Learning Concepts

A. Woven Products: Textile, Fabrics and Clothing

Woven products such as clothing, bags, and accessories that are based on folk art
and design are gaining popularity locally and globally. This way, our products are not
only recognized by more people but also provide employment and foster development
and sustainability of the art craft industry.
With the use of modern technology, fashion designers have developed the tactile
qualities and unique texture of our local products for comfort and style.
Barong Tagalog, or simply, “Barong,” has its origins from the Spanish rule in the
Philippines where the Spanish colonizers wanted to distinguish themselves from the
indios by making them wear thin and transparent clothing to prevent carrying of
weapons, no pockets to prevent thievery, and not tucked under the waistband to mark
their status.
The fabric was made of piña, jusi, or banana.
Variations of Barong Tagalog today:
-barong worn by women
-different embroidery designs and colors
-“polo barong” was designed to be worn at work. They have short sleeves and are made
out of cotton, ramie, chiffonille.
