Article 2 - Impact of social media on the academic performance of college students

in Kashmir by Ishfaq Ahmad Palla and Arslan Sheikh.

Social media has become a powerful tool to communicate and to establish contacts with
others. Social media provides multiple and the best ways to be in touch with people who
share common interests. The use of social media networks over the years have seen an
unprecedented increase among the young generation all over the globe.

Based on the article “Impact of social media on the academic performance of college
students in Kashmir” that have been conducted by Ishfaq Ahmad Palla and Arslan Sheikh,
the purpose of this study is to investigate how students are using social media sites in their
educational activities, to determine how undergraduate students in North Kashmir use social
media and to assess the impact of social media on undergraduate students' academic
activity. To collect data from undergraduate students at several government colleges in
Kashmir, a systematic questionnaire was created, and a survey was conducted. The surveys
were given out at random to male and female first, second-, and third-year undergraduate
students from various programmes. Closed ended and Likert scale items were included in
the survey.

Researchers have stated the results of their study according to the statistics, most students
use social media networking sites to meet their educational requirements. YouTube is the
most popular social media platform among college students. Most students believe that
social media networks are simple to use, and they have been using them for three years.
Students greatly benefit from the usage of social media since it allows them to share their
knowledge and information with others, enhance their academic grades, and improve their
reading and writing skills. Most students spend an hour or more on social media sites.
Students access social media websites via laptops, mobile phones, and personal PCs.

This research has significant implications for educational stakeholders and society at large.
First, it aids in highlighting the critical function of social media networks in student
pedagogical activities. Teachers are also encouraged to employ social media platforms in
their instructional initiatives because of the study. This research has several limitations and
restrictions such as the study only looks at undergraduate students at three colleges in
Northern Kashmir's three districts. Second, in this study, the researchers did not consider
the responses of instructors and college administrators.

As conclusion, social media websites help individuals to share and grasp information in a
very short span of time. Students from all localities and educational levels need to make the
best use of these networks for recreational, as well as educational purposes. The study
concludes that social media sites work as a useful platform for the undergraduate students.
