CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION TO TRAINING PROGRAM

1.0 INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND OF SIWES

The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) was initiated in 1973 by the
Industrial Training Fund (ITF). This was to update practical knowledge of students in the
Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Technology. It was aimed at bridging the gap
between the theoretical knowledge acquired in classes and technical knowledge in the
industry by providing students with the opportunities to apply their educational
knowledge in real work situations.

Over the years, SIWES has contributed immensely to building the common pool of
technical and allied skills available in the Nigeria economy which are needed for the
nation’s industrial development.

Furthermore, the place and relevance of SIWES is underscored by the fact that the
scheme contributes to improving the quality of technical skills generally available in the
pool from which employers’ source technical manpower.
Its gives student the opportunity to blend the theoretical knowledge acquired in the
classroom with practical hands on application of knowledge required to perform work in
the industry. Also, it prepares students for employment and makes the transition from
school to the world of work easier after graduation.

I undertook my SIWES at Ark XTIE Edwards Nigeria Limited, Ota, Ogun state from

NOVEMBER 2019 to January 2020.

3.2PH OF WATER

pH is a measure of how acidic/basic water is. The range goes from 0 to 14, with
7 being neutral. pHs of less than 7 indicate acidity, whereas a pH of greater than
7 indicates a base. pH is really a measure of the relative amount of free
hydrogen and hydroxyl ions in the water. Water that has more free hydrogen ions
is acidic, whereas water that has more free hydroxyl ions is basic. Since pH can
be affected by chemicals in the water, pH is an important indicator of water that is
changing chemically. pH is reported in "logarithmic units". Each number
represents a 10-fold change in the acidity/basicii of the water. Water with a pH of
five is ten times more acidic than water having a pH of six.

3.3 SALINITY

Salinity Refers to the amount of dissolved salts that are

present in water sodium and chloride are the predominance
ions In the Seawater And the concentration of magnesium,
calcium and sulphate ions are also substantial .
It is also the saltiness or dissolved inorganic salt Contents of a
body of water substances dissolved in water are called
solute . The typical sea water has a salinity of 35ppt or 35%.

3.4 TOTAL DISSOLVED SOLIDS

This is the measure of dissolved combined contents of all

inorganic and organic substances present in a liquid in
molecular ionized or micro granular Suspended form. Total
dissolved solids concentrations are often reported in parts
IBEH JUMOKE ADA 17/3769
million (ppm). Water total dissolved solids concentration can
be determined using a digital meter

3.5 WATER TREATMENT

What are treatments is any process that improves the quality

of water to make it appropriate for specific use.The end use
may be drinking, industrial water supply, irrigation, River flow
maintenance, what are recreation or many other use
Including being safely returned to the environment. What are
treatment removes contaminants and undesirable
components or reduces the concentration so that the water
becomes fit for its desired end use . This treatment is crucial
do human health and allow humans to benefit from both
drinking and irrigation use.
The most commonly used chemicals for water treatment process
are:
1. Algacide
2. Chlorine
3. Chlorine dioxide
4. Mariatic acid
5. Soda ash or sodium bicarbonates

3.6 FLOW WATER TANK

Raw water Is found in the environment that has not been And does not have
any of its minerals ions, particles, bacteria, or parasite removed. Raw water
are includes iron water, groundwater, what are from infiltration well and
what are from bodies like lakes and rivers. Raw water Is generally unsafe for
human consumption due to the Presence of some contaminants. A major
health problem in some developing countries is the use of raw water for
cooking and drinking

3.7 TREATED WATER TANK

This includes some form of treated water storage to provide a
reserve for drinking water In the event of plant meant and to cater
for Fluctuations in demand, insulation Will also prevent the water
from warming up too much during the summer months.

3.8 OZONATION
Ozonation is a chemical water treatment technique based on the
infusion of ozone into water. The treatment of water with ozone has
a wide range of applications, as it is efficient for disinfection as well
As for Degradation of organic and inorganic pollutants .Ozone is a
powerful oxidizing agent which when dissolved in water, produces a
broad spectrum biocide that’s destroy all bacteria, viruses and cysts.
Ozone water treatment has been used commercially 40 treatments
of potable water since 1904.

3.9 SODUIM HYPOCHLORIDE

Sodium hypo chloride is commonly known as bleach, is most frequently used
as a disinfecting agent. It is a broad spectrum disinfectant that is effective for
the disinfection of viruses, bacteria, fungi and mycobacterium. However
sodium hypochlorite is not effective Indeed this infection of bacterial spores
and prions. It’s can also be used for water purification. It is used on a large
scale for surface purification, bleaching, odor removal and water disinfection.

