How to Calculate Aggregate Marks For

Eligibility and Scholarship Calculations for Admissions - 2021

The following shall be followed before deciding whether the candidate is eligible for a Programme or not.
1) Valid Board / University: The Board / University from where the applicant has passed the eligibility qualification
are recognized by the regulatory / statutory body.
1.1 University shall be recognized by UGC – University Grants Commission.
1.2 Board shall be recognized by COBSE – Council of Boards of School Education in India.
1.3 Autonomous institute recognized by MHRD, Govt. of India.
List of Not considered Boards/Universities is uploaded in Shared Folder. For any clarifications, please
contact Verification Team.
2) Passing each compulsory Subject: In the qualifying examination, the applicant:
 Must be declared pass by concerned Board/University in the qualifying Examination &
 Must obtain passing marks in each subject prescribed under the respective eligibility criteria of LPU for
the concerned Programme.
Illustration:
Suppose the student seeks admission in B. Tech (ME). As per the Prospectus, Eligibility criteria of B. Tech.
(ME) is 90% with English, Physics and Math. So only those students are eligible who have passed 10+2 and
have obtained passing marks in these three subjects (Eng., Physics, and Math). If student is declared fail or
compartment in one of the compulsory subjects (subject as defined by LPU for admissions in the specific
Programme), then he will not be eligible for Admission.
3) Reappear cases shall not be accepted for admissions. In case of result awaited cases, the result up to previous
term must be submitted by the student at the time of admission.
Illustration:
Suppose an applicant seeks admission in MBA but result of final semester of BBA is awaited, then applicant
must submit result up to five semesters of BBA at the time of admission and for 6 th semester, we can provide
the time and take relevant undertaking. However if result of last semester (6 th semester) is out and applicant
is having some reappear or compartment, then we will not accept the admission just on the basis of 5 th
Semester marks.
4) Percentage Calculations
The ‘Eligibility Criteria (Qualifying Exam)’ as specified in Part B of Prospectus 2021 details percentage of
aggregate marks required in qualifying examination and the same will be calculated using following methods:
4.1 In case of Programmes after 10th and 10+2, calculation of aggregate marks will be done considering best
five subjects (with highest marks) in the qualifying examination. However, the marks obtained in
subject(s) prescribed under the respective eligibility criteria of LPU for the concerned Programme must
be taken into account for calculation of aggregate marks. This clause is applicable for calculating eligibility
as well as Scholarship for Indian applicants.
For International applicants, If applicant is taking admission in B. Tech. (Computer Science & Engineering)
programme, where eligibility is Pass in 10+2 with (Physics, Mathematics and ELR), candidate must satisfy

In case of any ambiguity, please contact Verification Team

ELR requirement from either of the options mentioned below and consideration of Physics and
Mathematics in the calculation of eligibility and scholarship would be mandatory. Assuming that 5
courses are required for calculation, best 3 from remaining courses may be considered accordingly.
English would not be considered as a mandatory course for International applicants from this session
onwards.
An international applicant can satisfy ELR (English Language) requirement from any of the options
mentioned below:
a. Either candidate has studied English as a subject in 10th or in higher qualification, or
b. Qualifying Examination of candidate was in English Medium, or
c. Candidate has done IELTS / TOEFL / Cambridge English Certificate.
4.2 In case of Programmes after Diploma, Graduation, Post-Graduation etc. the criteria for overall marks /
score as defined by awarding Board / University will be considered for calculation of Eligibility as well as
Scholarship.

4.3 In case of improvement examination taken by student: It may happen that to improve the results;
student has given improvement of all or few courses which he/she has taken in 10+2 or in 10th. Now for
calculating the eligibility of such student, we can consider the improved result (course wise) for
calculating the eligibility as well as scholarship.

For example: Obtained marks in original result are: English – 50, Math – 72, Physics – 60, Chemistry –
66, Biology – 63 and in improved result are: English – 80, Math – Absent, Physics – 50, Chemistry – 66,
Biology – 93.
The calculation of percentage must be done as under:
English – 80
Math – 72
Physics – 60
Chemistry – 66
Biology – 93

Total 371 out of 500

The percentage of marks obtained by the student is 74.2% (371/500*100)

It may be noted here that in this case student may come up with two transcripts; one is for first attempt
and second will be of improved attempt. So it will be mandatory for admission officer to attach both
transcripts in the file of student.

5) Few Important Points regarding Subjects to be chosen

a) Certain Board declares the result by explicitly excluding one or more subjects as additional (optional)
subjects, even in such cases, calculations for aggregate marks will be done as per Clause mentioned under

In case of any ambiguity, please contact Verification Team

head ‘Percentage Calculation’ i.e. excluded / optional / elective / additional subject may be considered for
calculation of best five subjects as required.

b) Theory and Practical as one subject: In certain Boards, marks list reflect Theory and Practical marks of a
course as separate entities just like two separate subjects e.g. physics and physics practical as two different
subjects. However in some other board both may be reflected in a single column. So to calculate eligibility
and Scholarship we have been computing both theory and practical of a course as a single subject even if it
was shown as a two different entities on marks sheet.
Example: Assume that the student has obtained the following marks in theory papers and practical papers.
The maximum marks for theory paper is 70 and practical paper is 30.

