ASSURE Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Elements of Literature in Romeo and Juliet

Grade Level: Grade 9

Lesson Length: 90 minutes

I. Analyze Learners

Learners’ General Characteristics: This lesson is designed for a 9th grade high

school class, which includes a diverse group of students of various ethnicities,

races, genders, and learning abilities. The students are familiar with the historical

background of William Shakespeare and have read all Acts of Romeo and Juliet.

Entry Characteristics: The students in this class are knowledgeable on how to use

personal devices, such as tablets, phones, laptops, and Chromebooks.

Learning Styles: This class is comprised of auditory, visual, and kinesthetic or

tactile learners.

II. State Standards and Objectives

This lesson is designed to meet the Virginia Department of Education’s English

Standards of Learning, specifically Standard 9.4 of the Reading Strand, which states

“The student will read, comprehend, and analyze a variety of literary texts including

narratives, narrative nonfiction, poetry, and drama.”

Standard 9.4c: Identify the characteristics that distinguish literary forms.

Objective 1: The students will review characteristics of various literary forms,

including those of narratives, poetry, drama, essays, and nonfiction narratives.


Standard 9.4d: Use literary terms in describing and analyzing selections.

Objective 2: Students will identify elements of dramatic literature, such as dramatic

structure, monologue, soliloquy, dialogue, and stage directions.

Standard 9.4e: Explain the relationships between and among elements of literature:

characters, plot, setting, tone, point of view, and theme.

Objective 3: Students will understand the meanings of character terms, plot, setting,

point of view, theme, speaker, and narrator.

III. Select Strategies, Methods, Media, and Materials

Strategies: This lesson includes interactive instruction and active learning strategies,

such as the discussion of objectives and the use of computers to participate in an online

activity.

Materials: Students will use computers or their personal devices to complete the online

activity to review the play. Students are also welcomed to have their physical copy of

Romeo and Juliet during the lesson.

Media: Students will complete the online activity using the Kahoot website.

IV. Utilize Technology, Media, and Materials

Prepare Materials: personal devices (smartphones,) laptops, and Chromebooks

Prepare Environment: Students will be at individual desks, which will be arranged in

rows, facing towards the SmartBoard.

Prepare Learners: Students will use this lesson as a review session to cover literary

elements, as well as Romeo and Juliet. Students may have notes and their copy of the

play to use as a reference if necessary.

V. Require Learner Participation


Student participation in this lesson will require them to enter the Kahoot review game,

which they are to play individually. They will use their personal devices to sign onto

the Kahoot game and may create their own username.

VI. Evaluate and Revise

Student Performance: Students will be graded based on participation for this

assignment. I can utilize the tools on Kahoot to determine which questions and concepts

need to be reviewed further, as well as any students that need extra review. Students

who gain the top three places will get bonus points on their final assessment for Romeo

and Juliet, with the first place winner gaining five extra points, the second gaining four

extra points, and the third gaining three points.

Media Effectiveness: Was the Kahoot stimulating, understandable, and appealing to

various learning styles? Were students able to navigate their personal devices, laptops,

Chromebooks, and the Kahoot website easily? Were there any problems that occurred

during the lesson? What was the overall response to the use of Kahoot, specifically as

a review game?
