BUS SHELTER

SOI: Bus shelters are an area which offers protection

from the elements to all members of society.

Layla Raventós Monegal 9B

Criterion A:

A1: The situation

In this unit we will create our own bus shelter. Our statement of inquiry this term is:
“Bus shelters are an area which offers protection from the elements to all members of
society”. The meaning of this sentence is that people should feel comfortable and safe
while waiting for their bus.

Before starting with the design, we should learn a little bit about what a bus shelter is. A
bus shelter is a place where people wait for their buses. It usually contains a place to sit
while waiting and also has a roof for protecting the riders when it is raining or other
kind of natural phenomena.

Nowadays, most of the bus shelters are missing the general qualities that any good
shelter should have. These are: visibility, accessibility, comfort and convenience and
information as mentioned on PPS webpage [ CITATION Bus08 \l 3082 ].

Some of the problems of current bus shelters are that the ceiling doesn’t fully cover the
seats, the majority of the maps that the bus shelters contain are incomprehensible as
they used to be dirty. Another common problem that most bus shelters have is that they
lack seats. This means that not all the people that have to take the bus can have a rest
and as a consequence of this, they will not enjoy the time while waiting for their bus,
which is the main objective of a bus shelter.

From my point of view some ways in which we can improve our own bus shelter is
making more quantity and better quality in the seats, also a good form for trying to
make our bus shelters the most effective would be prevent vandalism and for that we
will have to change a few things so we can add more security in them, so that people
don’t stay in the bus shelter for just passing the time and being there for really enjoy
their time when waiting to the bus.

A2: Research plan

1.How is going to be our bus shelter different from the rest?

Our bus shelter is going to be absolutely unique. The main idea we have for building up
a bus shelter that is different from the rest is making some modifications as mentioned
before. One of these main changes would be changing the pay method, as supposed you
all know when you move by public transport such as the bus you used to pay inside it.
Our objective will be installing a machine for paying before entering the bus shelter.
Once you have paid, you will receive a ticket which you have to give it to the driver
who is in charge of your bus. This idea could sound childish and useless but behind it
there is a lot of intelligence joined together, due to this vandalism would most probably
end up decreasing, also our bus shelter would be more clean and the last improvement
this will cause will be that it will give the people more chances to be seated as a
consequence of vandalism decreasing.
2.How to prevent vandalism?
The way in which we will prevent vandalism in the most effective way is going to be
installing the new pay method as it will not make any kind of sense if someone pays
only for entering in the bus shelter and then is not going to pick the bus. Another way in
which we can decrease vandalism will be adding some cameras inside the bus shelter, in
that way we would be able to have the absolutely control about what is happening in
every single moment on our bus shelters. This method could sound expensive, but if
you really take your time and think in the amount of problems that this machine is going
to take you off, you will see that it will be a such a good investment for improving our
final product.

3.How is the bus station going to look like?

Our bus shelter is going to have several characteristics that make it different from the
rest. For beginning it has to be visible so that people find it easy to go in and, in that
way, we don’t lose any client for the difficulty of finding our shelter, after that it has to
be safe as nowadays feeling safe is very important as anyone likes not feeling
themselves in a comfortable way. Apart from that, it will have maps where you can
clearly see where the bus is going and the different places the bus is going to pass
through, but only that, also our bus shelter is going to be located in a place where
everybody should have access, in a place where the sunlight can arrive as it will has to
be illuminated and for ending a place where everybody could enjoy their rest in there
while waiting for the bus.

4.How much time will take to build the bus station?

If everything goes on the right way the model should be finished on six days, and in the
case I found with some kind of problem while doing it, the best way in which I can
solve it will be knowing what have been the mistake and making a briefly research
about how to solve it in the most quickly and effective way.

5.Will the bus station be easy to be recognized?

Of course, is one of our characteristics and we will make sure that it keeps like this, as
we will use different kind of stuff for making sure that our bus shelter is enough
indicated so that everybody knows where it is.

6.What can I do to keep my bus shelter as clean as possible?

