The Cat Bulk Fuel Filtration system is intended for use in any application where users
store fuel for machines or engines. The filter/coalescer unit is placed in series between
the fuel pump on the fuel storage tank and the fuel station. The units may also be
installed so that fuel arriving on site can be filtered prior to filling the bulk fuel tank,
utilizing the fuel pump on the fuel delivery truck. Smaller units can be used for remote
day tank or fuel truck applications. The system does not require electrical power unless
a heating unit is needed in extremely cold climates. An optional electrical fuel heater is
available for cold climates where water removed from the fuel may freeze.
The Caterpillar Bulk Fuel Filtration systems will remove water and debris from the users
bulk fuel supply. Excessive amounts of dirt and/or water may be introduced into fuel
during the transportation or storage process, which can prematurely plug and reduce
fuel filter service intervals as well as accelerate fuel system component wear. In order
to maximize engine life, diesel fuel supplied to the fuel tank should have a maximum
particulate level of ISO 18/16/13 with a maximum water content level of 0.1% (1000
ppm). The Caterpillar Bulk Fuel Filtration system ensures that only clean, dry fuel
enters the fuel tank.
Features Benefits
Gate valve • Shuts off flow during service or removal of unit
4-micron particulate filter • Effectively traps and holds large volumes of particulate debris
• All sized systems utilize the same filter element
Coalescer unit • Strips water from fuel and automatically drains the water to an
external water storage vessel
• Capable of removing 1% water by volume to less than .05% at the
rated flow of the unit
• Float mechanism in the bottom of the unit controls the water level
Coalescer filter elements • Water removed by these elements falls to the bottom of the
coalescer unit
Separator cartridge • A fine mesh separator prevents tiny water droplets from escaping
Automatic water drain • When water level is at or below an acceptable level, the valve is
shut off
• When water level is above the acceptable level, the float will rise
and trigger a rotary valve on the pivot of the float arm to open the
automatic water drain valve
• If the water and float continue to rise above normal, the slug
control valve will completely shut off flow to prevent water from
passing downstream
• As the water level drops, the float drops, allowing the slug control
valve to open and outlet flow to resume
Flow meter • Installed on the automatic water drain valve and allows the total
amount of water removed to be monitored
Slug control valve • Used to temporarily reduce fuel flow to assure proper operation of
the coalescer and particulate filters
• Reduces flow as filter restriction increases
Basic Specifications
Proper maintenance practices and regular servicing will ensure the performance and life
of your bulk fuel filtration unit. The replacement filters and heater elements listed below
are direct replacements for the production elements used in the systems.
* Note: Coalescer Kits are multi-element kits that satisfy a complete change-out of
the particular fuel/water separator in use. The Pre-Filter kits also satisfy a complete change-out of the
particulate filters being replaced.
** Note: Separator Kits are (1) unit kits and need to be ordered according to how many separators are
damaged and need to be replaced.
*** Note: Only one heater element is required for all model sizes.
Replacement pre-filter elements will typically need to be replaced every 3-6 months, or
as needed. At a minimum, Caterpillar recommends the pre-filters be changed at least
one time per year. In areas with extremely dirty fuel conditions, the pre-filter should be
monitored regularly to ensure the filters do not clog, allowing contaminated fuel to enter
the system. Replacement coalescer elements should be changed as required, with a
minimum of one change per year being recommended. Each system is supplied with
differential pressure indicators, one for the pre-filter and one for the fuel/water
separator. Filter elements should be changed at, or a little before, they reach 20-psi
differential pressure. If the differential pressure across the elements reaches 25-psi, the
slug valve will automatically shut off flow forcing the maintenance of the system.
Heater elements are optional for customers who require them. Heater elements would
only need to be replaced as required.

Legacy Products
Caterpillar will continue to support the existing Bulk Fuel Filtration systems currently in
the field with replacement elements and service repair parts. The part numbers of the
legacy Bulk Fuel Filtration systems are:
284-0413… 50 GPM
284-0415… 100 GPM
284-0416… 200 GPM
295-0048… 300 GPM
The replacement filters and heater elements listed below are direct replacements for the
production elements used in the systems.
* Note: Coalescer Kits are multi-element kits that satisfy a complete change-out of
the particular fuel/water separator in use.
** Note: The Pre-Filter Kits and Separator Kits are (1) unit kits and need to be ordered according to
how many filter elements or separators need to be replaced.
*** Note: The 50, 100, and 200 GPM units only require one heater element, while
the 300 GPM unit requires two heater elements.
