The most common concern of the thousands of seafarers I coach is, “Can I really
succeed in business? Is there really a chance for me, being introverted and having no
knowledge in business, can I really transition to becoming an entrepreneur?”

My friend, let me tell you that you have what it takes. Skills are secondary in business, it
can be learned, but developing a strong mindset when it comes to learning and skill
acquisition is the most important. No matter where you come from, if you are introverted
just like me, you have a chance. I am an introvert winning on an extrovert's game, and I
have developed the skills in coaching and public speaking (which was absolutely
terrifying for me at first). I earned my first million in business when I was 25 years old.
My rank was 2nd mate by then. I decided to stop sailing at that age, way earlier than the
usual retirement age.

Let me show you the blueprint on how to successfully transition from seafarer to land-
based entrepreneur. In this short e-book, I will give you the secrets on how you can use
seafaring as a powerful tool for wealth creation. I will show you what kind of approach I
took that made me a millionaire in the early age of 25. This is the blueprint for victory!
My so-called LIFE HACK in my venture towards business success using the best tool,
seafaring.

Let me introduce you, to the M.A.P blueprint. This is the secret to all my success in
business. Even as early as cadetship these are the core principles that I followed that
led me to my success and early transition from seafaring, to multimillionaire on land. Let
me tell you that I did not come from a rich family, as many people would argue “Maybe
you were rich before? Maybe you got lucky?”

Page | 4
If we were rich before then I wouldn’t be a seafarer, I would most probably be a doctor
or a lawyer. In the Philippines, those who want to become successful usually go outside
of the country to work, because that’s where the money is. I became successful not
because of my background, it is because of this blueprint.

Page | 5
This blueprint took me 12 years to learn. That is the beauty of learning from books, you
get the experience of another person, condensed lifelong learnings in a small package,
available for your consumption for less than 20$. You could learn this principle in 30
minutes, which took me 12 years to discover. I have attended thousands of seminars,
read countless books and attended dozens of courses to fast track my learnings. So
that I would learn from other people's mistakes and avoid the trial and error process.
Imagine going onboard and approaching learning via trial and error. That is a very
dangerous tactic. One error could cost us our life!

I remember when I was a cadet, I would usually bring a book with me on the gangway, if
it was not busy, I would utilize the time reading books. (plus, it helps me stay awake)
I’ve learned from many business mentors, and my results were staggering. I originally
intended to retire from sailing and be stable on land by 35, because of learning I was
able to do it much earlier.

Let me discuss each of the parts of this blueprint, and after learning this and putting this
to use, I can say that you can be stable on land in the next 5 years! Read carefully and
take down notes!

Page | 6
M- Mindset Development

The first step of creating success on land is developing the mindset of an entrepreneur.
A strong wind could knock down a building with a poor foundation. The journey to
entrepreneurial success will be a hard one, it will be full of challenges and the right
foundation for building a business and managing resources is the key.

Let me give you an example.

I remember my mentor who asked me “what is the plan? How do you see yourself in 20
years?” I was just beginning my seafaring career by then, and I told him “ I plan on
gathering capital, saving some money, put up a business eventually and stay here on
land.”

He looked at me smiling, “Okay. Good! A standard plan for many seafarers. Let me ask
you then if you plan on starting a business, can you write down all the skills you need to
learn to start and successfully run a business? Can you rank yourself from 1- 10 on all
business skills? Also, please write down seafaring on the bottom of the list.”

Page | 7
He looked at what I wrote and told me, “Mix, all of these skills you rank yourself a score
of 1. In seafaring, you put an 8. Remember that if you plan on making money through
business, then you should develop the mindset of learning these skills. You should be
open to all types of learning, because how can you rely on these skills to make money if
your score is a 1 out of 10? And if you can’t make money out of these skills, what skill
will you rely on when you need money?”

I said, “Seafaring.”

Page | 8
“That’s it. If the only thing you know is seafaring, and it’s the only skill you can rely on in
making money, then you will be seafaring forever.”

Up to when do we need money? FOREVER. If the only skill you know is seafaring, (and
the only skill you can rely on in making money) then up to when will you sail?

................................................FOREVER ...........................................