For trying to keep our bus shelter and surroundings environment as clean as possible we
can do whatever we have in our hands, which is having a trash can inside it so people
can throw the papers of candies, bottles, magazines or whatever they don’t need to the
bin. Also hiring a cleaning team for the night so we can be able to know for certain that
next morning you will find it in the same way as yesterday.
What I mean before with the expression “whatever we have in our hands” is that an
obvious fact that we all know is, a bus shelter is a public area where everybody can go,
so that we have to try all to be the most careful so that it maintains clean.

7.Will advertisements be allowed in the bus station?

Inside our bus shelters advertisements will be allowed. Advertisements are a good way
for keeping the people entertain and help them also know new products that they might
not, and it can be helpful for their dairy lives.
8.Will the bus station have seats for handicapped people?
Our bus shelter will have one seat for handicapped people as on inside the bus. One
explanation why we only have one seat and no more is that we don’t count with money
enough for making all the best, so we have to made priority things. One of the reasons
why we don’t make these a priority one is because we supposed that if while waiting a
bus they are more than one handicapped people, one adolescent or the rest of the people
that might be also waiting for the bus can give them their place on a normal seat, and
the same if there is some pregnant.

9.What is the colour that the bus station will reflect?

We have decided to make our bus shelter the same colours as Qatar´s flag. We all know
that Qatar is a small place where we should be proud of living in.

10. Is our bus shelter going to count with air conditioner?

We have decided that our bus shelter is going to have air conditioner as Qatar is a really
hot place. In fact, Qatar is the 5th hottest country in all the world. We want to make our
clients feel comfortable, for that the temperature may be acceptable because if not the
wait till the bus come is going to be heavy.

A4: Design Brief

A bus shelter must contain many different features, as mentioned before:

-For starting, it has to be good located so that everybody found it without any difficulty.
A good place for setting up a bus shelter is near retail stores like bakery, flower shop,
newsstand… which sold products that are able to entertain people while waiting for the
bus.
For installing our bus shelter in there we should follow different rules:

 A distance of 3 feet between the bus shelter and the carb, this way we allow
the free movement is boarding and exiting from the bus.
 We should take acre that any shop such as a common kiosk are obstructing the
view of the buses that are oncoming.
 Exit and entry entrance openings should be oriented, in this way people are
protected from the wind.

-The bus shelter may be visibly for people knowing when the bus is coming.
-The bus shelter should be comfort and convenience, so that our clients could feel safe
and secure, protected from the natural phenomena and also can have a place to seat.
-Anyone will be able to understand the maps that you have in your bus shelter so for
that you have to keep the clear and clean. If these works everyone would know where
the bus is going.

By the time I finish my project I want to achieve a bus shelter which contains all these
features. For this, I will create the design of my bus shelter basing on these main
characteristics.
Criterion B:

B3: Final Design

Moodboard:
For making sure I made the correct

decision choosing this design I

decide to ask some of my
teammates about their opinion about my bus
shelter:
o Tsunami (9A): The bus shelter looks good,
it has a nice aesthetic and it looks safe. I
like the adds that have been added make
it look nice and there is also information
that makes it easier to get to places.
o Mohammed (9B): The bus shelter looks
good, it has a nice aesthetic and it
looks safe. I like the adds that have been added make it look nice and there is
also information that makes it easier to get to places. What I would change
would to make the inside bigger.
o Maria (9A): I like how creative the idea of having a security camera is to make
people feel safer. I also like the colours scheme you used because it appeals to
the eye. The details you put are make the bus shelter more aesthetic and I like
the ads you have since the make the model look realistically.

The reason why I finally decided to make this design was as I found it the best to
prevent vandalism which from my point of view, is the most common problem
nowadays bus shelter have. Also, I consider the short time of classes we have so that I
will have to make a simple shape for my bus shelter. For this reason, I chose to make
the rectangular shape for having time enough for focusing on some tiny details that
will make my bus shelter different and unique from the rest.

