CRITIQUE PAPER

I chose number 1 picture to critique in this paper. In this picture in shows that the student is
sleeping while doing his seatwork or homework. I think he is too exhausted and sleepy so that the
picture shows that he is already sleeping or fell asleep while doing his tasks.
For me, this is the challenge that some of the students are facing right now. Not getting
enough sleep just to finish some task, or maybe reviewing notes because of the test that they
might take. Most students do not get sufficient sleep now. There are lot of work and performance
they need to do, they always sleep late or sometimes they will stay awake all night just to finish
what they need to finish. Most of us know that we need 7-8 hours of sleep per night, but it is
especially important for student. Getting quality sleep will improve students mental, emotional, and
physical performance. It improves their immune system, balance hormones, boost metabolism, and
improves brain function. And also, one of the reason that the student take enough sleep is that
while sleeping, our brain is “cleaning”’ itself. During sleep, our body uses this time to remove all
that waste and allows us to repeat the learning processes day after day. It is like removing all the
unneeded files from your computer, so you have storage for more important files. But how can the
student “clean” his brain when they always stay awake all night and do what they need to do.
Some teachers giving so many task to student and they want it to pass as soon as possible. So the
tendency is that the student will do it overnight so that they will pass it on time and they will not
have a falling grades. Most students probably know that depriving themselves from sleep is bad,
but they are willing to sacrifice sleep and as a consequence telling themselves it is just for a short
time and they can soon start to sleep 12 hours a day once a semester is done. But besides pulling
all-nighters, many students generally don’t know what it means to have a good sleeping routine.
Due to class schedules that differ the on the daily basis, part time jobs, extra-curricular and social
activities, students adapt to irregular sleep cycle that can seriously impact their academic
performance as well as mental health and physical health. They tend to “make up” for the lack of
sleep by laying on bed weekends of in their day off, but this just makes the irregular cycle even
worse. So as a teacher, if you know that your student is not getting enough sleep just to do the task
that you give, please give them some break. You know it will be good for them. They will
appreciate it. But in some other instances, the students also stay up all night doing unnecessary
things. Browsing online, updating in Instagram or Facebook, watching videos online.
I suggest that try to get to bed and wake up at the same time to avoid messing up your
body’s internal clock. Avoid sleeping during the day to make up for lack of sleep at night, since this
means less exposure to natural light which is important for good sleep. Taking enough sleep can
help you to sharpen your brain, boost your mood, and help you to have a healthier heart. So
sleeping in enough time is a good start.
