6 Check & Compensation General Concept
General Leica Geosystems products are manufactured, assembled and adjusted to
the best possible quality. Quick temperature changes, frequent move-
ment of the product, shock or stress can cause deviations and a decrease
of the measurement accuracy.
It is therefore recommended to check the product in regular intervals.
This can be done on-site by running through specific check or compensa-
tion measurements. If checks do not provide satisfying results repeatedly,
a compensation of the product is recommended.
This chapter contains general information about the user guidance of
check and compensation wizards.

6.1 Check and Compensation wizards

General This chapter contains general information about the wizards for checks
and compensations.

 Before a check or compensation wizard can be started the system needs

to be initialized.
Refer to “Initialization” on page 79 for details on the initialization proce-
dure.

Process All wizards consist of a 2-step process:

• Measurement process
• Report process
Therefore all wizard pages share the same layout. On the first page of the
wizard all measurements are taken, whereas on the second page the
measurement results can be analyzed and printed or archived as required.

Sketches Dynamic sketches will guide the user through the process. The sketches
contain a top view and a side view to the measurement scene guiding the
user to the position when required. The current position of the locked
target and the target positions for the measurement will be updated
dynamically through the whole measurement process. The current beam
direction is represented by a colored line which reflects the current state
shown in the DRO window.

ation tolerance exceeded.

Lucent dot with black contour: Measurement of target posi-

tion is available in measurement table.

U95 (Expanded uncertainty k=2) exceeded.

 A high U95 value is indicating unstable measurement

conditions. It is for user purposes and does not have influ-
ence on the acceptance criteria of check and compensation
procedures.

 For sensor checks and compensations the U95 value is

pre-set and invariant. A field check has an U95 value
expanded by the selected tolerance extension value.
Red marked measurement table entry:
Tolerance of 3D deviation or 6D tolerance exceeded. The
acceptance criteria for a check or compensation will not be
achieved.

Concept
 The nominal position of the target is represented by a grey dot. The size
of the dot is generalized and does equal with the size of the tolerance
zone of the nominal position. The nominal position is kept when the DRO
guidance remains green and does not change to red or blue.

Tool Tips Dynamic tool tips provide additional information on the nominal position
when required, measurements and accuracy information related to the
measurements.

Acceptance Criteria A check and compensation has one or several acceptance criteria that
need to be fulfilled to complete the corresponding procedure success-
fully. The acceptance criteria for sensor checks and compensations are
fixed and only for field checks can be adjusted by changing the tolerance
level.
The following acceptance criteria information is available:

Symbol Description
Acceptance criteria is fulfilled.

Acceptance criteria is not fulfilled.

U95 The Expanded Uncertainty U95 (k=2) value describes the confidence level
of 95% (k=2). This means when measuring the same position a hundred
times, ninety-five measurement will be below the displayed U95 value. In
the remaining five cases the U95 will be exceeded.
An increased U95 value due to variance is expected when measuring under
unstable conditions (air turbulence, vibrations etc.).
To have highest possible confidence in executed measurement a low U95
is desired.

Check & Compensation General Absolute Tracker AT40x 109

Concept
3D Deviation The 3D deviation describes the spatial divergence between an actual and
corresponding nominal position.
For each 3D deviation a tolerance is set and reported to the user when
exceeded.
For highest possible accuracy 3D deviations maintaining the tolerance
level according the specific check and compensation procedure are
desired.
Refer to “Tolerances” on page 77 for details on tolerance level.

Absolute Tracker The following controls are available in all wizards to display settings or
Status Bar measurement parameters. The settings cannot be changed inside the
wizard:

Concept
7 Field Check
General The Leica Geosystems Absolute Trackers are manufactured, assembled
and adjusted to the best possible quality.
The achievable accuracy under given working conditions depends not
exclusively on the Absolute Tracker system performance.
The following external influences need to be considered as well:

Factor Example
Environmental conditions • floor stability
• target stability
• temperature gradient
• etc.
Hardware accessories • target quality
• tripod stability
• use of external temperature sensor
• etc.
Measurement process • user settings
• operator experience
• etc.

A field check enables the user to check the achievable accuracy consid-
ering current conditions as well as external influences with user-specific
settings of a preferred workflow.
A field check is therefore an overall check. To check only the Absolute
Tracker system performance a sensor check is required.
Refer to “Sensor Check” on page 132 for details on checking the Absolute
Tracker.

Application In the following cases a field check should be performed:

• Before the first use of the product
• Before any measurement job that requires high precision
• After long transportations
• After long working periods

7.1 Two Face Check

General The Two Face Check routine verifies the system geometry (horizontal and
vertical collimation). Large ambient temperature changes may result in
significant Two Face Check deviations.

 A Two Face Check can only be performed with a reflector selected.

