Introduction 4.4. Introduction ‘To safely and fully utilize the performance of the MR imaging system (hereafter called MRI system) and to use it efficiently, full preparation in installation planning is, necessary, Because the MRI system is comprised of the powerful permanent magnet, noise-sensitive electronic circuits and computer system, great attention must be paid to the power supply and grounding facilities, air conditioning facility, radio wave shielding facility, etc. It is also necessary to take consideration on the installation layout of the system ‘components so that the operator can smoothly access to the patient and easily operate the system. ‘This Installation Planning Guide describes the precautions that must be taken in installation of the MRI system. 1.2 Check points for safety 1.2.1 Controlled accoss aroa The area of which magnetic field strengths is 0.5mT or more during MR examination and the installation of the system should bo specified as a controlled access area, (In the outside area of the controlled access area, the ‘magnetic fringe field strength should not exceed 0.5m) In the outside area of the controlled access area, electromagnetic interference level should comply with TEC 60601-1-2: 2001. It is the responsibility of the user to follow local statutory requirements with respect to access to the controlled access area, Some countries enact the local statutory (labor standards) related to the people engaged in medical services who access a controlled access area. The size and shape is described as 0.5mT line in Fig. 18 of Item 17. After reading administrative instructions in Item 18 carefully, the responsible staff should administer the controlled access area not to allow unauthorized persons to enter into the area by putting the tape on the 0.5mT line or putting the warning signs shown in Item 13 at all entries of the scan room. Magnetic materials such as an iron stretcher, a vacuum sweeper and an iron container shall not be brought into a controlled access area. These magnetic materials are attracted into the magnet and may injure the patient or operator fatally or severally, or cause damage to the MR system. ‘The patients with magnetic fragments being displaced inside the body or with implanted device activated electrically, magnetically or mechanically (cardiac pacemaker, etc.) are not allowed to access a controlled access area, The magnetic field caused by the MR equipment may adversely affect the implanted device. Check with metal detectors to confirm that the patient and the operator do not have metal products. Magnetic fringe fields or high-frequency magnetic fields of the MR system may disturb peripheral equipment such as the patient monitoring system, life supporting system and emergency medical system, etc. The peripheral equipment may (sn-Mox7E) 2. disturb the proper functioning of the MR system. Based on Item 7.3.3 and 7.3.5, the patient monitoring window and the patient monitor should be installed and the audio visual contact should not be limited for routine monitoring of the patient in the scan room by using the Intercom function included as standard equipment of this MR system. Do not use fluoroscent lamp because it generates noise. Dimming system should be of separate switching type. Because thyrister-controlled dimmer generates noise, do not use it. Cables must be connected via line filters for illumination and wall outlet provided in the line filler box installed on the shield wall, Line filters for illumination and wall outlet are not supplied togetehr with the filter box for Aperto supplied from Hitachi. They must be provided by the executer of the shield facility work. Alarm lamp and smoke sensor ‘Their installation positions will be decided by discussion upon submission of the ‘MRI system layout drawing. They must be shielded. Medical gas piping (for oxygen and vacuum suction) Their installation positions will be decided by discussion upon submission of the ‘MRI system layout drawing. ‘The pipes passing through the RF shield wall must be made of electrically nonconductive tube (such as Nylon, polyethylene, Teflon, ete.). If metallic pipe is used, it functions as anntena to induce external noise. Therefore, do not: use it, Insulate the pipes in the primary side from the RF shield room. Connect the insulation tube and cupper pipe with the fitting joint. Ifthe works shown in @) ~ (4) cannot be done, contact Hitachi er our authorized representative TV and BEM ‘The ITB system monitoring the patient in the scan room and BGM device used to relax the patient must be shielded. Box ‘The filter box must be installed at the same time when the shiedling work is carried out. The filter box is comprised of the inner and outer blocks that are to be installed from the sean room and operation room respectively. ‘To assure the RF shielding effect, the filter box must he installed securely. -10- (sx-mor7E) () ‘The filter box is supplied from Hitachi. Installation and shielding work are required to be carried out by the the RF shielding contractor. When installing the filter box in the RF shielding wall, be sure to fix it by putting the shielding wire net (supplied with the filter box) in the wall, For installation details, refer to Fig. 7-.1, aperation ream tie PSPTEH TST 4 Fir with ' MS fol and nut + N+ + fin on & shield wall ME taping vere i Diseasions of open! it onde shicié all + 00%800 3 4 £ 4 z ¢ 2 4 s + + + i] 4 4 4 a ee Cable connection opening Unit mm Fig. 7-1 Installation of Fitter Box -u- (SN-MOZ7E) (2) The installation positions of the filter box will be decided by discussion upon submission of the MRI system layout drawing. (3) The filter box cannot be installed on the wall with a thickness less than 44mm, NOTE: To protect cables, be sure to put the cable covers on the filter box in the scan room side and operation room side after connecting cables to the filter box. Because a size of the cable cover should be different depending on the installation layout, the executer of the RF shield work is requested to prepare the cable cover. ‘The cable cover must be made of nonmagnetic material (such as cupper, alminum, wood, SUS316, plastic material, ete.). Filter box Cable pit Cable cover Fig. 7-2 Installing Cable Cover -12- (oN-Mox7E) 