Lift (Elevator) Safety

An elevator or lift is a vertical transport vehicle that efficiently moves people or goods between floors of a
building. They are generally powered by electric motors that either drive traction cables and counterweight
systems, or pump hydraulic fluid to raise a cylindrical piston.
Elevator is an important machine for patients, guests, guardians, small children and visitors. It makes our life
easier. It helps us to go to different floors faster, allows us to transport goods with ease and helps us feel
comfortable and relax all throughout the ride. Let us discuss about the safety features and dos and don’ts of Lift.
Elevator safety features
Today's elevator systems adhere to strict safety codes and standards and incorporate a wide variety of features
designed to help reduce the chances of accidents and give passengers a quick, dependable ride. Some of the
numerous safety features offered include:
1. Safety brakes: Elevator will stop instantly if the elevator rope brakes due o any reason
2. Door sensors and door closing device: It is a device that detects a passenger or an object on the doorway
which prevents the doors from closing.
3. Hoist way door interlocks/switches: It is a locking mechanism provides a means to mechanically lock
each hoist way door. The elevator cannot leave a landing unless the doors are fully closed and secured.
4. Door restraints: When the closing force of the door is greater than 150N, the door machine will
automatically stop closing the door and reverse open the door to play a certain degree of closing protection.
5. Automatic Rescue Device (ARD): It is rescue system used for rescuing passengers trapped in an elevator in
case power failure. ARD is safely used to save the passengers to the nearest floor within minutes of power
failure and give instant relief to the passengers.
6. Pit buffers: The purpose of elevator buffers is to provide protection against the malfunction of
an elevator control system resulting in the elevator continuing to travel past the lowest stop to the base of
the elevator shaft.
7. Emergency alarm switches: is a switch used to alert the rescue team in case of an emergency.
8. Emergency stop buttons: is a button used to stop an elevator, escalator or moving walkway in case of a
suitable emergency.
9. Emergency lighting: Provided to ensure sufficient lighting during power failure

1. Maintain Social distancing inside Cabin
2. Always face towards the elevator doors
3. Use masks inside the lift
4. If the cabin is full, be patient and wait for the next ride.
5. Children must always be accompanied by an adult, and their hands should be held for the duration of
the ride.
6. Allow the persons inside the lift cabin to come out, before entering.
7. Pay attention to the floor indications and announcements wherever provided
8. In case of Power cuts, use the emergency buttons and request for help
9. If you notice something unusual about the elevator, please inform the facility management immediately
for help
10. If trapped in the elevator, press alarm button and wait for help. Do not attempt to get out on your own
11. Look emergency contact number inside the Elevator. It may help you in case any emergency
DON’Ts
1. Don’t use elevators in case of fire or other emergency like earthquake.
2. Don’t t panic in the case of a power failure
3. Don’t place your cargo near the door of the Elevator
4. Don’t try to board the lift in the moment of the door closing
5. Don’t use the passenger elevator when you are carrying heavy or large items. Look for a service or a
freight elevator or use the stairs instead
6. Avoid touching elevator button by bare hand.
7. Don’t attempt to keep doors open by placing objects or body parts in their way
8. Don’t overload and exceed elevator capacity.
9. Don’t attempt to keep the doors open or to get out without help if you trapped inside.