It is at this moment that I have adapted the right mindset when it comes to learning and
acquiring skills. As I went along in my career as a seafarer, I decided to also start
learning and utilizing my spare time in studying business and the skills required to run it.
All my decisions, even when I got the 6.09 in order to teach, came from that idea of skill
acquisition. All my decisions came from one change of belief. I got this from the
mentoring session I invested 36,000 PHP in. (roughly 700$)

You see, when a certain idea turns into a belief, then you can rewire your brain and
eventually take steps towards success. With a change in belief, all your decisions will be
affected. All your actions will change. If you want to be rich, then you should adopt the
right set of beliefs and how the mind works (mindset), pattern it to the rich people.

Developing the mindset of the rich is very important. I wrote in my book SIGN OFF that
you can actually transition to business in the next 5 years if you look at your vacations
differently. I am a second mate, and every second mate around the world most probably
are doing the same things. There might be minor differences, but most of us now are
probably correcting the charts, doing some LSA maintenance and doing our routine
bridge watch.

Page | 9
Then why is my result different from all of the second mates around the world? If we are
doing the same things, shouldn’t we all have the same results? Why was my result
drastically different than everyone else’s? It’s because I utilized my free time, my
vacations VERY WELL.

I had a different mindset when it comes to vacation time. It was the only time I could be
different. It is the only time I can practice a new skill. I realized that the most important
battle, at least in utilizing seafaring as a tool to develop long-lasting wealth, is when I
was on land. It is not what I do onboard. It is what I learn when I am here in my home
country, the Philippines.

It is then that I started saying NO to every “hey let’s rest first.” “Hey let’s go to Boracay.
Hey, let’s party after work. You worked so hard on board, let’s take a rest first. Let’s fly
out of the country for a vacation!”

I said no to every invite, thinking that I had to utilize the time for learning. If my
businesses and my skill level were high enough, I can do all of these things. If I had 10
apartment buildings, I can go out of the country every week. There is a time for all of
these things. I always said, “call me back after 5 years.”

I was so focused on learning and trying to be different than everyone, as I have also
adopted the mindset that if I do things differently, I could have a different result!

Page | 10
This is a perfect example of a shift in mindset. Mindset is the key factor in many of our
actions and decisions. Our actions are decided by our beliefs, habits, and mindset.
Training your mind and acquiring the best set of beliefs is VERY CRUCIAL in
succeeding. If you believed that “I can’t get rich, because it is just not meant to be for
me.” If that is the way a person thinks, do you think he can succeed in business?
Impossible.

The first step in realizing a dream is to first “dream it”. In fact, that is the easiest step
because there is still no work required. All of these happens in the mind. Now if a
person cannot grasp the idea that he will be successful in business and stay land-
based, or he will get the Lamborghini, the Ferrari, then all hope of actually getting the
dream is lost. If from the first step, a person cannot dream, if the mind cannot accept
that it is a possible reality for you, then the mind will not find a way towards your goal.

That is why developing your mindset is the first step. In my book SIGN OFF! I revealed
all the secrets and carefully examined all my sets of beliefs when it comes to money,
seafaring and the core principles (I call them the 23 principles) in amassing wealth in
our career that helped me retire, become a millionaire at the age of 25. These sets of
beliefs literally made me millions of pesos in revenue, and so did many of the people I
coached.

I remember a friend of mine who wanted to learn about business. He asked me what
he should do when he starts, he was waiting for techniques. The right approach, but
then when I started talking about philosophy he got confused. He told me

“Suddenly you became a philosopher. What’s up with that? I thought we were talking
about business? I told him “Give a man a knife and he might use it well for cooking, but

Page | 11
he can also use if for stabbing.” Before you teach him how to use the knife, teach him
first where to use the knife. It must be used for food, not for people.

Mindset is the core foundation of wealth. A person who fails in this area of business
would usually lose the business immediately. That is why I keep saying that more
money is not the solution to money problems. It’s the correction or the betterment of the
use of money. Even if you have an increase in salary, a person with poor decision
making and no vision of the future will waste the money as soon as he gets it.

Of all the courses I paid for, and all the seminars I have attended, 50% of those were for
building a strong foundation of the mind. I have invested heavily in my thought
processes, and that is the reason why I did not give up so easily. Why I don’t need other
people motivating me. That’s the reason why when the opportunity to spend money
ashore or on board, I was able to train my brain to refuse these temptations. It’s
because of the right mindset that I have built all throughout those years.

I actually specialize in mindset duplication. One of our courses offer this and it might be
of help to you in the future.

Page | 12
A- Acquire Skills

80% of your success will come from the mindset. When it comes to skill acquisition, you
need to have that willingness to learn. 20% of your success will come from the skills you
develop. Now, there are a few skills that are MASSIVELY beneficial in becoming rich in
business, we will talk about them later.