7.5 Cable Pit ‘To connect the cables between the scan room and operation room, the cable pit is required. The cables include RF transmission/Reception cable (RF), power cable for gradient field (GC), signal cable (SIG), power eable (POW) and grounding cable (GND). To prevent deterioration of image and interference, the eables must be laid through the cable pit split to the compartments as shown in Fig. 7-3. ‘The cable pit must be shielded. Especially, use nonmagnetic material (such as copper, aluminum, wood or SUS316) for, mn room. Cable pit in scan room Sereplanie Cable pit cover, Ce bp Smee eee Z, art a sae 2, ‘af “140 Fig. 7-3. Cable Pit () The layout plan shown in the installation layout of the MRI system is submitted in advance and is determined after discussion. (2) Ifcable pit cannot be installed, cable duct system must be installed on the floor -13- (ox-moz7s) 9. Air Conditioning Facility (@)__ Builé the air conditioning facility to meet the environmental conditions in the MRL -tooms (refer to Table 5-1). Do not install the outlet port of the air conditioning duct. above any of the gantry, control unit and MRI unit. Also avoid exposing the gantry to direct air blow. (2) “Because the fringe of the leakage field is small, ordinary produet (galvanized steel plate) can be used as material for the air conditioning duct above the ceiling of the sean room and other accessories. (3) Operate the air conditioning facility for the MRI room (scan room) on 24-hour base. Keep temperature in the sean room at 20 ~ 28°C even when the MRI system is not in operation. @) The air conditioning facility in consideration of the heat dissipation shown in Table 5-1 as air conditioning requirements must be provided. However, do not use multiple airconditioner. (Multiple air-conditioner is the one that operates multiple indoor units ‘connected with one outdoor unit and means the air-conditioning facility that can operate indoor units installed in multiple rooms by only a single outdoor unit.) ‘The multiple air-conditioner cannot operate each of the indoor units independently (such as simultaneous operation for room cooling and heating). Consequently, when the airconditioning facility is operated in hospital for room heating in winter, even if the operation room becomes warmer by dissipation from the MR unit, the operation room cannot be cooled down. Therefore, be sure to provide an independent air conditioning facility exclusive for the operation room (where the MRI unit is installed). Other Works 9.1 Operation Room (2) Donot use carpet to avoid static electricity and dust. 2) Control illumination in a range from 0 to 300 lux, If fluorescent lamp is used, use the lamp that is provided with noise-free ON/OFF switch operation. Use the noiseless dim control system, (3) Noise level of the MRI unit during operation is about 654BA. If noise of the MRI unit installed in the operation room is obtrusive, install soundproofing panel or curtain between the control console and MRI unit. 9.2 Imaging room (Shield room) (2) Scanning noise is extremely quiet as compared with that of the superconducting MRI system, however, if leakage of the scanning noise to the operation room is still obtrusive, use soundproofing materials on the wall. “14 (overs) 10. 9.3 Warning lamp for operating and high magnetic field (Install the warning lamp for “Operating” on the upper walll above the entrance door to the scan room. Because the cable from this warning lamp is connected to the MRI unit, prepare the cable from the indicator lamp up to the position nearby the power distribution board or MRI unit, (2) Install the “High Magnetic Field” alarm lamp on the wall above the entrance door of the preparation room or on the wall above the entrance door of the scan room if there is no preparation room. Supply the power to these indicator lamps from the 100VAC outlet for the illumination apparatus (for operation on 24-hour base). Carry-in and Installation of MRI System 10.1. Carry-in and installation of gantry unit ‘The works are required to carry out by the transportation contractor. (D Place plywood plates (thickness: 9mm) on the carry-in passage and place steel plates (thickness: 3.2mm or more) on them to protect the floor from damage. (2) Lift up the gantry by using a jack and place chilled rollers under the gantry legs and jack boss (rear side). (For jack-up position, refer to Fig. 10-6.) (8) To move the gantry unit, drive in the anchor bolts (M24) in the earry-in passage and floor of the shielding room. Screw an eyebolt (M24) in each anchor bolt. Using the nylon sling, wire rope and winch as shown in Fig. 10-1, carry in the gantry unit, (4) Using the special tools, change the direction of the chilled rollers at the corner of the paseage, NOTE: 1) To lift up the gantay unit, use the eyebolts (M48) at 4 positions of the front and back of the unit, and do not use the transportation jig, Also, use a lift-up nylon sling for the front side 200mm longer than the one for the back cide and lift up the gantry unit horizontally by keeping lifting balance. Any equipment and devices to be carried in the scan room must be the ones made of nonmagnetic material. Especially large-size apparatus such as stretcher for patient transport that is used nearby the magnet can be attracted by the ‘imagnet, causing danger. Therefore, strict control of them by labeling them in different ‘color to discriminate them from the standard devices and accessories is required. Do not bring in any apparatus in the scan room (such as gas cylinder) that can hardly be substitued by nonmagnetic material in structure. Instruct the patient to remove magnetic and conductive materials worn on the patient such as hair pin, clip and fastener before undergoing examination. It is also necessary to establish the system to control them. Probibit any person other than the patient and operator to enter into the scan room. Especially, special care must be taken for abnromality of equipment and malfunction of pacemaker due to the leakage magnetic field, and take preventive measure in advance. Place the poster to call attention of stuffs and patients to precautions who enter into the sean room, Watch, cash card and the like may be damaged. ‘The poster is shown in Fig. 13-1.
