COUNTING ON A FORMULA

The numbers below are arranged according to a particular formula:

11

21

1211

111221

312211

Can you figure out the formula? What is the next term in the sequence?

ANSWER:

I just used intuition in this problem since the sequence is pretty obvious. First term is ”one”, that won’t
give you anything but when you see the third term, you can deduct that it’s like reading out the quantity
of a grouped number in the previous number.

The 1st term is 1. The 2nd term is reading the first number as "one 1", that gives you 11. Next term is
reading the second number as "two 1s", that gives you 21. Next term is reading out the 3rd number as
"one 2" (1 2) and "one 1"(1 1), that gives you 1211. This goes on until you get 13112221.

The next term in the given sequence is 13112221.
