Rationale statement- Standard #9

Standard #9 Professional Learning

The teacher engages in ongoing individual and collaborative professional learning designed to

impact practice in ways that lead to improved learning for each student, using evidence of

student achievement, action research and best practice to expand a repertoire of skills, strategies,

materials, assessments and ideas to increase student learning (New Jersey Professional Standards

for Teachers Alignment with InTASC, 2014, p. 12).

Artifact: Story Board- Your Teacher-Self

Date of Completion: April 27, 2020

Course completed in: EDUC 212-02

Rationale Statement:

The artifact that I am using for this rationale statement is my final exam from my foundations of

education class. We were to create a story board that described us as what we want our teacher-

selves to look like, and then type up a short essay explaining why we chose certain aspects of our

board. This artifact relates to standard 9.i.4 “the teacher actively seeks professional, community,

and technological resources, within and outside the school, as supports for analysis, reflection,

and problem solving” (New Jersey Professional Standards for Teachers Alignment with InTASC,
2014, p. 12). In this final, I wrote about how I did a lot of reflecting on my education and how I

want my teacher self to look in order to create the story board. I feel that this is a form of seeking

resources to analyze and reflect, because it made me realize that I really do want to continue this

career path. I also explained how my reflecting made me realize I want a warm and welcoming

classroom where no student has to feel anxious or worried about coming to school. I mentioned

how I would like my students to look back on our time spent together and know that I had a

positive impact on their lives like I have had teachers do for me in the past.

I did create this artifact a little over a year ago, but I do remember what the process was like

writing it. In order to make our story board, we were told to look through newspapers and

magazines and cut out anything that jumped out at us and reminded us of teaching and how we

want to be as teachers. I remember seeing a bunch of cozy furniture on a magazine page, so I cut

it out and glued it on my board. I wanted to show that I want my classroom to be a comfortable

and cozy environment where students can come and be happy and eager to learn. I also cut out a

lot of motivational words and quotes to symbolize the positive light I will be for my students. I

wrote all about my story board in the final exam paper that I submitted.

I think this artifact is beneficial to my teacher self because I will be able to look back at this

paper and remember the positivity I wanted to bring into my classroom. I hope that I am able to

look back at this artifact and remember how excited and eager I was to get out into the teaching

world and truly make a difference.
