GEOLOGICAL HAZARDS AND MITIGATION

Big Idea: Mitigation is the effort to reduce/prevent loss of life and property by lessening the impact of
disasters. For it to be effective, one has to take action before the next disaster.

 Adaption – reduce vulnerability to harmful effects of natural disasters; adapting to life in the
event of disasters.

What to Do Before an Earthquake

 Make sure you have a fire extinguisher, first aid kit, a battery-powered radio, a flashlight, and
extra batteries.
 Learn first aid.
 Learn how to turn off the gas, water, and electricity.
 Make up a plan of where to meet your family after an earthquake.
 Do not leave heavy objects on shelves.

What to Do During an Earthquake

 Stay calm. If you’re indoors, stay inside. If you’re outside, stay outside.
 If indoors, stand against a wall near the center of the building, in a doorway, or crawl under heavy
furniture.
 If outdoors, stay away from power lines.
 If in a car, stop the car and stay inside the car. Stay away from buildings.

What to Do After an Earthquake

 Check yourself and others for injuries.


 Check water, gas, and electric lines for damage.
 Turn on the radio. Don’t use the phone unless it’s an emergency.
 Stay out of damaged buildings/areas.
 Be careful around broken glass and debris.
 Stay away from tsunamis.
 Follow emergency protocols in workplaces.
 Expect aftershocks.

What to Do to Reduce Risks

 Take note of surroundings.


 Gather all members of household.
 Put together an emergency supply kit.
 Put important things on containers, preventing them from ashfall.
 Follow local authorities.