Obtained marks are: English – 50, Math – 72, Physics – 60, Physics Practical – 28, Chemistry – 66,
Chemistry Practical – 27, Biology – 63, Biology Practical – 25.
The calculation of percentage must be done as under:
English – 50 = 50 out of 100
Math – 72 = 72 out of 100
Physics – 60 + 28 = 88 out of 100
Chemistry – 66 + 27 = 93 out of 100
Biology – 63 + 25 = 88 out of 100
Total 391 out of 500
The percentage of marks obtained by the student is 78.2% (391/500*100)

c. Two Parts of Subjects / Courses as a single Subject (mainly in AP Board):

(i) Some Boards show the marks of Mathematics as Mathematics-A and Mathematics-B (or similarly
other subjects) whether studied in same year or two different years (say 10+1 and 10+2). For
calculation of eligibility and award of Scholarship we will consider these two subjects as one subject
irrespective of they are shown as two different entries on marks sheet.
(ii) In certain Boards, a specific subject particularly Biology is not being shown as a single entity rather as
two entities Botany and Zoology. For such cases, we will consider botany and zoology as a single
course.
d. All Subjects may also be considered: If student is not able to satisfy the eligibility criteria as per the clause
mentioned in point no. 4 above then all the subjects registered may be considered for calculating
aggregate percentage for eligibility only but not for scholarship.

e. If an applicant has passed the qualifying exam by appearing for less than 5 subjects, then all subjects (which
will be less than 5 in this case) will be considered. However, applicant must have studied and passed the
subject(s) prescribed under the respective eligibility criteria of LPU for the concerned programme.

f. IMPORTANT: Certain Boards (e.g. ICSE) declare pass by considering 4 subjects only in ISC i.e.12 th. However,
the applicant may have studied more than 4 subjects (additional subject) from such a board. Situation may
arise where student may be scoring lesser percentage by considering 5 subjects but scoring more

In case of any ambiguity, please contact Verification Team

percentage by considering 4 or lesser subjects as per Board’s policy. So in such cases, we may consider 4 (or
lesser subjects) as per Board for Eligibility as well as Scholarship.

g. IMPORTANT for International Admissions: Certain Boards (e.g. Cambridge/Pearson Edexcel) declare pass
by considering 2 or 3 subjects for A level with 5 at O Level.

However, the applicant may have studied more than minimum number of subjects as mentioned above from
such a board. Situation may arise where student may be scoring lesser percentage by considering more than
minimum subjects as mentioned above but scoring more percentage by lesser subjects as per Board’s policy. So
in such cases, we may consider minimum number of subjects as per Board for Eligibility as well as Scholarship.

h. Few Important Points regarding percentage calculation of International Admissions: In an Indian education
system, marks of 10th, 11th and 12th are being awarded on separate transcripts by boards. However, in some
countries like Nepal (11th and 12th together), Afghanistan (10th, 11th and 12th together) etc. marks of 10th, 11th and
12th may be reflected on a single transcript. So to calculate eligibility and Scholarship in this case, we will
consider the marks scored by the student in all two/three years as mentioned above. So percentage or grand
total given by board/university will be considered for eligibility as well as for awarding of scholarship.
Consideration of Best 5 subjects - condition will not be applicable for any calculation for all such cases but
admission officer has to make ensure that student must have received pass grade in all the mandatory subjects
as mentioned in the eligibility file in shared folder of that programme.

i. Important for calculating the eligibility of International students from Zambia who have done Grade 12/
Joint School Certificate /General Certificate: In Zambia Education System, student has a choice to opt from the
subject groups like Natural Sciences/ Arts/ Commercial/ Social Sciences etc. with English as a one of the
compulsory subject. In natural sciences basket; student has an option to select from Agricultural Science/
Biology/ Physics/ Chemistry/ Science with a condition that student can either take science; or physics and
chemistry separately.

So when such student applies for an admission in programmes like B.Sc. Food Technology/ Nutrition &
Dietetics/ Biotechnology where eligibility requires physics and chemistry as an individual subjects; we can
calculate the eligibility by considering science in place of these two subjects.

It may be noted here that consideration of alternate subjects in the eligibility calculation will not be applicable
in the programmes run by governing bodies. For example: B.Pharm.

j. Important for calculating the eligibility of International students from Lesotho who have done A Level : In
Lesotho Education System, student studies Physical Science instead of Physics and Chemistry at A Level. So
when such student applies for an admission in B.Sc. Food Technology/ Nutrition & Dietetics/ Biotechnology /
B.Tech where eligibility requires physics or chemistry as an individual subjects; we can calculate the eligibility by
considering physical science in place of these two subjects. It may be noted here that consideration of alternate
subjects in the eligibility calculation will not be applicable in the programmes run by governing bodies. For
example: B.Pharm.

2) Rounding off marks for calculating the aggregate marks in not allowed.

