Why is it called freelancing?
The term “freelance” dates back to the 1800s when a
“freelance” referred to a medieval mercenary who would
fight for whichever nation or person paid them the most.
The term “lance” referred to the long weapon that knights
on horseback used to knock opponents off of their horses.
Over time, the term continued to mean “independent”
but left the battlefield to be applied to politics and finally
work of any kind.

Why are people freelancing?

Freelancing provides a lot of flexibility and control to
the individual. Most freelancers choose their own hours,
the work that they do, the clients they work with, and may
even be able to work remotely.
Freelancing is also a form of entrepreneurship, which
means the freelancer has total control of their earning
potential. Freelancers aren’t locked into a salary, and so
they can earn as much as they are able to bill to their
clients.
And as a freelancer, you are your own boss.
Freelancing provides a lot of variety in the type of work you
can do, too. If you are someone with a lot of interests and
are drawn to trying new things, freelancing can help you
explore all kinds of projects and industries.
Historically, freelancing isn’t something people
typically do forever. They either hire other freelancers or
employees to build a full agency, they build their own
3
products to replace their freelance income, or they go back
to working full time.
Freelancing provides the flexibility many people want
in order to figure out their next career move.

How much can I get paid freelancing?

According to that same 2019 study, the median

freelance income is $20-28 per hour. Of course with so
many different freelance jobs available, that number can
vary quite a bit.

Transcription services may only earn $5-10 per hour,

while software engineering roles may earn $75 or even
hundreds of dollars per hour.

It’s best to compare the freelance rates of your

particular skill set to get a good estimate of the expected
income you could earn as a freelancer.

What are the risks of freelancing?

4
Freelancing comes with both financial and some
health risks.

In the United States, one of the biggest benefits to full

time employment is access to healthcare and other financial
benefits outside of your typical salary. That may include a
401K retirement plan or company-provided health
insurance.

For freelancers, being hired as an independent

contractor generally means companies will not provide
those same financial or healthcare benefits to you.

So freelancers are on their own when it comes to

planning for their financial futures and enrolling in health
insurance coverage.

Not only are freelancers on their own to set these

benefits up for themselves, but they are also at a bit of a
disadvantage.

When a company negotiates a health insurance policy

with a broker, they are often able to get more favourable
rates since they are buying in bulk. But as a self-employed
individual, you are buying a policy for yourself and your
family only.

And, unfortunately, that means your health insurance

may cost more.

5
It is easy to set up your own retirement savings
account, but there will not be any matching contributions
from your employer.

And finally, freelancers are responsible for all income

coming into the business. If you are unable or unwilling to
sell more projects and land more clients, your income will
dry up.

These risks are all manageable, but they are worth

considering before you jump into freelancing full time.

What type of work can I do by

freelancing?
Companies are becoming much more open to and
interested in hiring freelancers doing many different types
of work. So freelancing has become much more acceptable
for a wide variety of roles.

Introduction
E-learning uses electronic media to deliver flexible
vocational education and training. It includes access to,
downloading and use of web, CD-ROM or computer-based
learning resources in the classroom, workplace or home. It
also includes online access to and participation in course
activities (e.g. online simulations, online group
discussions), directed use of the Internet for learning and
research purposes, structured learning-based email
communication and online assessment activities. E-
learning does not include email dissemination of course
information, email communication between a
teacher/trainer and learner on a single learning issue, or
online administration of learning activities.
The effectiveness of an e-learners experience is greatly
enhanced through student-centered design. For example,
students remember more information from a text book that
is well organized, with extensive visuals,
reflection/interaction points, clear headings, etc. The same
concepts exist for online courses— learners learn better
through use of clear headings, limited distracters, visuals,
screen-friendly fonts, appropriate white space, web safe
colors, etc. Basically, usability is the process of testing
(through observation) how students behave with a course—
what works, what doesn't, what confuses.