Check Procedure Two Face measurements consist of the following 1-step process:
• Measurement of a free setup of multiple points, at least one, ideally
equal distributed, covering the intended measurement volume in the
intended working volume.

Recommended The Two Face Check allows to test the performance of the Absolute
Setup Tracker in respect to individual expectations on an application under real-
world conditions and desired settings. As a consequence the Two Face
Check setup is free and can be chosen individually.

8 Sensor Check
General The Leica Geosystems Absolute Trackers are manufactured, assembled
and adjusted to the best possible quality.
Quick temperature changes, frequent movement of the product, shock or
stress can cause deviations and a decrease of the measurement accuracy.
During the manufacturing process the product parameters are carefully
determined.
A sensor check allows to test if the manufactures specifications are
complied with the current active Absolute Tracker parameter.
A sensor check is a guided process and required system settings are pre-
set.

Application A sensor check should be performed when a field check is reported as

“Not OK” although the external influences decreasing the measurement
precision are minimized.
Refer to “General” on page 115 for details on factors decreasing the
Absolute Tracker performance.

 Before starting to work the product has to become warmed up and accli-
matized to the ambient temperature, especially if the product has been
stored under different temperature conditions. Ensure sufficient acclima-
tization to the environment before taking precision measurements.

8.1 ADM Check
General The ADM sensor check verifies the distance measurement performance of
the system and determines if an ADM Compensation will be necessary.

Check Procedure
ADM Check must be performed with Leica 1.5" RRR reflector.
ADM Check measurements consist of the following 3-step process:
1. Measurement of two fixed points, at the height of tilting axis of the
Absolute Tracker AT40x from the middle of the two points.
2. Measurement of the same two fixed points, at the height of tilting
axis of the Absolute Tracker AT40x from the outside of the two
points.
3. Measurement of the same two fixed points, at the height of tilting
axis of the Absolute Tracker AT40x from the middle of the two points
as in step 1.

 Move the sensor between step 1 to 3. Do not move the reflector posi-
tions.

Space Requirement The required room space for the ADM Check is 6 meter. Minimum room
height is 2 meter.

134 Absolute Tracker AT40x Sensor Check

 The recommended setup of an ADM Check requires the usage of three
tripods. As an alternative the Absolute Tracker can be placed directly on
the ground floor sitting in the tribrach. The reflector positions need to be
approximately at the same height as the transit axis of the Absolute
Tracker. The reflector positions are not allowed to move during the proce-
dure. This is assured by using fixed reflector holders mounted on the
ground or a wall. The conditions of a correct setup are identical with the
original recommended setup. Keep in mind that the angle criteria of ± 5°
can not be kept when measuring points on the wall.

8.3 Probe Check

General The Probe Check verifies the 6Dof measurement performance of the
Absolute Tracker and B-Probe and determines if the B-Probe body or the
camera needs to be compensated.

 Probe Check must be performed with a B-Probe target selected.

 The Absolute Tracker must have been initialized at least in the last hour.

Check Procedure Probe Check measurements consist of the following 1-step process:
1. Measurement of two fixed points, at the height of tilting axis of the
Absolute Tracker AT402 at a given distance.

 Measurements are to be done in the compensation tool. No hand held

measurements.

Space Requirement The required room space for the Probe Check is 6 meter. Minimum room
height is 2 meter.

Recommended The recommended setup for the Probe Check is shown below:
Setup

Sensor Check Absolute Tracker AT40x 147

Point ID Vertical Distance [m]
Angle [m]
1 90 2.75
2 90 5.25

 The recommended setup of a Probe Check requires the usage of two

tripods. As an alternative the Absolute Tracker can be placed directly on
the ground floor sitting in the tribrach. The B-Probe positions need to be
approximately at the same height as the transit axis of the Absolute
Tracker. Those B-Probe positions on the ground at Absolute Tracker
transit axis height can be performed by placing the B-Probe sitting in the
compensation tool on the ground.

 Additional measurements can be added to the setup.

The PDF Report will be generated.

The Tracker Pilot navigates to the sensor
check page.

 Refer to “Report Location” on

page 112 for details on the report loca-
tion.

Measurements All measurements taken are listed in the Measurements table on the
Table bottom half of the screen for each station.

The Image RMS compares the actual position of the B-Probes’ LEDs in
relation to the centre of the reflector on the B-Probe and the compensa-
tion file of the B-Probe.
Image RMS values out of tolerance can be caused by to three possible
error sources:
• Imaging sensor produces a distorted image and needs to be re-
compensated.
• Wrong B-Probe selected.

Sensor Check Absolute Tracker AT40x 149

• The B-Probe LEDs body is damaged and needs to be re-compensated.

Acceptance Criteria The following report statements are possible:

Symbol Description
The Image RMS values of all measured B-Probe positions
maintain the tolerance extension value according the manu-
factures specification.
The Image RMS value of at least one measured B-Probe
position exceeds the tolerance extension value according
the manufactures specification.

