As of July, the DENR regional office in Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon) said it had issued 80 show-cause orders and 43 cease-
and-desist orders against those illegally occupying parts of the watershed, including operators of piggeries, resorts, camps and retreat centers.

Owners of private houses, including those constructed along river easements, were also served with cease-and-desist orders.

DENR Calabarzon Executive Director Nilo Tamoria warned against the construction and establishment of structures that were not covered by the
necessary permits under the National Integrated Protected Areas System and the amending law that expanded its coverage.

Violators may face fines of up to P5 million on top of jail time of up to 12 years.

With a total land area of over 26,000 hectares, the Upper Marikina watershed was declared a protected landscape in November 2011 under Presidential
Proclamation No. 296.

But by then, there were already illegal structures within the area. Quarrying and logging companies were also reported to be operating inside the
watershed, leading to massive deforestation and environmental destruction.

On July 24, two forest rangers working in a reforestation site of the Masungi Georeserve Foundation were shot by still unidentified assailants. Although
both survived, the incident prompted environmentalists to clamor for more security for forest workers within the Upper Marikina watershed.

The DENR Calabarzon said it was already working with the Philippine National Police and Philippine Army to identify the suspects and strengthen
monitoring and patrolling activities in the area.

❑it is written in the past tense
because you are reporting on
something that has already happened.
❑it should be in the third person because
you are writing about somebody else.

MAGUINDANAO REPORTS TWO DELTA VARIANT CASES
COTABATO CITY – Health officials in Maguindanao confirmed on Wednesday two
cases of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) Delta variant have been monitored
in the province but denied the existence of local transmission.
In an interview, Dr. Elizabeth Samama, provincial health officer, was quick to allay
the fear of the public on local transmission since the two patients have fully
recovered and indicated no signs that they have infected family members or
anybody.
She said the two patients were Oversees Filipino Workers (OFWs) who have
returned home more than a month ago to the municipalities of Datu Paglas and Datu
Blah Sinsuat.
“We have conducted massive contact tracing and we found no indications that the
two OFWs served as spreaders, we have no proof to that so far,” Samama said.
To date, IPHO Maguindanao has already vaccinated more than 109,000 of its 1.3
million population. Currently, the province has 296 Covid-19 active cases. The death
toll from the virus stands at 110.

OVER 100K RESIDENTS NOW FULLY VACCINATED IN ILOCOS NORTE

LAOAG CITY – Over 100,000 residents in the province of Ilocos Norte are now fully vaccinated against
the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).
Dr. Josephine Ruedas, provincial health officer, confirmed this on Friday as she reported a total of
101,830 individuals who have received their jabs including the single-dose Janssen vaccine.
“This consists 23 percent of the target eligible population as we hope to vaccinate 70 percent of our total
population before the yearend,” said Ruedas.
As more vaccines are being dispatched to the province, the Provincial Health Office (PHO), in cooperation
with local government units, continues to roll out mass vaccination drives prioritizing senior citizens,
persons with comorbidities, as well as land-based and sea-based overseas Filipino workers.

In view of the decreasing number of infections being recorded daily, Ilocos Norte with a total of 1,347
active cases as of September 23, is now back to a more relaxed general community quarantine (GCQ) until
end of this month.
Overall, the province has logged a total of 17,706 cases with 15,992 recoveries and 367 deaths.
