Mini Task Due Date:

Function

Materials Needed:

Tape measure (individual since we’re doing it from home) or a piece of straw and a ruler.

Procedure:

1. Form a group of at least 10 students and find the following measures for each person to the nearest millimeter.

Circumference of: head, wrist, neck

Length of: foot, height, radius (lower arm bone from wrist to elbow), tibia (lower leg bone from ankle to kneecap),
hand span (tip of thumb to tip of little finger with hand spread open)

2. Tabulate the data and check if each measure is reasonable.

4. Which sets are functions? Calculate and record the ratios for each person using the ordered pairs in step 3. Which patterns do you find?
Are these ratios which appear to be constant? How do these constant ratios appear in the graph?

The ratios (y/x) for each of the set are presented in the attached table alongside with the plots or graphs. Apparently, there is a
significantly high deviation among ordered pairs in each set thus it is hard to find a pattern. Ideally, the ratios for each set of ordered
pairs must be consistent. If the ratios (y/x) are almost equal, it will be reflected in the graph as it will appear linear. Unfortunately, the
data have lesser precision and accuracy, primarily due to human error in terms of measurement.

Given the sets of ordered pairs, the set that can be considered as a function is only the set (tibia, height) since it has a one-to-one
correspondence, such that for every unique tibia length, there is only one corresponding height. Thus by definition, the set (tibia,
height) is a function. All of the remaining sets have a one-to-many correspondence which makes these set not a function, since there
are multiple correspondences for each unique element in the domain. For instance, in the set (height, radius), student F and student I
have the same height but correspond to different radius. The same manner applies to the remaining sets.

5. What is the significance in knowing these ideas about body ratios?

It is important to have an idea of body ratios for it is one of the parameters that indicate whether a person is physically developed
accordingly. It is also one of the bases of the artists when viewing body ratios and proportions in an aesthetic perspective. One of the
most famous and significant body ratios is the “golden ratio.”