Skill acquisition usually is the first roadblock in succeeding in business.

I remember my first time on board, I knew I did ok in my academics, how come it’s as if I
didn’t know anything? Everything was so hard for me. Especially mooring operations, I
heard from one of the training centers that I had to be extra careful in dealing with
mooring lines. If it snapped, it would kill me. I always panicked during mooring
operation; I had a low skill level. I always got scolded, I usually ended up on the sideline
just observing the AB’s and OS’s doing their thing. On the first week I got frustrated, I
told myself “I was doing my best. How come I can’t figure it out?”

Page | 13
The issue here is not that I was not capable of learning it. It is just that I have only spent
1 WEEK onboard, even if I did my best, it takes a couple more mooring operations,
more practice in order for me to understand the process and learn the skill. I was
capable, it’s just that the time I was actually doing it is, well, 1 week. It’s just not enough.

Many seafarers try venturing on entrepreneurship and figure out that it is hard. They are
doing their best, but how come they are not getting their desired results? It is because
they are still new in the business world. They are still LEARNING the skill. It takes
10,000 hours to be an expert on a skill you are trying to learn, and expecting amazing
results just after a few hours of experience, is to me, crazy.

When you start a business, think of skill acquisition first. I started my first business at 18
years old. A jeepney business (a kind of transportation vehicle in the Philippines) which
I knew nothing about. Everyone would ask me “what do you know about that? Do you
know what to do next? What about maintenance?”

They knew I did not have any experience, so why try it?

Remember that you don’t need to be great to start, you need to start to be great. I
started that business not because I wanted to earn, it is because I wanted to learn. Can
you be good at basketball just by watching the NBA?

Page | 14
Michael Jordan also started with learning how to dribble. Manny Pacquaio was an
amateur of boxing once. We see these legends and look at their achievements but we
never see how they worked hard in acquiring their skills, especially during the beginning
when they knew nothing!

I remember when I first tried selling. It was a totally foreign, unknown and scary skill for
me to learn. I was an introvert. Never really sold anything in my life. I knew it was a
necessary skill for me to learn, as all businesses require a form of selling. Naturally, I
failed on my first attempts. I sucked.

Most would be discouraged and they would stop. But remember that I got the mindset of
skill acquisition, and I was focused on improving my skills as an entrepreneur. I
continued and eventually, I won. In my pharmaceutical business, which includes A LOT
of selling, I am able to earn 10,000 USD a month from that business alone. Not bad,
considering I am here on land!

In acquiring skills, one must first detach from the outcome. Never mind the results! If
you are learning how to advertise, if no one clicks on your advertisement, don’t be sad!
At least you made the ad. You learned something. There are no failures in skill
acquisition, only learning experiences.

Aside from learning from experience, the process of skill acquisition can be sped up by
the right training and mentors.

Page | 15
I had a friend who started in sales with me who was very hesitant in making investments
when it comes to learning. When there is a new seminar, I always invited him, and he
always said no. He was also a seafarer just like me, but he went into sales because that
was his forte. He was always doing it for all of his life. I for one am new to it, never had
any experience, and I was only really eager to learn (even without the initial talent or
experience).

I spent 60,000 pesos in my first year studying business (1200$). He spent nothing. I
earned 1.6 million NET on my first year (30,000 USD), he earned 100,000 PHP (2000
$). Do you think that the money I spent on learning was worth it? DEFINITELY. It pays
to know what you are doing. it pays to know from someone else. It saves you time, it
saves you money.

Remember that trial and error is expensive! If you pay for knowledge, it will cost you
money at first, but will earn you much more in the long run! Do not hesitate on making
investments for yourself, in training your mindset and establishing your core beliefs.
Most seafarers fail in business because they are willing to shell out 10,000 USD to start
a business, but they don’t want to invest 1000 USD on themselves or their spouse. We
are the ones who are handling and making the business grow!

I love steak. It’s one of my most favorite food ever. There is a steak called A5 Wagyu,
one of the most expensive cuts of beef you can buy. 1 kilo would reach up to the tens of
thousands for a quality cut. This is the type of beef perfect for special occasions like
anniversaries, birthdays etc.

My question is, if you got 1 kilo of a wagyu A5, would you let your friend cook it? What if
he never cooked steak before? He never cooked anything in his life, the last time he
cooked it was hotdog, and it got burned.

Page | 16
Would you let that person cook the steak for you?

I bet not. He would ruin the steak. Maybe burn it as well.

