1. The most Popular Language
People who speak English fall into one
of three groups:

 Those who have learnt it as their native language.

 Those who have learnt it as a second language in a society which
is mainly bilingual.
 Those who are force to use it for a practical purpose –
professional or educational.
Facts about English:
 It is only in the course of the last hundred years that English is
become a world language. In Shakespeare's time it was a
provincial language of secondary importance with only 6 million
native speakers.
 Nowadays English has become the world's most important
language in politics, science, research and internet.
 It is spoken as a native language by around 377 million and as a
second language by around 978 million speakers in the world.
The number of second-language speakers exceeded then the
number of native speakers.
2. It’s International Language
3. It’s the language of the Internet
 The domination of the English language globally is undeniable.
English is the language of diplomacy and international
communications, business, tourism, education, science, computer
technology, media and Internet. Because English was used to
develop communication, technology, programming, software,
etc., it dominates the web. 70% of all information stored
electronically is in English.
4. It’s the language of international
business

Why is Technical Writing Important?
 Once students are employed, will they have to write on the job?
The answer is a resounding YES!

 One reason for learning technical writing is to know the types of

documents engineers write on the job

 Unclear writing costs American businesses real money—over one

billion dollars a year, according to one estimate.

meltdown was partly attributed to poorly written procedures?”
Purpose of Technical Writing

engineering, or other technical information

 Assist a person with understanding more about a particular item, such as a
computer or a new drug or a new piece of technology.
 Explain how an object works or how to complete a project.