3 .10 ULTRAVIOLET WATER

Ultraviolet water purification is the most effective method for
disinfecting bacteria from the water. Ultraviolet (UV) rays penetrates
harmful pathogens In your homes water undestroyed illness causing
microorganisms by attacking their genetic core (DNA).
It also exposes living organisms such as bacteria, viruses or cysts (like
cryptosporidium and giardia) to a germicidal ultraviolet wave length.
The ultraviolet light prevents bacteria from spreading disease
through drinking water.

3.11 MICROBES
Microbes are tiny Living things that are found all around us and are
too small to be seen by the naked eyes. They are in water, soil and in
the air so microbes make us sick, others are important for our
health. The most common types of microbes are bacteria, viruses,
There also microbes called protozoa
17

IBEH JUMOKE ADA 17/3769

SIWES TECHNICAL REPORT 2020

3.12 CHLORINATION
Water chlorination the process of adding chlorine or chlorine
compounds Such as sodium hypo chloride to water. This method is
used to kill bacteria, viruses and other microbes in water. In
particular, chlorine nation is used to prevent the spread of water
borne diseases such as Cholera, dysentery, and typhoid.
The different Types of chlorine disinfection are:
1. Baath disinfection
2. Simple chlorination
3. Super chlorination
4. Shock chlorination
They vary in the amount of chlorine used

3.13 BACKWASHING

In terms of water treatment, including water purification and

sewage treatment, backwashing refers to pumping water
backwards through the filters media,Sometimes including
intermittent used of compressed air during the process.
Backwashing is a form of preventive maintenance so that the
filter media can be reused.

CHAPTER 4

OBSERVATIONS AND CONTRIBUTION

4.0 OBSERVATIONS

I observed the huge gap between the school environment and a labor market, as the
labor market is a completely different game with expectations and complete
participation in the movement and the progress of the firm.

I also observed that safety was paramount and it could easy be seen as the primary goal
of every staff of the company and not only the technicians. As safety equipment and
instructions were always put in place or made available at strategic locations within the
company. workshop to the service desks to the customer care centers to the offices to
the receptions.
Neatness was also a key attribute as we were always admonished to be as neat as
possible in their dressing and in carrying out their duties. This was further encouraged
by rewarding microbiologist that could fully adhere to this

The hospitality shown to customers was of another level as customers were treated
with so much care and respect
Communication played a vital role in the successful execution of jobs, from among
personnel in a section to departments communicating with other departments present
in the company and also customers with company’s personnel. Good flow of
information was required and as a result most jobs that were returned or problematic,
come about as a result of poor communication between parties

19
SIWES TECHNICAL REPORT 2020

4.1 CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED DURING TRAINING PERIOD

1. In most cases, safety rules are not taken into consideration and
the necessary safety gadget and equipments are not usually in
place
2. It is suggested that some form of allowance should be given to
the students by the employers, as a form of encouragement and
to assist in their cost of their living, basically feeding,
transportation and accommodation especially in areas far from
the students’ neighborhood.
3. I also would want to say that more time should be given to
students for their siwes program

4.2 CONTRIBUTIONS

I contributed massively and immensely to the progress and the credibility of

the company, I also was involved with my colleagues in the laboratory by
carrying out accurate laboratory test and experiments thereby yielding job
efficiency and effectiveness in the department.

CHAPTER 5

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

5.0 CONCLUSION
My industrial attachment as a technician at XTIE EDWARDS NIGERIA LIMITED was a huge
success and a great time of knowledge and skill acquisition. Through my training I was
able to appreciate my chosen course of study even more, because I had the opportunity
to blend the theoretical knowledge acquired from school with the practical hands-on
application of knowledge gained here to perform very important tasks that contributed
in a way to my productivity in the company. My training here has given me a broader
view to the importance and relevance of my course in the immediate society and the
world at large. I have been able to reconcile the connection between my course of study
and other disciplines in producing a successful result.

5.1 RECOMMENDATION
I use this means to proffer recommendations concerning the SIWES

i. I recommend that the attachment or training period for this program or scheme should
be extended more than 3 months’ as students do not really get total involvement in the
activities of firms due to the short period of time
ii. I also recommend that there is a form of financial assistance to students because most
find it difficult to leave home to their respective firms every day and on a regular basis
and this is due to their lack of financial resource.
iii. I recommend that students are sent specifically to establishment where the stipulated
aims and objectives of SIWES would be achieved