3) Waiver for English as a compulsory Subject: In case applicant has not studied English as a subject then
condition of English may be waived off for eligibility as well as Scholarship, provided the applicant in his
qualifying exam has studied in English Medium or he has done IELTS / TOEFL or equivalent.
Certificate from Head of the Institution / School must be provided in this case.
4) More than One Board: If a student has passed the 10+2 from one board and has passed one additional subject
(subject considered compulsory for taking admission in LPU) from some other Board, then for calculating
percentage of aggregate marks all the subjects (both the boards) will be considered for Eligibility as well as
Scholarship.
Illustration:
Suppose the student has obtained 300 marks out of 500 marks in CBSE Board and cleared Math from National
Open School and scored 40 marks out of 100. If such a student is seeking admission in a Programme where
Math is compulsory then aggregate percentage will be calculated by considering 340 out of 600 i.e. 56.66%.
5) Higher Qualification: If a student does not have sufficient marks in qualifying examination as a whole or in a
specific course, but student has done some higher qualification in the relevant discipline, then marks in higher
qualification (as a whole or for specific course) may be considered for calculating eligibility of the student.
Higher qualification is considered for Eligibility only but not for Scholarship.

Illustration-I: A student has done B.A and scored only 57% marks and thus not eligible for MBA. If the student
has also done PGDCA or B. Ed etc. and scored more than 60% then student is considered eligible for MBA.

Illustration-II: A student has done B.A and scored 65% marks and he has not taken
Mathematics/Statistics/Business Math/Business Statistics /QT as one of the subject either at Graduation or at
10+2 level and thus he will not be considered eligible for MCA. But if the student has also done PGDCA then
student is considered eligible for MCA first year because he has done higher qualification of computer oriented
courses.

6) The eligibility Criteria as specified in Part-B details the percentage required in qualifying examination. However
in case the issuing Board / University does not award marks / percentages and instead award Grades or Grade
Point Averages, then the following criteria shall be used to determine the eligibility and / or Scholarship, unless
otherwise prescribed by the University.
a) If the concerned Board / University have awarded Grade Point Average for the programme as a whole,
then it is the responsibility of the applicant to get, from the previous Board/ University, the conversion
factor for converting Grade Point Averages, to percentage for verifying his / her eligibility criteria. In case
no such conversion factor is defined by previous Board/ University/ Institute, then conversion factor as per
following shall be used for determining applicant's eligibility, unless otherwise prescribed by the University.
Conversion Factor for Grade Point Averages on 10 point Scale will be 9, Conversion Factor for Grade Point
Averages on 4 point scale will be 22.5 and similarly for other conversion factor of grades of different
scales.
b) If the concerned Board / University has awarded grades for individual courses/ subjects and not for the
Programme as a whole, and has also provided the specific marks (or range of marks) corresponding to a
grade, then corresponding marks (or mid value of range) shall be used to calculate equivalent percentage.
In case of any ambiguity, please contact Verification Team
c) If the concerned Board / University has awarded grades for individual courses/ subjects and not for the
Programme as a whole, and has not provided the specific marks (or range of marks) corresponding to a
grade, then the following mechanism shall be considered to calculate marks corresponding to a grade and
in turn equivalent percentage :
The marks assigned to a grade will depend on total number of grades being awarded by the concerned
Institute/ University. Top most passing grade will be considered equivalent to 90 percent marks and lowest
passing grade will be considered equivalent to 50 percent marks. For all other grades, the equivalent marks
will be assigned in such a way that difference between adjoining grades is always same.
Example: If an institute awards 6 grades A+, A, B, C, D and E. Grades from A+ to D are pass grade with A+ as
the highest grade and E is the fail grade. In this scenario, A+ will be considered equivalent to 90% marks and
D (lowest pass grade) will be considered equivalent to 50% marks. The remaining 3 grades i.e. A, B and C will
be equivalent to 80%, 70% and 60% respectively.
d) It may happen that concerned board has awarded grades/marks for individual courses/subjects and has also
provided overall marks in total and overall/cumulative GPA on the transcript.
So in such cases, admission officer is required to calculate 2 different percentages and best of 2 percentages
will be awarded to student for eligibility as well as scholarship. Admission officer has to ensure that any
calculated percentage must include the mandatory subjects as per eligibility of programme.
Example-I: Let us assume that student has received the following details on his transcript with 5 courses:-

Sr. No. Subjects GRADE GRADE

POINT
1 English A1 10
2 Physics B1 08
3 Mathematics B1 08
4 Biology A2 09
5 History A2 09
CGPA A2 8.80 Marks
409/500
The calculation of percentage must be done as under:
a. The percentage of marks obtained by the student is 81.8% (409/500*100)
b. The percentage of marks obtained by the student is 79.2% (8.80*9)
(On Grade Point scale of 9)
So highest percentage from point a and b will be awarded to student i.e. 81.8%. In case student has
taken more than 5 courses in his qualifying examination then grades/marks of best 5 will be considered in
such a way that it must include all the mandatory subjects as specified in eligibility of programme. Overall
CGPA as well as total marks will not be considered for percentage calculation in such cases.