Industry Overview
India is the second-fastest-growing freelance market
in the world with a massive increase in the number of
freelancers this year, according to a report on ‘Freelancing
in 2020: An Abundance of Opportunities’ by Payoneer.
“Ranked as the second-fastest-growing freelance
market in the world, India’s freelance economy currently
consists of an estimated 15 million freelancers,” the report
said.
Furthermore, India witnessed a 46 per cent increase in
new freelancers from Q1 to Q2, 2020 as per the report.
“Rapid changes in technology and workplace
expectations have redefined traditional employment
models. There has been an increase in the number of
individuals who are considering freelancing as a long-term
career,” it said.
Freelancers are also recovering from the impact of the
Covid-19 pandemic. As relaxations imposed to curb the
spread of Covid-19 ease, freelancers are bouncing back with
growth in revenue.
“Covid-19 brought a short-term slowdown in revenue
growth, but it bounced back even stronger with 28 per cent
growth from May to June,” the report said.
Apart from India, other popular markets for gig
workers include the US, Pakistan, and Ukraine.
The report further highlighted how the pandemic has
changed the future of work with increased technology

19
adoption, stating that “a permanent change in the global
workforce is inevitable”.
“Going forward, while there will still be space for full-time
employees, more and more companies will seek remote and
freelance workers for a wider variety of tasks", the report
said.

25
PESTEL Analysis
Political:
 The level of political stability that the country has in
recent years.

 The integrity of the politicians and their likelihood to

take part in acts of corruption, as the resulting
repercussions may lead to possible impeachments or
resignations of high level government employees.

 The laws that the country enforces, especially with

regards to business, such as contract law, as they
dictate what is and is not allowed to do. Some
countries, for example, prohibit alcohol or have
certain conditions that must be fulfilled, while some
government systems have inefficient amounts of red
tape that discourage business.

Economic:
 The economic system that is currently operational in
the sector in question- whether it is a monopoly, an
26
oligopoly, or something similar to a perfect
competition economic system.

 The rate of GDP growth in the country will affect how

fast is expected to grow in the near future.

 The interest rates in the country would affect how

much individuals are willing to borrow and invest.
Higher rates would result in greater investments that
would mean more growth for

Social factors:
 The demographics of the population, meaning their
respective ages and genders, vastly impact whether or
not a certain product may be marketed to them.
Makeup is mostly catered to women, so targeting a
majority male population would be less population
than targeting a population that is mostly female.

 The class distribution among the population is of

paramount importance: would be unable to promote a
premium product to the general public if the majority
of the population was a lower class; rather, they would
have to rely on very niche marketing.

Technological:
 The recent technological developments and
breakthroughs made by competitors, as mentioned
27
above. If encounters a new technology that is gaining
popularity in the industry in question, it is important
to monitor the level of popularity and how quickly it is
growing and disrupting its competitors’ revenues. This
would translate to the level of urgency required to
adequately respond to the innovation, either by
matching the technology or finding an innovative
alternative.
 How easy, and thus quickly, will the technology be
diffused to other firms in the industry, leading to other
firms copying the technological processes/ features of

 How much an improvement of technology would

improve/ transform what the product initially offers.
If this improvement is drastic, then other firms in the
industry suffer more heavily.

Environmental:
 The current weather conditions may significantly
impact the ability of to manage the transportation of
both the resources and the finished product. This, in
turn, would affect the delivery dates of the final
product in the case of, say, an unexpected monsoon.

 Climate change would also render some products

useless. For example, in the case of textiles, in
countries where the winter has become very mild due
to Global Warming, warm winter clothes have much
less of a market.

28
 Those companies that produce extremely large
amounts of waste may be required by law to manage
their environmental habits. This may include pollution
fines and quotas, which may place a financial strain on

Legal:
 Intellectual property laws and other data protection
laws are, as mentioned earlier, in place to protect the
ideas and patents of companies who are only profiting
because of that information. If there is a likelihood
that the data is stolen, then will lose its competitive
edge and have a high chance of failure.

 Discrimination laws are placed by the government to

protect the employees and ensure that everyone in is
treated fairly and given the same opportunities,
regardless of gender, age, disability, ethnicity, religion
or sexual orientation.

 Health and safety laws were created after witnessing

the horrible conditions that employees were forced to
work in during and directly after the industrial
revolution. Implementing the proper regulations may
be expensive, but has to engage in it, not only due to
the law but also out of 's personal feeling of ethical and
social responsibility to other human beings.
