EE558 – Battery Energy Storage Systems

Fall 2021

Course Catalog Description

Batteries are ubiquitous in 21st century; from personal computers to residential storage units, from storage for renewable energy sources to high
power electric vehicles, batteries are used as sources of energy and storage. They are used to power medical devices, home appliances and are
used to store energy in grids. Li-ion batteries are gradually becoming the most commonly used type of battery. They are popular because of their
low maintenance requirement, long lifetime, light weight, high energy density, and considerable depth of discharge, wide temperature range, low
self-discharge rate, and fast charging capabilities.

Li-ion batteries have diverse applications and are manufactured with various storage capacities and chemistries. Some common chemistries
include Lithium Cobalt Oxide (LCO), Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery (LFP), Lithium Manganese Oxide (LMO), Lithium Nickel Cobalt Aluminum Oxide
(NCA), and Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide (NMC). These batteries differ in their energy storage capabilities, such as energy density and
power density for different applications. Now, this technology is entering the realm of back-up power system storage because of long cycle-life at
high temperature, high energy efficiency and high energy utilization even at high discharge current rates.

In this course, we will try to understand how batteries operate. Thereafter, we will study how we can model the batteries. We will start with the
electric equivalent circuit model followed by physics based models. We will then cover the battery dynamics and state space models. Battery
Management Systems will be introduced. The reliability and degradation analysis of batteries and how we can estimate the health and useful life
of the battery will be discussed. Finally, we will study important use cases of battery energy storage systems and how the batteries are integrated
in the practical systems.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
 Understanding fundamentals of battery energy storage systems.
 Introduction to battery models both equivalent circuit and physics based models. .
 Introduction to battery dynamics.
 Reliability and Battery degradation analysis.
 Applications of battery energy storage systems.
 MATLAB based assignments will be given to improve the fundamentals on few selected topics.

Harassment Policy
SSE, LUMS and particularly this class, is a harassment free zone. There is absolutely zero tolerance for any behaviour
that is intended, or has the expected result of making anyone uncomfortable and negatively impacts the class
environment, or any individual’s ability to work to the best of their potential.

In case a differently-abled student requires accommodations for fully participating in the course, students are advised
to contact the instructor so that they can be facilitated accordingly.

If you think that you may be a victim of harassment, or if you have observed any harassment occurring in the purview of
this class, please reach out and speak to me. If you are a victim, I strongly encourage you to reach out to the Office of
Accessibility and Inclusion at oai@lums.edu.pk or the sexual harassment inquiry committee at
harassment@lums.edu.pk for any queries, clarifications, or advice. You may choose to file an informal or a formal