 In case the Probe Check fails, it is recommended to perform the check

again. If the Probe Check fails again, a further analysis of the Image RMS
values is recommended.
There are two possible error sources causing Image RMS values to be out
of tolerance:
• If all of the RMS values of the near and far measurements are out of
tolerance and roughly show the same values then the imaging sensor
is de-calibrated and the camera needs to be re-compensated.
However this is very unlikely as the camera compensation is not
expected to change.

 The camera compensation cannot be done by the user. The Absolute

Tracker AT40x must be sent to a Leica service centre.
• If some of the RMS values of the near and far measurements are out
of tolerance but show different values then the B-Probe body needs
to be re-compensated.

 The B-Probe compensation cannot be done by the user. The B-Probe

must be sent to a Leica service centre.

9 Compensation
General Leica Geosystems products are manufactured, assembled and adjusted to
the best possible quality. During the manufacturing process the product
parameters are carefully determined.
Quick temperature changes, frequent movement of the product, shock or
stress can cause deviations an decrease of the measurement accuracy.

Application If sensor check does not provide satisfying results repeatedly, a compen-
sation of the product is recommended.
A compensation allows to refresh and adjust Absolute Tracker parameter
changes.

 Before starting to work the product has to become warmed up and accli-
matized to the ambient temperature, especially if the product has been
stored under different temperature conditions. Ensure sufficient acclima-
tization to the environment before taking precision measurements. To
achieve the highest possible accuracy level a warm up time of two hours
is strongly recommended before starting a compensation or a high preci-
sion measurement job.

 The systems needs to be initialized before a compensation wizard can be

started.

 The usage of a Leica 1.5" RRR is required.

Best Practice To achieve the highest possible accuracy, the following steps are recom-
mended:
• Set up the Absolute Tracker on a stable ground and level it accurately.
• Environmental parameters should remain constant during the
compensation.
• The Absolute Tracker needs to be warmed up for  2 hours before
starting the compensation. A pop-up message will be displayed once
the system is warmed up.
• A Leica RRR 1.5’’ reflector is required for compensations.
• The reflector should be clean and undamaged.
• The ideal reflector position for the initialization should be at  8m
from the sensor.

9.1.1 Angle Compensation

General The Angle Compensation routine verifies the system geometry (horizontal
and vertical collimation). Large ambient temperature changes may require
to perform an Angle Compensation.

Compensation Angle Compensation measurements consist of the following 3-step

Procedure process:
1. Inclination Measurement.
2. Measurement of two points at a steep angle at a given distance,
ideally points at floor level.
3. Measurement of four points at a given distance, ideally on a line, at
the height of tilting axis of the Absolute Tracker AT40x.

Space Requirement The required room space for the Angle Check is 5 meter. Minimum room
height is 2 meter.

Required Setup The Angle Compensation can be performed by two independent setups
according to the initial reflector position in relation to the Absolute
Tracker AT40x tilting axis.
The required setup for the Angle Compensation is shown for a reflector
position below tilting axis:

Point ID Vertical Angle [deg] Distance [m]

1 ~ 134 2.2
2 ~ 122 2.9
3 ~ 110 4.5
4 ~ 90 2.2
5 ~ 90 2.9
6 ~ 90 4.5

2 ~ 122 2.9
3 ~ 110 4.5
4 ~ 90 2.2
5 ~ 90 2.9
6 ~ 90 4.5

 Flip between the above two setups by moving the reflector along the
stand axis of the Absolute Tracker AT40x up or down.

 The measurements should be taken in sequential order and close to the

specified point locations.

 Additional measurements can be added to one setup.

 The recommended setup of an Angle Compensation requires the usage of

two tripods. As an alternative the Absolute Tracker can be placed directly
on the ground floor sitting in the tribrach. In this case follow the user
guidance of the second described setup for reflector positions above
tilting axis.
Those reflector positions on Absolute Tracker transit axis height can be
performed by placing the reflector on the ground sitting in a reflector
holder. The reflector positions above Absolute Tracker should be
performed with a reflector mounted on a tripod.

Procedure process:
1. Measurement of two fixed points, at the height of tilting axis of the
Absolute Tracker AT40x from the middle of the two points.
2. Measurement of the same two fixed points, at the height of tilting
axis of the Absolute Tracker AT40x from the outside of the two
points.

9.1.3 ADM Offset Compensation For Custom Reflector

General All glass prism reflectors cause a refraction of the laser beam in the glass
body. This results in a lag of the path of the laser beam. The ADM Offset
Compensation for Custom Reflectors routine verifies this additional path
of the ADM beam.

Compensation ADM Offset Compensation measurements consist of the following 2-step

Procedure process:
1. Measurement of two fixed points, at the height of tilting axis of the
Absolute Tracker AT40x from the middle of the two points.
2. Measurement of the same two fixed points, at the height of tilting
