What are the importance of phonemic awareness? Teaching strategies?

Phonemic awareness is a subset of phonological awareness that entails recognizing and
manipulating specific sounds inside words.
Phonological awareness emerges in preschool and is a strong predictor of future reading and
spelling abilities. Before they can learn to read and spell, children must first acquire their
phonological awareness. Phonological awareness is the act of identifying sounds in spoken
language, which includes recognizing rhyming words, recognizing alliteration, and counting the
number of syllables in a word.

Importance of Phonemic Awareness:


It is critical to understand that words are made up of discrete sounds that can be modified in
order to learn to read and spell. Similarly, knowing that words are made up of phonemes and
that phonemes are represented by graphemes is critical for reading comprehension. A key skill
is the ability to take words apart, put them back together, and transform them into a new word.
It's pointless to teach children new grapheme phoneme correspondences (GPCs) if they don't
understand how they join together to form a word. Reading with a child entails listening to them
string out individual letters that have no significance, and writing with a child entails telling them
which letters they need to write. For everyone involved, this would be a stressful and frustrating
situation.
Of course, there is a time and place for rote learning words, such as 'tricky words' or 'frequent
exception words,' but the tactics for learning these would not be effective for learning to read
and spell every single word.

Phonemic Awareness Teaching Techniques:


Some youngsters will develop phonemic awareness on their own, as a result of phonological
and other listening games and exercises, while others will require explicit instruction.
When the exercise involves a puppet, such as an alien or a robot, and you have to converse
with it using ‘sound language’ or ‘robot talk,’ children often find the notion of orally blending and
orally segmenting more meaningful and intriguing.
