CASE STUDY: “Employee Layoffs at the University Medical Center”

Help Atty Pascual and Joy Lopez solve this problem by following the steps:
1. State the main problem of the hospital.
 The hospital is experiencing financial difficulties, including a net loss that
has impacted hospital revenue and resulted in employee layoffs.

2. State the different areas of consideration: Strengths of the hospital, Weaknesses

of the hospital and Opportunities.

 Strengths of the hospital

o It is Dasmarinas City's largest hospital, with capacity for a large
number of patients and personnel.
 Weaknesses of the Hospital
o The hospital experiencing financial difficulties.
o Lack of HR role.
o No HR Planning.
o The hospital has no Marketing Strategy
 Opportunities
o They can compete with other hospitals, and they can choose the
best personnel to remain in the hospital.
o Expansion/Renovation of Building
o Improve quality of health care services
 Threats
o If they have a large number of patients to accommodate, they may
experience a staffing shortage.

3. Give your proposed solutions /alternative courses of action or ACA to help the
hospital overcome the problem.
 Offer early retirement since they are unionized
 They may offer Skeletal workforce schedule so that everyone is still part of
the Hospital.
 Voluntary termination incentives to allow employees to decide whether to
quit in exchange for a package of benefits
 The hospital should set up the HR planning model annually.
 They should improve the payroll-connected appraisal system. Employees
must be treated fairly and motivated by the system. To avoid layoffs in the
future, the evaluation method can be used to reduce payroll for
undervalued employees.

4. State your recommendation based on your ACA.

 Rather than laying off a large number of employees, provide a severance

package and an early retirement option to a top employee approaching
retirement age. By doing so, you will be limiting the number of people who
will need to be laid off. It can also assist them without causing them to
experience an emotional breakdown. Assist other staff who will be laid off in
finding a new hospital.
