Arts and crafts of MIMAROPA are very interesting because of its
nature, historical background, designs and many others. You learned that
these arts and crafts are their means of livelihood because they make arts
and crafts for long hours just to meet their client’s orders and some
deliveries to other countries. Most of their arts and crafts are hand woven
that are used for jars, hats, roof materials and walls.

LESSON
MODULE 2: ARTS AND CRAFTS OF VISAYAS

Normal people really tend to forget to appreciate and to preserve the

different work of arts and crafts from different areas around the Philippines.
The worst is that people disregard them and exchange them for arts and
crafts from other countries. They buy, eat, use, and patronize imported
products more than their own. In this lesson, you are going to learn how do
the artists or makers of arts and crafts make their products and what are
the stories behind their work, the history, the process and the difficulties
they encountered just to make their product a true work of art.

Arts and Crafts of Visayas

Visayan arts and crafts are well known for their hand weaving. They
have different handicrafts that are made by long hours of weaving with the
use of their bare hands. Some weavers actually injure themselves in the
process because of their work.

AKLAN

The province of Aklan is known for their basket, tray

and mat making. These are their best source of
livelihood in their area. They have been practicing
traditional procedures in making hand loomed weaving
for a long time to maintain the quality of their works.
They have different products like Hablon, Patadyong; a
traditional Filipino cloth worn by women like a skirt.
They also have Pinya/Jusi or cloth made on Pinya
fibers. Bariw, a type of pandan leaves used in their mat making. Pagrara it
Banig is also a form of mat weaving and the last one is Capiz/Kapis, one of
the trademarks of Aklan and Iloilo. They dry, press, and cut shells to create
a new art out of it.

NEGROS ISLAND

The art of weaving in Negros Island is a big part of

their rich culture. This has been their great source
of livelihood. Their weaving practices are very much
abundant in their roofs, clothing, walls and hats.
They also have pinya weaving as a part of their
business in Negros. But the one thing that stands
out in Negros handicrafts is their Sinamay Textile.
It is made of Abaca just like in Bicol region but
they have their own unique way of making it.

CEBU

Cebu is known for its furniture because

most of the designers from the Philippines
are from Cebu. The most popular
handicraft made by Cebuano’s is the
guitar. It had been famous to other
countries because of its sound,
craftsmanship and durability.

SAMAR

The art of Basey in Samar is known for its colorful

handwoven or banig that came from tikog leaves. There
are two processes in making the Basey, one is weaving
and the other one is embroidery.

BOHOL

Basketry is the most common and still

popular among the people of Bohol,
especially in the town of Antequera were
most weavers are women. It is the source
of livelihood among their community.
Their finished products are then brought
to the town square to sell to traders going
to Cebu, Manila and other neighboring
