day
2. How did Pigafetta’s account help you understand Magellan first Voyage around

of the prominent leaders during that time, their economic activities, social and cultural
practices, and religious beliefs were identified. Moreover, local textbook writers use
his book as their source of historical information about the beginning of Christianity in
the Philippines.

Reflection

“I used to think that Ferdinand Magellan was a Spanish Explorer and was born in Spain.

, and now I think that Ferdinand Magellan is a Portuguese nobleman was born Fernão de
Magalhães around 1489. And he was sponsored by Spain to travel west across the Atlantic in
search of the East Indies, and he was the first explorer who across the facific ocean.

“One thing I learned is Magellan was considered a traitor to his home country of Portugal.
While Ferdinand Magellan was originally from Portugal, King Charles I of Spain ultimately
sponsored his voyage. This outraged the King Manuel I of Portugal, who sent operatives to
disrupt Magellan’s preparations, ordered that his family properties be vandalized and may have
made an attempt to assassinate him. Once the expedition sailed, Manuel I even ordered two
groups of Portuguese caravels to pursue Magellan’s fleet in the hopes of capturing the navigator
and returning him to his homeland in chains.

and one question I still have is did Magellan discover the Philippines?