So why would you leave a 10,000 USD business on a person who does not know what
he is doing? Why not spend the 5,000 USD on the person and then start with a smaller
capital? In the hands of a knowledgeable person, a bad cut of beef can taste good. In
the hands of someone who doesn’t know what he is doing, an A5 wagyu will burn. It will
be inedible.

P- Polish and Adjust

A few contracts are enough to build long-lasting wealth. I remember buying my first
jeepney at 18, the reason why I was in a hurry to start a business is because of the
factor of time. I didn’t If I start as early as 18, then it would be a massive advantage for
me.

Page | 18
Consider looking at the chart above:

If I start early, then the money can multiply early. If you look at the chart, it is possible to
actually earn as much as a third mate in business in the next four years. I was in a hurry
to start a business because I knew I would be wasting time; the money could have
grown all those years. I did not go ashore, didn’t spend money, didn’t buy the laptop,
just focused on getting started. The goal was 100 units of jeep. Doing the math, it is
actually possible to do that in the next 10 years! (100 x 400 USD, 40,000 USD per
month!!!)

Is it possible to buy a taxi or jeepney for a seafarer? Definitely. It’s just 2 months’ salary
for a second mate. It’s 2 weeks for a captain. We have the resources, and it will keep
pouring until we are an active seafarer. The money will just keep coming in. So, our
chances in actually succeeding is high!

In order to raise a business from one unit to a hundred units, you must also “raise”
yourself. The income of a business usually follows the value of the owner. If you want
your business to grow, you must grow yourself. There will be skills that you need to
master, new knowledge you need to acquire and different scenarios you have to
experience. As you go through the process, you get better in what you do and
eventually you get a hundred units. You would be sitting pretty inside the house, sipping
coffee, have a manager handle the business and do basically whatever you want.

Page | 19
I hear a lot of comments on board when the ship starts to roll “5 more years and I’ll be
done. I will have enough money and I will stay land-based, managing my own
business.” Without actually taking action, there will be no progress on that plan. You
now see that it is possible to stop within the next 5 years if you choose to. Knowing the
blueprint is the key though. You can sail as long as you want, up to 65 years old and still
nothing happens, because you lack the knowledge and the mindset.

Also, the key here is reinvesting the money in the business. It’s like polishing a shoe. It
starts off in matt color, and as you wipe it using the shoe polish, it slowly becomes
shiny. The same goes for you and your business. You polish yourself, try different
approaches, adjust the course a bit to counter the winds and the waves. Better your
communication, your hiring and firing, your branding, improve yourself in order to
master your craft. You polish your business, look for areas you need to improve, get
better people, improve your system, improve your structure, and as you keep polishing
and adjusting, from just a unit in a few years can reach a hundred. Even a thousand!

To summarize, you must first train your mind. Adopt the mindset of a millionaire, and
focus on it. Your beliefs change and your actions changes. That is the power of belief. A
small change in belief can lead you to a totally different direction. We first start there.

Then we focus on acquiring skills that create wealth. There are skills that once you
learn, can earn you millions of pesos here in the Philippines. I have been working on my
skills for the decade. Honing my skills as a seafarer, but never neglecting the skills that
are necessary to be self-sufficient on land.

And last is to polish and adjust. To be the best in what you do, you must continue
searching for knowledge, continue learning and investing in yourself. Continue
practicing your skills. Give that 10,000 hours. Be better in what you do, invest in yourself
more. Allot more time in training and if you seem lost, just adjust the course and be
flexible.

Page | 20
But if you would ask me what is the BIGGEST reason why we got our results today?

I was asked this very question by a friend of mine and president of a huge manning
agency. He sat with us, in the Manila Polo Club, talking about the maritime industry and
business. And as he asked me this question, I said “It all started with the hunger to
learn. It’s all because I wanted to be better. If a person has this mindset, of continuous
improvement and hunger for growth, I believe he an eventually succeed.”

Remember that whatever your weaknesses are, if you are on the path of self-
improvement, eventually your weaknesses will correct itself. Before, I didn’t care about
exercise, until I read in a book that exercise increases your performance in business.
Since then, I always exercised, for health and for the extra edge I would get in business.
The flaw got corrected, because I was hungry for knowledge!

These three things, applied together made me 8-digit figure income since 2015.
There are still so many more things to learn to accelerate your growth in business. But
to me, these should be your priority in getting started in your transition to land based.
Be hungry for growth, improve your mindset, acquire those high paying skills, polish and
adjust and I am sure, you will be successful soon!
