In this unit we will create our own bus shelter. Our statement of inquiry this term is:
“Bus shelters are an area which offers protection from the elements to all members of
society”. The meaning of this sentence is that people should feel comfortable and safe
while waiting for their bus.
Before starting with the design, we should learn a little bit about what a bus shelter is. A
bus shelter is a place where people wait for their buses. It usually contains a place to sit
while waiting and also has a roof for protecting the riders when it is raining or other
kind of natural phenomena.
Nowadays, most of the bus shelters are missing the general qualities that any good
shelter should have. These are: visibility, accessibility, comfort and convenience and
information as mentioned on PPS webpage [ CITATION Bus08 \l 3082 ].
Some of the problems of current bus shelters are that the ceiling doesn’t fully cover the
seats, the majority of the maps that the bus shelters contain are incomprehensible as
they used to be dirty. Another common problem that most bus shelters have is that they
lack seats. This means that not all the people that have to take the bus can have a rest
and as a consequence of this, they will not enjoy the time while waiting for their bus,
which is the main objective of a bus shelter.
From my point of view some ways in which we can improve our own bus shelter is
making more quantity and better quality in the seats, also a good form for trying to
make our bus shelters the most effective would be prevent vandalism and for that we
will have to change a few things so we can add more security in them, so that people
don’t stay in the bus shelter for just passing the time and being there for really enjoy
their time when waiting to the bus.
-For starting, it has to be good located so that everybody found it without any difficulty.
A good place for setting up a bus shelter is near retail stores like bakery, flower shop,
newsstand… which sold products that are able to entertain people while waiting for the
bus.
For installing our bus shelter in there we should follow different rules:
A distance of 3 feet between the bus shelter and the carb, this way we allow
the free movement is boarding and exiting from the bus.
We should take acre that any shop such as a common kiosk are obstructing the
view of the buses that are oncoming.
Exit and entry entrance openings should be oriented, in this way people are
protected from the wind.
-The bus shelter may be visibly for people knowing when the bus is coming.
-The bus shelter should be comfort and convenience, so that our clients could feel safe
and secure, protected from the natural phenomena and also can have a place to seat.
-Anyone will be able to understand the maps that you have in your bus shelter so for
that you have to keep the clear and clean. If these works everyone would know where
the bus is going.
By the time I finish my project I want to achieve a bus shelter which contains all these
features. For this, I will create the design of my bus shelter basing on these main
characteristics.
Criterion B:
Moodboard:
For making sure I made the correct
The reason why I finally decided to make this design was as I found it the best to
prevent vandalism which from my point of view, is the most common problem
nowadays bus shelter have. Also, I consider the short time of classes we have so that I
will have to make a simple shape for my bus shelter. For this reason, I chose to make
the rectangular shape for having time enough for focusing on some tiny details that
will make my bus shelter different and unique from the rest.
Criterion C:
Process: 1 2 3 4 5 6
Mark out the correct
measurements.
Cut the pieces.
Mould the seats.
Glue the seats to the base.
Paint the pieces.
Make the tiny details (air
conditioner, security camera,
panel of information…
Search for two advertisements.
Colour the tiny details.
Stick the tiny details into its
correspondent piece.
Glue all of the pieces.
Criterion D:
From my point of view, some aspects I would improve if I have the chance of redoing
this work would be changing the shape of my bus shelter. This is caused as when I
started this project I decided to focus on the tiny details and keep the shape simple
because of the little amount of time we have for building it up. The way in which I
would improve this would be by keeping the same ideas and components my bus
shelter may contain but change the outside shape.
For testing if my bus shelter is suitable for my target audience, I will ask a few
questions two ten of my classmates:
3. Is it aesthetically pleasing?
Miranda: Yes, it is well painted & even features ads like a real bus shelter, it is
well thought out.
Barbara: Yes, but it could be better as it is dark.
Maria: Yes, because there are many details.
Mohamed: Yes, it holds every tiny detail bus shelter may have.
Jorge: Yes.
Liam: Yes.
Mar: Yes.
Gaby: For sure.
Santiago: Yes.
Ryota: Yes.
Furthermore, to make a more accurate evaluation of my final product I have asked these
same questions to an expert of public transport that is actually living in Qatar, this
would be Mr. Daniel.
After hearing at my target audience opinions, I finally decided to change the shape of
the bus shelter into another more difficult. The way in which I should change this will
be redoing it and since the beginning work on making the correct measurements so
when you are building it up, every piece fix where it should. Also, another thing I would
change will be the color as in general they didn’t like it. However, I will keep the idea of
having the Qatari flag as I found it a way to connect with the place it is going to belong
to. The black will turn into a lighter color. Some color ideas I have look at are:
