1 Getting Started

This chapter describes how to start and begin using the NEXIO® FCP
Integration Gateway.

This chapter includes the following sections:

„ Overview on page 17
„ Bandwidth and Client Connectivity on page 31
„ Connecting to the NEXIO FCP Integration Gateway on page 38

Overview The FCP Integration Gateway allows third party video editors and
browsers to connect to the NEXIO server system as though it were a
network share. From this network share, editors and browsers can play
media from the NEXIO RAID set in file formats preferred by the third party
applications.

The FCP Integration Gateway is a solution combining the NX1000/

NX1010 hardware platform with the FCP Integration Gateway software
applications.
18 Chapter 1
Getting Started

Preparing the NEXIO FCP Integration Gateway to

accept Client Connections
Once the NX1000FCP/NX1010FCP hardware is connected / configured to
work with the NEXIO network and NEXIO SAN (refer to the NEXIO
NX1010 Series Hardware Guide [175-00043-00 REV A] for the detailed
physical connection and setup and the NEXIO NX1010FCP Software
Installation Guide [175-100179-00 REV B] for detailed software
installation instructions), you will need to verify that the LLM and CIFS
Server Applications are running on the FCP Integration Gateway.

To prepare the NEXIO FCP Integration Gateway

With the NX1000FCP/NX1010FCP powered on, you will see two icons on
the desktop (LLM and CIFS Server).

Installation and User Guide

With the LLM and CIFS Server Application running and set properly, you
are ready to connect a client computer to the Gateway.

Bandwidth and Due to the variations in hardware and software that Harris doesn’t control,
Harris does not guarantee real time playback from NEXIO through the
Client Mac client. If the sequence is completely rendered and all content is on
the Mac client, then it’s completely up to the Mac to play it out.
Connectivity
With the 2.1 release of the FCP Integration Gateway, you can connect up
to 7 clients per Gateway.

The recommended number of Final Cut Pro workstations that you should
use simultaneously depends on the video format and bitrate that you are
working with.
32 Chapter 1
Getting Started

Figure 1-4 shows the total number of video streams that can pass through
a single NX1000FCP to the attached Final Cut Pro client machines. The
total number of streams is affected by bit rate and the number of FCP
clients connected.

Figure 1-4 NX1000FCP Video Streams

a single NX1010FCP to the attached Final Cut Pro client machines.

Figure 1-5 NX1010FCP Video Streams

NEXIO FCP Integration Gateway 33
Installation and User Guide

Harris recommends the following guidelines when connecting Final Cut

Pro workstations to the NX1000FCP/NX1010FCP. These guidelines assume
approximately 4 real-time video streams per client.

„ DV25
‰ up to 7 clients
„ DV50
‰ up to 5 clients with NX1000FCP
‰ up to 7 clients with NX1010FCP
„ DVCPROHD
‰ up to 2 clients with NX1000FCP
‰ up to 4 clients with NX1010FCP
„ AVC-Intra
‰ up to 2 clients with NX1000FCP
‰ up to 4 clients with NX1010FCP
„ IMX (30/40/50
‰ up to 7 clients
„ XDCAM HD (35)
‰ up to 7 clients
„ XDCAM EX
‰ up to 7 clients
„ XDCAM HD422
‰ up to 6 clients with NX1000FCP
‰ up to 7 clients with NX1010FCP

Limiting Client Since the number of available video streams through the FCP Integration
Bandwidth in Final Gateway is not limited on a per client basis, by default, any one client may
Cut Pro use as many video streams as are available through the NX1000FCP/
NX1010FCP. Therefore (especially when connecting the maximum number
of clients to the NX1000FCP/NX1010FCP) it is necessary to use the
settings in Apple's Final Cut Pro application to limit the real-time streams
for each individual Final Cut Pro workstation. By doing this, you can
ensure that no one client will ever take more bandwidth (or play more
streams) than any other FCP workstation.
34 Chapter 1
Getting Started

To limit the number of real-time streams in Final Cut Pro

1 Open Final Cut Pro and go to the Final Cut Pro menu and select System
Settings.

Working with Media

Installing Before you can begin working with media from the NEXIO system to your
Final Cut Pro Workstation, the NEXIO Browser and NEXIO Export plug-ins
NEXIO Final must be installed on your Final Cut Pro Workstation.

Cut Pro Additionally, you have the option of installing NEXIO Sync and NRCS Tool.
NEXIO Sync notifies a Final Cut Pro user when the duration of a clip in
Plug-ins record has changed. NEXIO NRCS Tool allows you to view stories and
scripts from a newsroom computer system, such as ENPS, iNEWS, or
OCTOPUS. To do this, a NEXIO MOS Gateway is also required. You can
also add NEXIO Timeline and NEXIO InstantOnline. NEXIO Timeline allows
Final Cut Pro users the ability of importing their Velocity ESX or Velocity
PRX timelines for finishing. NEXIO InstantOnline is designed to allow Final
Cut Pro users the ability of exporting their sequences to InstantOnline III
for conforming.

NEXIO Sync NEXIO Sync notifies a Final Cut Pro user when the duration of a clip in
record has changed. If the editor is using media from the NEXIO Server
that is in record, NEXIO Sync will activate. The user can then update at
their discretion, and Final Cut Pro will be notified of the new clip duration,
and synchronize itself with the clip. The new duration of the clip is
immediately visible in the Final Cut Pro project bin.

Usage
NEXIO Sync is displayed as a menu item in the right hand side of the
Mac OS X menu bar. When Final Cut Pro is not running, it will be hidden.
When Final Cut Pro is opened, NEXIO Sync becomes visible in the menu.

The menu item has two display states. When there are no clips with
available updates, the word "NEXIO" is displayed in gray. When a clip
becomes available for update, the word "NEXIO" is displayed in red. If the
menu is red, the NEXIO Sync menu will display the list of the clips available
for updating. The user can select an individual clip to update in Final Cut
Pro, or select all clips at once. There is also a quit option in the menu.

NEXIO The NEXIO Timeline plug-in should be installed if your NewsForce system
includes Velocity ESX high resolution On-SAN editors or Velocity PRX low
Timeline resolution editors (version 1.3 or newer). The NEXIO Timeline plug-in is
designed to allow Final Cut Pro users the ability of importing their Velocity
ESX or Velocity PRX timelines for finishing.

When installed, the Final Cut Pro editor simply chooses “Harris
NEXIOTimeline” from FCP’s File > Import menu. (Figure 2-35)

Figure 2-35 Timeline Plug-in

The Final Cut Pro user is then presented with a finder window that points

tying up the Final Cut Pro workstation with the rendering of the final
output.

InstantOnline III currently supports the conforming of Final Cut Pro

sequences that contain video, audio and graphics that are stored on the
NEXIO shared storage. Final Cut Pro sequences that contain local content
(or local content combined with NEXIO SAN content) will not be processed
by InstantOnline III.

In addition to supporting cuts only sequences, InstantOnline III will

conform sequences containing a limited number of Final Cut Pro effects.
These effects include SMPTE wipes, dissolves, audio level changes and
graphic overlay. If a sequence sent to InstantOnline III contains other
advanced effects, the final output may be aborted or the effects will be
replaced or ignored.

When installed, the Final Cut Pro editor simply highlights the sequence to
be exported and chooses “Harris InstantOnline” from FCP’s File > Export
