MODERN TECHNOLOGY
UTILIZATION FOR TRAINING
Online /web based/ e-learning

 Refers to instruction and delivery of training through

internet or web.
Advantages of e-learning

 Supports company’s business strategy and objectives

 Accessible at any time and any place
 Audience can be employees, managers, vendors,
customers and clients
 Delivered to geographically dispersed employees
 Training delivered faster and to more employees in a
short period of time
 Paper work related to enrollment and assessment can be
eliminated
 Updating is easy
 Can link to other content, experts and peers
Features of E- learning

Content-text,
video, graphics,
sound

Link to other Collaboration

resources and sharing-
peers, trainees,
Training materials experts, mentors ,
EPSS advisors

Use of technology in training

 Cost of technology decreases

 Companies recognize the potential cost savings
 Need for customized training increases
 Usage of social media for learning which gives
employees access to and control their learning
through relationships and collaborations with others.
Benefits of using technology in training

 Employees can gain control over when and where they

receive training

 Employees can access knowledge and expert systems on

an as-needed basis

 The learning environment can look, feel, and sound just

like the work environment (VR, AR, simulations)

 Employees can choose the type of media they want to use

in a training program (print, sound, video)
Benefits of using technology in training

 Paperwork and time needed for administrative

activities is reduced ( course enrollment, testing and
records done electronically)

 Employees’ accomplishments during training can be

monitored

 Traditional training methods can be delivered to

trainees rather than requiring them to come to a
central training location
Technology facilitates Collaboration

 Digital Collaboration is the use of technology to

enhance and extend employee’s abilities to work together
regardless of their geographic proximity.
 Comprised of Electronic messaging systems
 Electronic meeting systems
 Social networks
 Document handling systems
 Can be either synchronous / asynchronous
 Synchronous –trainers and learners interact with each
other live and in real time
 Asynchronous – non real time interactions- self paced
courses.
Technology gives learner’s control

 Select how content is presented , pause, skip and

review content.
 Self paced exercises
 Can explore links to other material
Technology creates a dynamic learning
environment

 Trainer design the instruction but it is delivered

through technology – trainer acts as coach.
 Learning occurs through exchange with other
learners –blogs, wikis, virtual team projects, social
media training, games, simulations
 Access experts or resource materials available on
internet.
 Training delivery and administration done through
LMS
Developing Effective Online Learning-Need
Assessment

 The need assessment process for web-based

training or any other online learning should include
 Technology assessment(Organisational analysis)
 Assessment of skills that users need for online
training ( person analysis)
 Technical analysis- minimum requirement-memory,
hard drive, space, software, processing speed
Developing Effective Online Learning- Design
and Development phase

 Create positive learning experience

 Flowcharts/ storyboards that include course components
– main menu, modules, web pages for each lesson,
assessment, discussion forums, images, help menus
 Use multiple media- text, animation, pictures, videos,
audio, games, e-books
 E- learning should be designed to minimize content or
work unrelated to learning objectives.
 Learning content properly arranged- small meaningful
modules
 Repurposing – directly translating instructor led- face
to face training program to online format need to be
avoided.
Developing Effective Online Learning-Evaluation

 End users need to be involved in formative

evaluation-to ensure that music, graphics, icon,
animation, videos do not interfere with learning
 End users need to test the content, the site map to
guarantee that they can easily move through the
learning module and access resources and links to
other websites.
