Lecture-3: Brief review of working of diodes a
nd transistors. Difference between power-

Lectures-4&5: Some construction details of p
ower diodes, reverse voltage breakdown due t

avalanche and reach through conditions, con
cept of large drift region, (P)-(N-)-(N) junction,
conductivity modulation. Static and dynamic
characteristics of power diodes, reverse reco

phenomena and associated problems, fast an
d slow diodes. Brief discussion of power tran
sistor.
Lecture-6: Thyristor construction, two transis
tor analogy of thyristor. Thyristor under forwa
rd bias
and reverse bias, thyristor triggering and com

ment of dv/dt and di/dt protection, snubber ci

Lectures 11 to 13: Single-phase AC to DC contr
olled conversion using thyristors:- half controlle

displacement power factor, supply current

Lectures 14 to 16: Three-phase AC to DC contro
lled conversion using thyristors:- half controlled
and fully controlled converters, load voltage an
d source current waveforms and expressions fo

average output voltage and power factor for hig
hly inductive load, 6-pulse and 12-pulse type 3
phase rectifiers, concept of bidirectional power
flow and brief idea of back to back connected
HVDC link.
Lectures 17 to 20: DC to DC conversion: Conce
pt of buck and boost converter assuming ideal
switches and diodes. Example of thyristor base
d buck converter (with relevant waveforms) and
its
comparison with MOSFET based buck converter
, advantage of higher frequency switching,
limitations due to switching speed, switching lo
sses, stray inductance etc., basic power electro
nic
switching block.
Lectures 21 to 24: DC to DC conversion with iso
lated output: fly-back and forward converters,
considerations on high frequency transformer d
esign, practical SMPS circuits.
Lectures 25 to 30: DC to AC conversion (Inversio
n): DC to single phase AC conversion, DC to
three phase AC conversion, Different types of p
ole voltages, PWM Inverter, PWM techniques –
Sine wave PWM (SPWM), hysteresis current con
trol based PWM, variable-voltage variable-
frequency inverter application in AC motor drive
.
Lectures 31 to 32: AC to AC conversion: phase
angle control using TRIACs, Introduction to
Cycloconverters.

Apart from the lecture classes (3 lectures per
week), the students will undergo 2 Hr laborato

session per week. Laboratory experiments hav