B4: Working Drawings

The measurements of the

different part of my bus shelter
are:
-Bases: 30 x15 cm.
-Side faces: 15 x 15 cm.
-Panel of information: 8 x 2
cm.
-Security camera: 4 x 2 cm.
-Security entrance bars: 7cm.
-Seats: 4 x 4 cm.
-Advertisements: 10 x 10 cm.

Criterion C:

C1: Manufacturing Plan

Process: 1 2 3 4 5 6
Mark out the correct
measurements.
Cut the pieces.
Mould the seats.
Glue the seats to the base.
Paint the pieces.
Make the tiny details (air
conditioner, security camera,
panel of information…
Search for two advertisements.
Colour the tiny details.
Stick the tiny details into its
correspondent piece.
Glue all of the pieces.

Criterion D:

D3: Improvements in my Design

From my point of view, some aspects I would improve if I have the chance of redoing
this work would be changing the shape of my bus shelter. This is caused as when I
started this project I decided to focus on the tiny details and keep the shape simple
because of the little amount of time we have for building it up. The way in which I
would improve this would be by keeping the same ideas and components my bus
shelter may contain but change the outside shape.

Some ideas I have found that could work as it are:

D4: Client´s Opinion

For testing if my bus shelter is suitable for my target audience, I will ask a few
questions two ten of my classmates:

1. Do you like my bus shelter?

Miranda: Yes.

Liam: Yes.
Mar: Yes.
Gaby: Yes. However, I would change the black for the Qatari flag.
Santiago: Yes.
Ryota: Yes.

5. Does the design represent Qatar?

Miranda: Yes, because it features the flag on the back of the bus shelter.
Barbara: only the flag represents Qatar
Maria: Not really, there is nothing traditional shown.
Mohamed: Yes.
Jorge: Yes.
Liam: Yes.
Mar: Yes.
Gaby: Yes.
Santiago: Yes.
Ryota: Yes.

6. Is the bus shelter missing any component?

chair were to ride the bus, they’d be able to enter the facility.
Barbara: Change the color and maybe the seats positioned.
Maria: Add components for more disabled people.
Mohamed: I will improve the colors and make the bus shelter a little bit bigger.
Jorge: Thinking that some details you have added are unnecessary and focus
more on other things.
Liam: I would make the entrance bigger.
Mar: I would change the shape as it’s so simple.
Gaby: If it was me, I would change the black color into a more lightly as dark
attracts hot.
Santiago: I would change the entrance but keeping the idea of the security
entrance.
Ryota: I will change the shape of the bus shelter.

9. In a scale from 1 to 8, which grade will you give to my bus shelter?

Miranda: 7
Barbara: 7
Maria: 7.5
Mohamed: 7
Jorge: 7
Liam: 7
Mar: 6
Gaby: 5
Santiago: 6
Ryota: 7

Furthermore, to make a more accurate evaluation of my final product I have asked these
same questions to an expert of public transport that is actually living in Qatar, this
would be Mr. Daniel.

1. Do you like my bus shelter? Yes, it is very creative.

2. Is the size of the bus shelter correct? I think so. However, I would suggest
more space for wheelchairs.
3. Is it aesthetically pleasing? Yes, it is.
4. Do you like the final color my bus shelter reflects? Yes, we need to make
sure people won´t get confused.
5. Does the design represent Qatar? Yes, the flag is pretty representative.
6. Is the bus shelter missing any component? Yes, I miss a ramp for
wheelchairs.
7. Do the seats look comfortable? Yes.
8. How will you improve my bus shelter? I would add a ramp and probably
add more space for people with disabilities or pregnant ladies.
9. In a scale from 1 to 8, which grade will you give to my bus shelter? 7

After hearing at my target audience opinions, I finally decided to change the shape of
the bus shelter into another more difficult. The way in which I should change this will
be redoing it and since the beginning work on making the correct measurements so
when you are building it up, every piece fix where it should. Also, another thing I would
change will be the color as in general they didn’t like it. However, I will keep the idea of
having the Qatari flag as I found it a way to connect with the place it is going to belong
to. The black will turn into a lighter color. Some color ideas I have look at are:
