Background of the Study

Education is one of the best things we can have, a thing that will help us to become a
better version of ourselves. Education in the country is a right in which every person should be
given the chance to be educated, everything goes by until COVID 19 arrived that changes the
perception of every human being especially in terms of education. Everything gets questionable;
What will happened? Is the world can survived? Is the educational aspect will continue?

On December 31, 2019, Chinese authorities reported to the World Health Organization
(WHO), the presence of numerous cases of an unknown pneumonia-like disease that presented
like flu in Wuhan City, Hubei Province in China. After virus isolation and analysis of the viral
genome sequence from the lower respiratory tract samples of infected patients, a novel
coronavirus named severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus 2 or SARS-CoV-2
was identified and subsequently named COVID-19 by the WHO. A month after its emergence,
the WHO declared COVID-19 a global pandemic and a day later, the United States (US)
declared the disease a public health emergency. By May 27, 2020, the WHO had confirmed
5,488 million cases of COVID-19 in over 180 countries. With no successful vaccine or treatment
available, and in an attempt to contain the spread of COVID-19, most governments around the
world, including the US, authorized unprecedented social containment measures. These
measures, among others, included social distancing and the temporary physical closure of
educational institutions. Educational institutions had to adopt a digital approach to instruction
and student learning, dramatically transitioning traditional in-person classroom instruction to
predominantly distance learning where teaching is provided remotely on digital platforms
(WHO, 2019).

As of now the world’s situation has 110,859,998 Corona Virus confirmed cases,
2,452,926 deaths and 85,803,818 recoveries. In the Philippines, it has 555,163 Corona Virus
confirmed cases, 11,673 deaths and 512,163 recoveries (WHO, 2021).

Currently, it is common to reproduce online the content of traditional classroom lessons.

However, due to the restriction of face-to-face education, SEND teachers must try more to
arrange innovative online courses, which will actively engage students, through interactive
lessons, tests, presentations, and open discussions. The COVID-19 crisis had a severe impact on
traditional educational progress and universities may profit from this unanticipated opportunity
to discover deficiencies and accelerate the reform of online education through efficient
management. This urgent situation is possible to promote international collaboration and sharing
of experiences, knowledge and resources to develop a global online education network (Sun et
al. 2020).

Education is one of the best assets we have in which no one will get from us and when
the COVID-19 pandemic has become a global health issue and has had a major impact on
education. Consequently, as the beginning of the School Year 2020-2021 the Loyola High
School learning methods were delivered through Distance Learning. COVID-19 pandemic has
affected all the levels of the education system. Educational institution of the Philippines has been
temporarily closed and cancelled all school universities and also all the gathering to decrease the
spread of virus. Due to the suspension of face to face class the Philippine implement the method
of distance learning. This form of method is the best way to minimize contact between the
student and teachers. However, many students suffered because of the lack of requirements for
the method. All these set aside, the question on everyone’s mind is “Does distance learning is
effective for the students?”
Statement of the Problem

The main focus of the study is to find the answer to the effect of the distance learning education
on the academic performance among the Grade 12 students of Loyola High School S.Y. 2020-
2021.

 What is the big difference between implementing distance learning and face-to-face
learning and which is easier to implement?
 What are the positive and negative effects of distance learning among the Grade 12
students of Loyola High School due to COVID 19?
 How can the Grade 12 students survived from this method of educational aspect?

Objectives

The main objective of the study is to determine the effect of distance learning on
the academic performance among Grade 12 students of Loyola High School S.Y.2020-
2021). The objectives of the study is listed below:
 To I identify the big difference between implementing distance learning and face-to-face
learning and which is easier to implement.
 To distinguished the positive and negative effects of distance learning on the academic
performance among the Grade 12 students of Loyola High School due to COVID 19.
 To determine how the Grade 12 students can survived from this method of educational
aspect.
Definition of Terms

For the better understanding of this study the following terms are defined operationally and
conceptually.

 Distance Learning - lets you study remotely without regular face-to-face contact with a
teacher in the classroom.
 Academic Performance- refers to the students’ grade eleven - general average.
 Senior High School- this refers to the grade twelve senior high school students who are
involved in romantic relationship.
 COVID-19 or Coronavirus disease- is an infectious disease caused by a newly
discovered coronavirus.
 Pandemic- is a disease outbreak that spreads across countries or continents.
Research Hypothesis

A study designed to look at the new different learning modalities to learners specifically
the distance learning of the Grade 12 students of Loyola High School S.Y. 2020-2021, resulting
in students facing enough difficulty and stress whether they are learning in this new learning
system or not. Considering that most students have difficulty focusing on their studies at home
that brought extraordinary disruption to their education that impact their ability to gain the same
quality education as before.

Significance of the Study

The researchers are still persistent in finding solutions to how to enhance the learnings of the
students on these different learning modalities of Loyola High School S.Y. 2020-2021.  This, the
result of these studies is very helpful and can give benefits to the following:

To the school administrators, they will be given ideas on how to design the class learning
to be effectively memorable.

To the teachers, will be informed and will be encouraged to deliver effective teachings
with an understanding of the situation of the students during this pandemic.

To the parents, they will be willing to support and motivate their children's education in
terms of these different approaches to learning in the school.

To the students, particularly, the grade 12 students of Loyola High School, this study
would help them to be flexible enough and to adapt easily to this new learning system in this
challenging time and even in the difficulties they might encounter in the future.

To the future researcher, this will serve as one of their references in conducting their
research.

Scope and Limitation

This study focuses on the effectiveness of distance learning on the academic

performance of Grade 12 students due to pandemic. The scope of the study involves the time and
money spent, tools/materials (laptop, gadgets and printer), techniques that are used by the
researchers and the number of students needed to complete the experiment. The time range of the
study from giving online survey questionnaire up to the final output ranges from a minimum of 4
months and a maximum of 6 months investigation. The students involve on the study to answer
the online survey questionnaire are only the Grade 12 students of Loyola High School. The
study would be done through the utilization of online questionnaire to the respondents as a
survey and reference. By this strategy the researchers will be able to know the effectiveness of
distance learning on the academic performance of the Grade 12 students due to pandemic.
Conceptual Framework of the study

Figure1: Illustrates the conceptual paradigm of the study. In the center of the conceptual
framework the learner, motivation for distance learning and the academic performance. The
motivation for distance learning has branches. The right branch are the teachers. The attitude and
rules in class. Second, the way how the student learn through online class or modular class. The
left branch are the interaction with technology, academic overload, personal problem and access
to the ways of how the students learn and lastly the interaction with the students.
