Garden VARIETY
I don’t like things on my head. Ever. I was always the hoodless kid on a cold
playground, and now I’m the only helmet-free (and frowned upon because of
it) adult in my bicycling group. So when I was advised that I’d need to make a
millinery exception for an event called Hats in the Garden—less than a month
after I’d started at Naples Illustrated—I pondered my career path with great
angst. And then I bought a glorified headband that some would call a fascinator.
I called it a compromise.
It was at my first Hats last fall that I began to discover the contrasts of Naples that
have captivated me ever since. Its residents are some of the most accomplished
people in the world yet also some of the most approachable. And while they
have an elevated sense of couture, they’re equally comfortable in a tennis skirt.
But where Neapolitans come together, perhaps more so than anywhere else, is
in their love for philanthropy and the cultural arts. In this issue, we celebrate both.
The first Hats in the Garden, a fundraiser for the Naples Botanical Garden, was
held in 2004 and is now considered to be the opening event of the social season.
We explore this elegant luncheon and salute the women behind it beginning on
page 70. Also this month, we raise the curtain on the many Paradise Coast arts
options that await you, from new productions at the Gulfshore Playhouse to the
new home of the Holocaust Museum & Cohen Education Center, and from free
Naples Concert Band shows at Cambier Park to Broadway’s Hamilton and more
MEGAN DIPIERO
at Artis—Naples. Options abound in our curated guide that starts on page 76.
Generosity and creativity cover the same canvas, meanwhile, in Art Aid Na-
ples, a group of prominent local artists inspired by the efforts of a former teach-
er and a nun turned attorney. What began as one family’s story (page 92) has
evolved into another stellar example of Neapolitan largesse. Philanthropy can
be found not only in nonprofit organizations but also in area businesses, such
as Ultimate Garages, which will open this month. Turn to page 30 in our Insider
section to learn why owner Jim Buonavolonta, a longtime Naples cardiologist, BRIM REALITY
says charities are closest to his heart. LAST NOVEMBER AT

The local arts community is
reframing itself thanks to the launch
of the Collier County Arts and
Culture Strategic Plan, which
includes three public forums to
encourage input on how to pro-
mote the area as an arts destination.
The first meeting, which occurred
in September, generated ideas
ranging from a Collier County arts
magnet school to a Naples festival
in December to lure patrons west
from Art Basel in Miami.
“The ideas have been wonder-
ful and very realistic,” says Kristen
Donovan, community engage-
ment coordinator at the United
Arts Council of Collier County,
which has partnered with the Cul-
tural Planning Group, a consult-
ing firm that’s collecting informa-
tion through forums, a survey,
and more. Discussion groups
and interviews will be conducted
through January, and a draft plan
will be presented to the commu-
nity in February.
“The reason that Naples is so
sought after is that it’s a small town
with big-city culture,” says Kristine
Meek of Harmon-Meek Gallery in
Naples. “The arts have always been
important to the economic fabric of
our community, and it’s good that
people are talking about where we
can go from here.” (uaccollier.com)

This season, several arts organiza-
tions are celebrating Beethoven’s
250th birthday with concerts dedi-
cated to the famed German composer.
Classic Chamber Concerts kicks off its
twenty-fifth season on December 16 (which
most scholars believe to be Beethoven’s birth-
date) with an all-Beethoven program featuring
works written during Beethoven’s very rich
“middle period” of composing, performed
by Orion Weiss, Yura Lee, and Clive Green-
smith. Classic Chamber Concerts continues the
Beethoven theme January 20 with the Formosa
Quartet and March 9 with the Miro Quartet fea-
turing Clive Greensmith. ARTIS—NAPLES ALSO PAYS TRIBUTE TO BEETHOVEN ALL SEASON. HE IS THE TOPIC OF A LECTURE SERIES,

February 29, it will present “Mashupapaloza,” a program that merges classic compositions with
popular artists, such as Bach and Bruno Mars. Then, on May 16, as part of its Brave New Music
series, it will stage “Symphabulous! A Symphonic Drag Show,” featuring The Voice finalist Chris Weaver
and his drag persona, Nedra Belle. Both concerts will take place at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts

TASTE By Mark Spivak
Mussel
MANIA
This classic appetizer has been on the Barbatella menu since the restaurant opened in 2012. “It’s a hearty, Sicilian treatment of a traditional Italian dish,”
says Jason Goddard, corporate chef for the Aielli Group. “We steam the mussels with white wine, garlic, tomatoes, and oregano. They pick up the acid-
ity from the tomatoes, and the sauce gets infused with the juices from the mussels as they open.” While Goddard has experimented with different ver-
sions, customer demand always brings this one back. “We use wild Maine mussels or ones from Prince Edward Island, depending on the season,” he
adds. “The most important thing with shellfish is to use the freshest possible ingredients, and we pride ourselves on that.” (barbatellanaples.com)

The growing menace of plas-
tics plaguing the world and its
oceans extends to most yoga
mats, which typically end up in
landfills because they’re created
using nonrecyclable materials.
However, yogis can feel more
serene in their practice with Bali-
based Yogi Design Lab’s mats
that are composed of natural
tree rubber and microfiber made
from recycled plastic bottles.
Founder Chad Turner’s goal was
to develop a product that is not
only highly functional and beau-
tiful but also boasts the small-
est eco footprint possible. While
he aims to limit plastic usage in
the long run, his company is cur-
rently repurposing materials that
are already out there, employ-
ing a closed-loop supply chain to
manufacture its mats in an envi-
ronmentally conscious manner.
Yoga Design Lab mats are availa-
ble locally at BKS Yoga Studio in
Naples. Studio manager Jill Rod-

mat for hot yoga and those prone
to sweating. “I practice on one

they get a little damp, they grip

COMIC Relief
Comedian Paula Poundstone might operate under the belief that nobody listens to her, but the evidence suggests otherwise. Per-
haps best known for her frequent appearances on the NPR quiz show Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me, she also was the first woman to
perform stand-up at the White House Correspondent’s Dinner, has penned two books, voiced a character in the film Inside Out,
and hosts her own podcast, Nobody Listens to Paula Poundstone. When not at home with her two dogs and 13 cats, Poundstone
maintains a busy touring schedule. Ahead of her upcoming stop at the Southwest Florida Event Center in Bonita Springs on
November 22, NI caught up with her to discuss comedy and the secret to winning a public radio game show. (swfleventcenter.com)
