viii) What is the significance of the complex dielectric constant.

Q5. a) Derive the expression for magnetic susceptibility of a paramagnet using quantum theory. In

b) Distinguish between a paramagnet, ferromagnet and a diamagnet. Draw the B-H hysteresis loops

Q6. a) Show that electronic polarizability is a complex quantity and obtain the expression for the
dielectric constant of the same. Show that for low frequencies, it is a constant. (10)

b) What makes the electric field at the atomic site different from the externally applied field? (5)

Q7. a) Explain Type I and type II superconductors with the help of a diagram. (5)

b) Explain the formation of energy bands using the Kronig-Penney Model for an electron in 1D
periodic potential. How many energy states are there in a given allowed energy band? (10)
