
6. Identify at least five actions an individual can take that will help prevent further
Pollutions
 Proper waste disposal
 Recycle waste material
 Use organic products especially organic cleansers, pesticides, insecticides and
fertilizers
 Improve the fertility of the land by planting different plants
 Avoid littering
7. What have your learned from this activity?
- I ‘ve learned from this activity is the importance of prevention of pollution in
the environment. People should focus on these problems because if the
people will not take actions at the end it is the next generation that will
suffer. It is important that we know the negative effect of pollution so that
we can prevent it from getting worse and make a plan on fixing the damage.
